Twilight hate, this interests and annoys me. I haven't read the series and don't intend to (not my kind of story), and I understand the vitriol I see splashed across the internet is just your usual knee-jerk reaction to anything that becomes ridiculously popular, BUT...

It's really, really, really, really hard to

a) Write a book
b) Get an agent
c) Get an editor/publisher
d) Actually get people to read the book

So when I read all the sparkly vampire jokes and such, I think, 'Fine, now you go write something better and get it published, asshole."

Yeah, pretty much my feeling on the issue. I have read the books, cause my daughter is a huge fan and I usually read what she really enjoys so (a) I'll know what's going on in her life and (b) we'll have something to talk about and (c) so she knows that I'm interested in her. Either way, no they're not going to be the next great American novel, but as teen novels go it's not bad.

However, I've noticed this often with someone who gets successful out of the blue. Like Justin Bieber. I don't like his music and neither does my kids, but the number of people who profess to literally hate him, not his music, is assinine. He's a 17 year old boy, grow up. I think it's jealousy that he made it big, just like I think it's jealousy that Stephanie Meyer made it big off of what started as a dream (literally, she had a dream about sparkly people and wrote a book about it). It's not like any of these people are being forced to read the books or watch the movies.

Agreed. Human nature baffles me at times. I'm glad your kids have you for a role model, Gracie.

There are a couple women at work who are *obsessed* with pop culture. Every so often they'll go off on how much they despise XYZ person, and I'll say "huh?!?!"

You don't know that person. You've never talked to them, shared a meal, met their kids... How the hell can you have so much vitriol for someone you don't even know?

The insurance companies have me so mad and so frustrated that I'm almost, almost, ready to believe we would have been better off to have had the baby, and hospital bill, and surgery bill, and ambulance bill, and NICU bill, and pediatrician bills

With no farking insurance at all!

At least then we would know, to the penny, just how bad of shape we were in.

None of this squabbling over who's primary and who's secondary.
No monkeying around with payments and refunds and now a year and a half later still being unable to find out exactly how much we owe some of these providers.

We paid them premiums, now they need to pull up their big kid pants and do what we paid them for.

So let me get this straight.

Last spring I took BA 105.
This fall I want to take BA 104.

This spring you instituted a prereq for BA104.

And BA 105 doesn't meet the prereq.

So now I have to take a placement exam (same one I took almost 15 years ago, but my scores are too old now) or take MTH25 to get into BA 104 even though I've already taken BA 105.

And all of this so I can take the class for "personal enrichment".

I know. I know lots of people like that, and I've found them to usually be either teenagers or really immature adults. Its like their concept of reality is skewed and they think they actually know a person cause they've seen them on TV. That, and the whole jealousy thing.

While I can see your point, there definitely are exceptions to this rule that should never have been made. The Eragon books by Paolini are my most notable exception. He:

a) wrote a book...that is essentially a shameless amaglamation/fan fiction of multiple other authors, often veering dangerously near the point of actual plagiarism. the hard part about "writing a book" is not writing out a story. It's making it an original creation that's not the vomit of a dinner of many other authors. It is notable that his second book is an improvement on the first and I've heard the last two were a larger improvement. I couldn't force myself to suffer through them and felt NO desire to see the story through to the end....which should say enough. I finished The Sword of Truth series and will finish Wheel of Time for god's sake...I can stick with a good story.

b/c) His book was published, originally, by a small publishing company that was owned by his Aunt. While the fact his book later was picked up by a larger company does speak for him, the simple fact is that he probably would not have been published (or at least, the book that was published wouldn't have been) had he not had a family member in the industry.

d) While I do acknowledge that popular things don't become popular for no reason, he (like Justin Bieber) rose on more than mere "skill/talent". By being "that super young author! He wrote that book when he was only 15, and now he's only 19!!" there was a huge marketing tagline. This also made him more appealing to kids. Combine that with a very simplistic story line, dragons, and a main character who is in the situation very nerdy child wishes it could be in (find dragon egg, become super awesome practically overnight), and of course it did well...in the same way that high fructose corn syrup sells well!!

You can tell he wrote it at 15. Because 15 year old kids also write fan fiction. It's an excellent step towards quality writing, but just a step.

