Age certainly CAN be irrelevant, but it can also be correctly reflected in stereotypes. Stereotypes for males my age are typically reasonably accurate. But there's stereotypes for a reason, and not everyone gets pidgeon-holed into that stereotype.
One of my writing professors summed it up quite well, "To say that drivers in Lake Charles (the town I lived in at the time) are bad is a true statement, but to say that a person from Lake Charles is a bad driver because he is from there is a stereotype that is not necessarily true. You can make broad statements, but you must always allow for an individual to break the mold." He was a very wise man.
