Unexpectedly brilliant day with the boyf (I hate shopping):

  • successful and fun sofa-shopping (now only have to wait 12 to 20 weeks for delivery )
  • stopping for a hill-walk with the doggy on the way home and finding fabulous views and a really dinky little Bronze Age stone circle
  • dropping into a country pub after the walk and finding it was not only wonderfully cosy and romantic, and not only totally dog-friendly, but had recently been taken over by one the the top chefs in this half of England.... best 3-course Sunday roast EVAH.

Getting to drink 3/4 of a pot of coffee without interuption. Oh yeah and I balanced my checkbook within $.20 on the first try. A major accomplishment!:)

My whole band playing 'This is Halloween' for my little sister, who'd just been introduced to the Nightmare Before Christmas, and freaking loved it. Heartwarming, that :)

My doctor........ 'do you spend a lot of time on your knees?'

:eek::cool::cattail:

Hahaha i love that one. I remember asking my doctor last time he dry iced out some skin issues if I could take some of the dry ice home or he had more spots he could remove. The look of confusion on his face was interesting.

Memorial for 1979 O’Hare crash unveiled to honor 273 victims

Abdon M. Pallasch Political Reporter/apallasch@suntimes.com October 15, 2011 5:32PM

Thirty-two years after 273 people were killed in the worst commercial air crash in U.S. history, friends and loved ones of those who died on American Airlines Flight 191 got their memorial Saturday.

Sons, daughters and grandchildren brought sheets of paper to rub relief images of the 273 names inscribed on bricks in a Des Plaines park near the site of the crash on May 25, 1979.

It was the dogged efforts of a class of 6th-graders at Decatur Classical Elementary School in Chicago that made it happen.

Looking for a citizenship project to enter into the Constitutional Rights Foundation’s competition, they heard their assistant principal, Kimberly Jockl, talk about losing her parents in the crash and they seized upon a memorial.

They were undeterred when American Airlines sent them a letter encouraging them to “let it go.”

Eventually, they won the competition and convinced American Airlines to chip in $20,000 for the memorial.

“I think that society should take note of the relentless nature of 6th graders, and learn from them,” said attorney Tom Demetrio, who chaired the foundation and represented 30 of the families of those killed in the crash.

Many of the students, now 13 years old, spoke Saturday, as did U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Des Plaines Mayor Marty Moylan and State Sen. Dan Kotowski, (D-Park Ridge). Emergency personnel who responded to the accident 32 years ago were also on hand.

American Airlines, where is your public relations department? Oy!

To the kids: Thank you. You gave me some hope on a dreary day.

I remember this day very vividly. That night I drove past the crash site on the tollway, which comes within a half mile of the impact point, and could still see small smoldering fires and many, many search lights. I go past this site a few times each week and I always, always remember. Sometimes I imagine the horror of feeling a DC-10 keel over like a boxer hit with a TKO punch in the first 30 seconds of a fight and it sickens me.

I did not know the origin of the memorial and it's a delight to learn it. Thanks.

And on a lighter note: The Celebrity Alphabet in Impressions. Arnold is good, and Jack Nicholson is excellent, but the best may well be Eastwood.

This is definitely smile making. :)

For me today... my new job. I love it. I really do. SO inspiring to work for such a dreamer, and to learn so much with every task I am given because it is so outside the scope of anything I have done before, and the fact that he thinks I am the bees knees...well, that just feels spiffyriffic. :D