Again, I can understand why people like it and I see the point you're making...but just because something is popular doesn't mean it's not right to criticize it. Hate on it mindlessly like you mention...sure...

But the simple fact of the matter is, Twilight is a best-selling teenager's romance novel. It's very little else. Nora Robert's Lite, Rated PG-13!! I actually have no idea if it's anything like Nora Roberts, btw. She's just the only romance author name I know. I think one of the reasons that people get so fired up over Twilight is because people begin to set THAT as the standard. It starts to become that "Eragon" is what the new generation thinks of as quality sci-fi/fantasy genre. It's just....offensive to people who enjoy higher quality writing to hear Tolkien (as an example) referred to lesser than Twilight because it's too hard, or too slow, or any other sort of vapid complaint. It'd be like lauding the tracking accomplishments of a Yorkie that found a dead toad over the accomplishments of a champion bloodhound that rescued a lost hiker. Sure...good for the Yorkie...but come on.

some people certainly dislike her for the reasons y'all have mentioned...but those are far from the only reasons!!

I do not hate the writer of Eragon or the book, but I didn't like it. I felt like I was watching a watered down version of Lord of the Rings mixed with a few other books.

Criticism is a normal part of writing, acting, or singing. I don't like a lot of books and I won't watch a lot of people 'act', but I don't hate them. Why? Because no matter how much I read about them, I don't really know them.

Eh. Not so much. More like a pg13 version of Christine Feehan. I don't recall if Nora Robert has ever written vampire fiction. Plus, Nora Robert is a much better writer.

Yah, that's fair enough. I dislike Stephanie Meyers, personally, for her idiocy outside her writing :p It is pretty...ridiculous to hate someone personally for something they wrote that was published. It makes MUCH more sense to hate on their publishers ;)

Lol, Fair enough. Like I said, I didn't know any other names off the top of my head...

There are heaps of crap books out there. Some do well, some don't, some (against all odds) become bestellers. There are heaps of great books that never get published. It is what it is - sadly.

But there is a vast chasm between critique and hate. All authors expect and accept the former. It is the latter that annoys me. There are plenty of books I don't like or feel are low quality, but I would never join in the "hate mobs" just because of that.

The Paolini's of this world will always exist side by side with the R.R. Martins. It is as fair as the rest of life.

A friend of a friend of a friend just moved in here and doesn't know anybody. A prospective social contact for me, yay. We're meeting later today, double-yay.

I'm currently writing a book. It's called Fifty Shades of Shut The Fuck Up, You Stupid Bitch.

Did that sound bitter?

Yes, this. I don't mind a book, movie, or CD critique and am, in fact, an active encourager of the BDSM book club thread where we critique BDSM books - not their authors. There are quite a few very popular authors I don't like. And there are quite a few popular authors I like, and others (like FurryFury) don't like. I'm not going to waste my time and energy actively hating someone I have never met.

I'll read it! LOL

Ouch! I was just expressing an opinion.

Yep. And I'm not suggesting there are books that didn't deserve to be published. What I'm referring to is that "mob mentality" bullshit that lacks any real thought or effort.

My mom wants me to send her the Fifty Shades of Gray ebook trilogy I got from a friend.

When I was a teenager, I found a copy of Bound Bimbos in her and my dad's "special" cabinet.

I don't like where this is going.

I like it a lot. ;)

The Jubilee concert was crap apart from Tom Jones's "Delilah" and Robbie Williams's "Mack the Knife". The fireworks were brilliant though.

Goddamn right I watched the fucking TAYLOR SWIFT documentary, asshole. And I fucking enjoyed it. A LOT!

And no, it's not irony, so shut the fuck UP!

I have the "Tom Jones Reloaded" disc and I love it.
I also have a digital copy of "you can leave your hat on".

Does that make me weird? Maybe.
Do I care? Not really.

NO problemo. I loved the Shins from the first time I heard them. My younger friends get embarrassed for me because of some movie that they were mentioned in. But I don't watch many movies.

I ask them if they've actually listened to the Shins? No? Here, have one song.

And they have to admit it's hella musicianship.

Anyway, "Leave Your Hat on" is one of the alltime great love songs of alltime.

I'm feeling rather snarky today. It might be a good idea for me to avoid Lit for at least a few hours, lest I insult people I don't want to hurt.
