The Other Thanksgiving

Surströmming: fermented herring. Delicacy from the north of Sweden.

Sounds interesting! Now, I've eaten pickled herring, and pickled herring in sour cream and onion, but not fermented, at least I don't think.

If I ever find myself in an IKEA again I'll have to see if they've got it in the Swedish market--usually all I ever get there is cloudberries and lingonberries (which my sister, for years, called "Lincoln" berries because it used to be the only place my folks knew to get them was this place in Lincoln, Nebraska which was heavily settled by Scandinavians).
 
Fermented herring. Rotten fish. It smells. And it sure doesn't taste good!:eek:

It's pretty good thing, though. In my last apartment, there was something wrong with the ventilation system, so when my neighbors smoked, I could feel the smell creeping into my bathroom.
I revenged by holding an open can of surströmming under the vent!

Fight evil with evil...
 
And just think, it's more aesthetically appealing than injecting Crisco into your veins.
