If you’re ever despairing about the state of the world, you can — at least, according to some scholars — be thankful it’s not the year 536 CE. Sherman had purpose. His March to the Sea and his northward turn to hook up with Grant was done masterfully. Well fewer than 2% casualties, little need for supplies as they foraged/pillaged their way, and they rolled over what opposition they encountered. He made it happen.


He was also a masterful horseman. With the long exposure times, horse ears are frequently blurry. Good horsemen (and women) could convince their mounts to hold still and not have blurry ears. I have one of my great great grandfather from this era. The horse's ears are down, expressing displeasure, but s/he held still. Pinkerton was also good.
