What Made You Smile/Laugh Today?

With my pregnancies nothing made my kids stop moving like their daddy putting his hand on my tummy to feel. However, late in the pregnancy of my oldest she was moving where you could actually SEE her, and i managed to sneak him in (they'd stop moving if they heard him, too), and he watched her roll over, through my stomach. He got the WEIRDEST look on his face. It took me a couple of minutes to get him to tell me why, and he said "it looks like something from aliens". I literally laughed out loud, because he's right - it does.

Y'all are SO good for repressing my ovary's yelling at me to reproduce. *shudder* so creepy.

Here's a mental image that'll keep you from reproducing.

When my cousin got engaged, my mom asked her if she was planning on having children. She said "I don't know. I just can't imagine having something inside me, living off me like a parasite."

Mom laughed and laughed. And my cousin never did have children. She won't - that's the cousin who drowned last year.

You do realize that if you mean that literally, and you'll be anywhere near Dallas (yes, it's a big state; yes we define "near" somewhat differently than most), we will have to do dinner... Right?

Well, I will be in Odessa. How "near" is that to Dallas? Because dinner with the Mouse sounds fabulous!

(BTW, you do realize your state fits inside my province...with room left over for Florida and Rhode Island? :D)

Ah... Yeah... That's like a 6-8 hour drive. Which is not "near". ("Near" is like Fort Worth -1 hour, or maybe Austin -3-ish. lol)

Did you know that if you fold a map on El Paso, there are sections if northeast Texas (Dallas & eastward) that will be playing in the Pacific Ocean? :)

My few visits to the northeast have been crazy. My hosts will be all "Hey! We could bounce over to Connecticut to see the leaves change!" and I'm going "WTH? That's like a totally different state! (me used to driving 3-10 hours to leave my state) I'm only here for 3 days!" lol

Ah, too bad. Yes, that is a bit of a haul for a meal, eventhough the company would be worth it. (I am in town for only 3 days).

I have driven through part of Texas once before. It was large. And...corn, corn, corn, oil pumper, corn, corn, oil pumper, corn and...Dairy Queen! Corn, corn, corn, oil pumper, etc, etc, etc. ;)

Do you in Texas also express distance in driving time, like we Canucks do? Eg. "How far is it from Vancouver to Nelson?" "Oh, about 7hours."

A chuckle last night when it happened, and a smile this morning transferring the pic...

A 26-pound Corgi trying to nap in a bed designed for an 8-10 pound cat:

http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x95/Sir_Winston54/MoziCatbed.jpg

She generally doesn't crawl in there, but one of the cats used it for a nap earlier yesterday, and she apparently wanted to reclaim it (even though it was never "hers") and get the cat smell out of it. Of course, they repay the favor by sleeping on "her" cushion, though for some reason, they don't much mess with the nylon-and-net kennel she sleeps in. The youngest, once in a while, will wander in and back out of it, but won't stay.

Sorry for the pic quality. I used my phone instead of a "real" camera.

Geeky comparisons of BC and TX:

BC area (square miles): 364,800
BC population: 4.42 million

TX area (square miles): 261,797
TX population: 24.78 million

BC :: TX area = 1.39
TX :: BC pop = 5.61

BC pop density = 12.12 persons per square mile
TX pop density = 94.65 persons per square mile

No wonder you love it up there. Well, discounting the whole Canadian winter thing. (And yeah, I'm not really dissing it *that* much, since South Dakota's winters are likely worse than BC's because BC has the Pacific to mitigate the weather a bit.)

Yeah, I lived in TX a few years. There are long, loooooooong stretches where *nothing* would be an improvement over what one sees as one drives across the state...

Yeah, we BCers always kind of quietly (and politely) snicker when we see stuff in the popular media about how BIG Texas is. And yes, we have lots and lots and lots of elbow room. Want to spend a day at a lake with no one else around? No problem.

(Just bring bear spray).

Other fun facts? Well, the population of Canada is currently hovering around 34.6 million. That's less than the state of California. And Tokyo, a single city, has a population of about 32 million.

Thank Cod for our cold climate!

You forgot the cattle lots.

Lots and lots and lots of cattle lots.

And yes we think it terms of hours. A friend in Boston was amazed that I'd only seen the Texas coastline once (as a child)... I pointed out that while he might get to see the ocean with a 15-30 minute drive, I wouldn't see ocean for roughly 7-9 hours. Not counting traffic. LOL

A weird Dallas thing though, is that there are "boundaries" people just don't think to cross. People in the norther 'burbs think it's "too far" to drive "all the way into Dallas", so they'll avoid it like the plague (on a good day it takes 15 minutes; on a bad day it takes an hour-ish). People from Ft. Worth (45 minutes to an hour away) rarely drive into Dallas; people from Dallas rarely drive into Ft. Worth. It's just "too far"... and very very very different worlds. Dallas is an oil and technology city; Ft. Worth has a heavy history in the ranch/cattle industry. They just don't mix.

The boyfriend's support and encouragement for me going into my third meeting with a potential new employer. After more than a decade of living with a lack of support from a partner, it's so very refreshing that a guy, only four and a half months into the relationship, would be this supportive and caring, taking the time to remind me of my strong characteristics and talk through my areas of concern.

Ooops....I had vowed never to do schmoopy "what made you smile" posts again...but I couldn't resist. :D

I love my guy.

Thinking of distance in terms of travel time is also a metropolitan thing. I don't have a clue how many miles it is from my house to, say, the center of downtown Chicago or to a suburb along the lake shore north of Chicago, but I can tell you the travel time to the nearest 5 minutes depending on time of day and day of the week. For the curious: travel times to downtown Chicago can range from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours from my house. At the right time of day, it can take me less than 15 minutes to get to O'Hare Airport, but most of the time it's closer to a half-hour or more. For the record, Mapquest says that it's about 26 miles to the center of downtown. It's about 150 miles from here to the Mississippi River at the west edge of the state and at most times I can get there more quickly than I can get to downtown Chicago at the worst traffic times. Around here, the number of miles to a destination is meaningless.

ETA: I will never forget the time that I asked a salesperson if he could travel from one city in Texas to another to do something for our company. He, accurately, pointed out that I in Chicago was almost as close as he was to that other Texas city.

LOL, I thought everybody measured distance in the time it takes to get there. I know it's common in the middle of nowhere--where I'm from--because, really, how else are you going to measure it? THERE'S NOTHING THERE! ;)

This made me smile today.

I'm glad my joy helped.

I think I'll take your advice and keep the schmoopy up, 'cause this time around this guy is actually schmoopy-worthy.

P.S. I GOT THE JOB!!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I'm just a little bit overjoyed, relieved, happy, crying (happy tears), glad I can move away from fear, ecstatic, and did I mention overjoyed about it all. I get to transition out of a profession that was so-so for me, into something else where my education can still be used. And I think I'll even have fun doing it all! I can't wait for my first day! Is it next Monday yet?

Of course you did. You're schmoopy, or... whatever. Congrats.

Congratulations :rose:
What made me smile today? Our kitten's playful antics.

Thanks:kiss:

I have three cats and I was not happy with their antics today...they were tormenting a poor chipmunk that I was trying to save without getting bit...my house is a torture chamber for the woodland animals in our neighborhood.:(
