U.S. politics isolation tank

Fascinating: http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2011/08/15/bachmann_submission/index.html

Maybe submissives of any stripe shouldn't be president.

This is kind of blowing my mind.

Or I'm just seriously sleep deprived.

I'll report back soon on this.

Just when I think American politics can't get wackier. With that, she states that her husband will have veto power over the Commander in Chief.

Call me old fashioned, but if a vaguely anonymous, possibly sinister douchebag is going to own the President, then it should be one of the Koch brothers.

The Koch brothers! Ha. Do you know how tough it is to boycott Georgia-Pacific paper products? Christ.

And yes, seriously, everyone should be boycotting Georgia-Pacific products.

Btw, and again in all seriousness, this is the scariest shit I've seen in a long, long time....

Yeah they make Quilted Northern and Soft N Gentle if that means anything.

Yup. And Angel Soft.

And Brawny, Sparkle, Mardi Gras, Vanity Fair paper towels and napkins.

And Dixie cups, plates, etc.

Also, Enslave-the-Masses™ toilet paper, and Huzzah! Guilded Age™ brand wipes, which I use to polish the gold loving cups where I keep my collection of orphan heads.

Dear members of the Key Party*,
Can any of you explain, or provide links to anyone else's explanations (show your work!) regarding why the Republican party has so thoroughly ruled public discourse by creating the terms that are used (Death Tax, Entitlements, etc.)?

Thanks,
A perplexed tek

*Since you're all literotica purvs, I can only surmise you're all founding members of the Key Party :D

Dear tek,

These are merely terms created by Republican players designed to instill strong emotions in party line voters, with hopes these terms will also instill strong emotions in the moderate or undecided voters.

I got that. What I'm asking is: why haven't the Democrats (or the Libertarians, or the Silver Foxes) create equally powerful terms?
Or has the liberal media biased me?

First off, if you truly think there's an overall liberal bias in the media, you too have been subjugated by Republican talking points and phraseology.

Since about the time of Ronald Reagan, the right-wing movement has become very skilled at creating terms such as "death tax" to help sway public opinion. I think one reason why they do such a good job at this is that for these 30 years the conservative movement has been a unified one. The politicians and commentators all like to show how loyal they are to the movement, and using the agreed-upon code words and phrases is a part of that. It's like their own little dialect that they use to signal membership, and since the special terms in this dialect are all carefully constructed to trigger anger and resentment, each use in public tends to add a bit of fire to the engine of the movement.

You might find the wiki on Frank Luntz to be informative.

So..., the politicians are following the will of the people('s focus groups). It's nice to know that politics aren't so unilateral (with politicians influencing the brain washed masses), but, wow. That's scary. I'm gonna show my bias here and say that those focus groups are not random samples (even chosen from the Republican audience)... Actually, if those were random samples from the populace at large, that*'s even scarier.

Bump!

Anyone been a part of the Occupy protests? I feel like JM and Roscoe definitely made their respective ways to NYC.

As for me, I would but it interferes with naptime.

We had an occupy Nelson. For reals. Though, it was a Canuck magazine that sparked this whole "occupy" movement, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised?

I'm curious to see if there's anyone left there when I get home...it is snowing now. :D

Heh, I was talking to my dad about various occupy movements and I did giggle at some of the locations. Like, how hard is it to occupy Berkeley, CA? They've freaking voted to secede from the U.S. before!

I was there for the first month, not camping but down there all day since I was out of work. It was pretty cool.

I knew it! Is there a lot of organizing and large scale discussion going on? Or is it mostly hanging around?

It's a mad hive of totally chaotic activity, much done by various cells or "working groups" who are only nominally in contact with one another. I was involved with the labor outreach group.

The atmosphere at the beginning was amazing and electrical. I've never talked to so many strangers in my life.

Lately though the vibe has gotten kind of dark. A lot of crust punks and winos started moving in, sleeping all day and taking advantage of all the free stuff. The western half of the park was basically abandoned to them and it looks like a post apocalyptic encampment.

Yeah I heard something about having to make certain areas safe spaces for women.

It will suck if this can't move into something that can be sustainable. I think it has raised awareness of income inequality, among other things. But damn, does the freeform nature of this thing preclude any focused message??

I am leaving to go vote for Soil Commissioner.

I'm embarrassed to say no, I haven't been there yet. There were key issues on various ballots this fall, and I've been spending time on the ground in other places. Mostly Ohio.

Focus this month should be on repealing the Bush tax cuts.

Tangible, specific, rather obvious to all except the Republican Powers That Be.

Not that I had the stomach to watch in real time, but did anyone see Rick Perry's campaign explode in a hail of pitifulness last night?

Against all preconceived notions, I actually like the guy. He comes off as amiable, not obnoxious. Hail fellow well met. Not a dick. And a happy drunk, no less!

Wouldn't mind having a beer with the guy; he reminds me of Huckabee '08. So I'll pass on the Perry bashing.

Perry is probably in precisely the right kind of political position: he has plenty of title but not a lot of power or responsibility as governor in Texas. Trying to go above that is, as they say, reaching for too high a pay grade.

As political theater, perhaps of the tragi-comic genre, his fizzle last night was memorable.
