well natural languages is what fascinates me... machine languages are interesting too, but i don't think i would be that good with them... but anyway, i wouldn't really refer to them as languages - i know they are called that, but they function quite different to natural languages...

well as for confusing them - you do and you don't. i have problems switching from one foreign language to the other, usually need a few minutes for that - so translating from one foreign language to the other is difficult at times - when i tried to translate from romanian to spanish it was almost impossible, and when i tried to translate from spanish to english i suddenly spoke german without realizing it...

i do sometimes mix in words - but that's usually languages i am not that secure with, so rarely happens with english, for example... i throw the odd romanian word into spanish and vice versa... but what is more common is that i keep saying swedish words when i speak czech, or similar things, as it is anyway more effort still to speak those...
how are machine languages not languages?
they're communicating instructions to do tasks

well i suppose they are languages in that they are a system of symbols. but then, languages in the sense of natural languages are not really set systems, they are open to constant change, they work with metaphors, polysemy, various connotations, tones, etc. - they are like several systems at once, also, as we constantly switch between codes (like, educated language, slang, etc. etc.) also, afaik one of the main functions of language is actually social... like, bonding with people, showing emotions, stuff like that...

natural languages and machine languages function very differently, and are very different things to learn, i think...

true

but machine languages can be used to make other machines communicate as well, they use a system of codes and symbols that are only used so that we can understand them, and can speak serveral at a time

but yeah, they dont keep up with natural languages yet in the changes and tonality and such

well i don't know enough about machine languages to really say much about this, but i'd still think the purpose and function is different... but then, i am only guessing...

well we're using machine languages right now, atleast 6 of them to post back and forth

but anyways

When you say "machine languages" are you talking stuff like HTML, XHTML, C++, C#, Java, etc.??

I'm talking about C, ASM, bytecode....

HTML and Co are markup, and not languages

okay, according to the dictionary of linguistics, by hadumod bußmann (and in a very rough translation by me, sorry for all the mistakes) :

"Language - a means of expression or the exchange of thoughts, ideas, realizations or informations based on cognitive processes, conditioned by society, subject to historical development; also the fixation and tradition of passing on knowledge. In this sense, language describes an form of expression specific to humans, which differs from all other possible languages, as animal languages, artificial languages and others through creativity, the ability for conceptual abstraction and the possibility for metalinguistic reflection."

So, in this sense they aren't languages... In a wider sense, I suppose, they are. Also from the dictionary:

"(4) Language in the sense of Semiotik and information theory: Every system of symbols used for the purpose of communication."

So in this sense, they are.

meh, differant dictionaries will tell you diffreant things anyways

pretty good translation though

yes true, and just because something is written in a dictionary it is not necessarily true... but in this case i pretty much agree with what she says...

Okay, change of subject. Perhaps y'all can be of assistance for me.

There's this girl whom I've know for a very long time. I've had feelings for her on and off. We used to talk a lot, but now it depends on whether I'm busy or she's busy.

I feel like we've gotten close, but the problem is, she's like totally in love with this guy who doesn't want to be in love with her because he got out of a 6 year relationship. The only thing coming from this whole "relationship" is that they're both "fuck buddies". It kind of really hurt me when she told me about this and I wasn't sure what to say to her.

So my question is, in your experience, if the whole relationship has started out as a "fucking relationship" and he doesn't want to be her boyfriend or be in love with her, does this mean that the relationship will forevermore be what it started as?

Don't get me wrong, I know that in this day and age, sex happens to be how it is. Whether it is making love or fucking or whatever, people are going to end up having sex no matter what. I want to have a relationship with her, but I don't want to wait around long enough for her to get it through her head he's just for the sex, as it seems to indicate based on what she told me, and also, I don't know if I could be mentally and emotionally available to have sex with her perhaps in the future of our "potential relationship".

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

cow might be - but thats besides the point

When I said that stuff about not having sex with her, I didn't mean it as in I couldn't have sex with her because she is a female. I meant it as in that she's in a "fucking relationship" with this guy and that if she were to stop seeing him and committed to a full relationship with me, it would just take me awhile to want to have sex with her. I don't know I could explain it easier to understand, but I'm hoping something of understanding will come through your mind about what I'm saying.

Oh and you didn't really answer the question I was asking. If you're still ticked about my mistaking you for a female, I apologize. I had no intention of offending you.

I didn't realize it was my turn to post anything. So what's all been going on peoples? We just had a snowstorm and an ice storm these past few weeks, but now it looks like it's going to be warming up soon.

Meanwhile, I been trying to get back into college, but hopefully they'll reinstate my financial aid eligibility. When I dropped out of those classes and failed one of them back when I worked 2 jobs caused me to not get financial aid anymore.

Starting looking for writing jobs with the local paper the last few days, so hopefully that will help me get started writing career-wise.

I know all about failing classes. Now, if I get a 'D' or below, I have to pay for the class. Which isn't fun. This quarter at school is so much fun.
