The Halloween 2024 Official Contest Support Thread!

I just submitted my first contest entry "Halloween Party in Pandemonium".
Humor & Satire seems to be an unpopular category.

:) I'm sorry that I did Wales dirty in my books.
Humor is tough here. Some readers seem to want no sex in their humor, others are upset if they aren’t aroused as much as they are amused.

Out of morbid (appropriate!) curiosity, how well do you guys think a dark and bleak and disturbing story would do? I mean, it's bleak. I'm guessing pretty poorly. There's some erotic content and descriptions, but lots of regret, a handful of suicides, a couple of other deaths, a woman self-mutilates... I've checked with a couple of other authors/beta readers to see if it's too much, but I've been urged to continue and maybe even dig deeper. I'm actually expecting some people to click out of the story -- or maybe just go right to the bottom of the last page to express their displeasure, but I'm about 90% sure that I'm still going to publish it. I may be surprised. So, traditionally, how do scary stories fare in this contest? Or should I just write a sex romp/wacky mix-up at a costume party and actually try to get a decent rating?
I read that one and found it to be empathic to what many would consider a predator.
The duality of her emotions created and maintained great tension.
I quite liked it.

Good day everyone! I am excited to share I have just submitted my story, The Patient on Windhaven Lane.

I truly hope when it is posted you enjoy. Thank you for allowing this old woman to express herself and for you all to give me a bit on confidence.
I liked how the plot elements were interwoven and reached critical mass at the close.
The choice of an EMT as protagonist kept dramatic tension between boinks.
I thought it well-crafted and rated it accordingly.

I wrote a contribution to the Halloween spirit without realizing it was a competition.
My only disappointment is that there is a dearth of comments, which I rely on to improve.
There are 2. One is from me.
The other is from Freya.

Thank you. I usually don't worry about what I'm writing -- I just write -- but every now and then the evil debate between "I'm an Artist" and "Give the People what they Want" pops into my head. This story caused quite a battle up in my old melon. But I'm glad that you liked it.

Come on, folks! @DukeofPaducah is asking for comments to help improve their writing. If you don't feel comfortable commenting publicly, I'm sure a private comment would also be welcome. Help a fellow author out. Here's the story: The Skinwalker

Humour is also very subjective. There's (in general) a large difference between what the British based world thinks is funny vs the Yanks...
That's what exactly I wanted to say to @AlexFourways . :)

My story is online now, and most of the references in it were British. "Halloween Party in Pandemonium"

Sorry @StillStunned , I missed the Pandemonium challenge. The horns on the politician's head turned out to be plastic now.

Freya👩🏻‍🦰 is a gem 💎like that.
I suffer from the same lack of comments, (My LW is doing better at 7) but maybe that means you and I are neither stella or beneath contempt?! One of my biggest number of comments were about the nature of 'small computer companies' and mistaking the Royal Navy as being an American institution! I Step off the Train
I'll have too look you up!
