Blushing Bottom said:We, if right handed, as most of us are tend to carry objects we value in the left hand so that it can be protected with the right and not be in the way if sword play is needed. It stands to reason when one considers this that a submissive often the most treasured posession of a Dominant would be on the left side and more easily protected if needed. Especially if some silver tongued devil comes along and trys to run off with such a prize. This is it IMHO
Indeed...Gorean smorean...It's a couple more leftovers..
(keep in mind that John Norman borrowed heavily... From everywhere).
The right side remains clear of obstructions to allow free use of the sword... *shrug* The predominance of right handedness again..
When the public carrying of swords fell out of fashion... Men of means (and others) still habitually carried a walking stick.
In America the same thing lapsed over into the carrying of the pistol... (Though, like most things of that type..Still more a romantic notion than a reality.)
Remember though, the idea that you should depend on someone else to come and rescue you from muggers, bandits, brigands, etc etc etc... Is still a fairly recent (and somewhat intellectually bankrupt) notion...
The step behind is a functional leftover of relative social position...
I will leave it to KC to post the lyrics of "Froggy Went A 'Courtin" ...Personally, I'm going back to watching Benny Hill.
