Valentines Day Contest Support Thread 2025

I may manage a quick token story. Can someone tell me an industrialised country where they don't do V-day, and don't have a competing festival at the time (Brazil has Carneval). I'm thinking China, say Shanghai?

It’s not on the level of “don’t do at all,” but you could pick an arbitrary country in Eastern Europe, because in many (most?) of them people think VD is largely just Western bullshit invented to sell overpriced chocolates while that’s trying to replace their native traditions.

And while Carnival is technically a thing, it’s more like “go to one house party” and not “a month of street parades”. The temperatures are not very conducive to the latter.

There are various articles about this, but it probably depends on what flavour you want in the story. Iran or Saudi Arabia would be 'interesting'. Malaysia perhaps?

Nope, sorry. Like Japan, Valentine's day is a two day affair in China
On both days, romantic partners like to express their love, give flowers or gifts, or go out to dinner or to the cinema. It is the woman who gives their intended chocolate. It's also a tradition for lovers to locate the stars Vega and Altair which symbolize Cowherd and Weaver Girl. One Qixi tradition is to eat 巧果 (qiǎoguǒ), a type of sweet pastry.
a month later comes "White Valentines Day"

March 14th – White Valentine’s Day (白色情人节 – báisè qíngrén jié). This day was invented in Japan in 1978 as a counterpart to the February 14th holiday. In Japan and other Asian countries, women traditionally give gifts to men on February 14th. White Valentine’s Day exactly one month later is the day when men return the favor to their partners. White chocolate is a favorite gift, hence the name.

Australia doesn't exactly ignore Valentine's Day, but it's a lot more low-key than in America. Since February is the middle of summer here, a lot of towns have mid-summer festivals around that time.

The country is irrelevant to the story - I just need it to have a sizeable city with a university, and citizens who wouldn't have considered the date as an issue when inviting a Brit for the 13-15th (or a week around then). Ideally a long way from Britain, so Our Protagonist can be on a plane for many hours and write a love letter (which is essentially the story).

According to that Wiki article you quote, 'Chinese Valentine's Day', Qixi, is the 7th day of month 7, aka August. All I can find is about what people do then.

Japan, yes, they have the obligatory chocolate and all on Feb 14th, and the White Day a month later.

Malaysia is one I do know - in KL and the western states, young adults get quite soppy over V-day. It's only the states with few non-Muslims who are against it. It's underground but surprisingly popular in the Middle East (any opportunity for consumerism?)

Celebrating in one of those countries where it's illegal would be an interesting story, but not one I have time to write this year! Anyone who does take that on, please link me the story when it's done.

Man, I don't know where my story came from but I'm actually on the verge of tears having finished the draft. It's either poetic or sappy, trite crap. I guess we will let the reader decide.

I did find a way to get a quick facial and some threesomes in though so all is not lost with me

Now to edit. It's short so it wont be a huge slog.

Mt first entry into Mature
Good luck, it sounds promising! I have a theory that if something you write brings you to tears, it'll do the same for at least one reader. I have no proof that is actually true however.

One of my recent chapters actually brought me to tears as I wrote it but I don't know if anyone who read it felt the same way. In my case, it was a character's death. The way I wrote their final moments brought on some unexpected waterworks.

Similar here. We will see, I guess. And thanks! Editing right now

Just submitted my Romance entry! 12.6k words. Now to see if I can salvage the Mature entry I had been working on. Might just save it for a rainy day and focus on another installment of my budding lesbian housewife series.

Yeah, killing off a character can be tough. I experienced the same thing when I was finishing up "Growth Spurt". The thing is, I had no intention of the character dying until I hit a certain spot and then it made sense. Probably one of the most difficult scenes I've written. Our characters really become our family in so many ways.

An expression of love in Saudi Arabia? What would he use, a billy club or with a closed fist?
I'm recently back from a brief trip to Saudi Arabia and had some fun setting a story at the hotel I was staying at. It took a slight beating (with billy clubs) in LW because of a cuckold component in the first installment, but I think it will hold up okay in the end. What really struck me was the contrast between the many intelligent and educated (and yes, attractive) young women at my conference and the power structures that they were navigating through even during a process of opening up as they work towards their 2030 Vision. Yes, men and women were freely talking to each other, and half the women weren't wearing a veil. They can now drive as well. But none of the women were in positions of power and the laws and customs that they are working with are archaic, including stoning for adultery etc. It will be an interesting country to watch over the next decade. I'd love to read some stories written by some real Saudi experts that unpack the dynamics that are at play away from the luxury hotels. They might need to use a VPN to submit the story though....

They do! I love all of them, even the one responsible for that character's death.

It wasn't just the death that got me emotional. Another character sang a hymn to her in her final moments, writing the hymn had me in tears more than once. Thinking about the lyrics and the character singing that to her as she passed, I felt it.

For example the local Pumpkin Festival.

Last day of writing, Editing will be done tomorrow (I tend to edit as I write) All I have to do really is decide on a name - Alberta Clipper or The One That Got Away should be ready to submit this weekend.

Do they have pumpkin chunkin' down in Oz? Some how I can picture Long Guns and Catapults being big in Oz, with the addition of goal tenders to liven up the game.
They have a pumpkin rolling event. They start at the top of Policeman's hill which is a pretty steep hill and see who can roll their pumpkin the furthest. There are other competitions and judging but that's the kicker.

Without digging onto the whole 'does China celebrate Valentine's Day issue' (kinda but it absolutely wouldn't stop work travel) note that Spring Festival takes up a moving two weeks in January or February with universities closed for a month or more around it. This year it's early and you could just about get away saying he's visiting in 0th week, but other years its been slap bang in the middle of the festival.
