Willing to edit

Don't tell me that! I was hoping to retire early and rich once I got a couple of books published...

;)

Thanks for reading the story - Meg - and for the comment. It was so nice.

Seth - I'd love to get your thoughts on it as well. :) I think yessj already read it....didn't you? lol

As yessj said, I'm working on a non-consent right now. It starts slowly and builds up the characters and hopefully the tension - and then becomes more sexual.

I don't know if it will appeal to the lit crowd or not. People looking for a 'quick one' won't find it here. But, I'm really happy with the general story so far. As soon as I finish the basics - and get draft one done - I'd love to send it to all three of you to get feedback on. If you are willing - I know I'll get great, honest, feedback. Seth - I know you already said you would - thanks! I may try to send it tonight - if I can wrap up this first chapter....

Hugs to you all!
Ryleigh, I would be more than happy to read it for you. Just send it to me and I'll read through it.

I saw your comments on my story as well. Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. I'm in the middle of part two for it now, taking into account people's suggestions.

ps....i have a story coming out in non-consent as well...similar to what you are talking about, multi-chapter, slow build....so i really would love to see your story

Hello all!

I just sent out three PMs. So - you each have a copy of the story. As I said in the PM - I don't expect it to be perfect yet. This is my draft. I want feedback so that as I go back to tweak, I can keep all of your wonderful ideas in mind.

Hugs!

BDSM erotica can. Ask "Jay Merson" or "Rod Caine".

Good to know.

So - how did you get a publisher? Have you been happy with them? Are you able to make enough to writing your career, or do you still need other sources of income?

I see that there are several authors here that are published - which I find encouraging. Gives me hope that it really IS possible! :)

Any hints and suggestions for someone just getting started? Traps to avoid? PUblishers to avoid?

Thanks!

There is a thread in the AH called "For Those Looking To Publish". You'll find the answers in there.

But I'll warn you, up front. Finding a Publisher in 2008 is a lot harder than finding on in 2005 and infinately harder than finding one in 2000. Things are changing rapidly.

The front money is smaller. The commissions smaller. And unless your name is Steven King or Clive Cussler or Danielle Steele the chances of a second book is pretty small as are the chances of finding an Agent or getting your book placed with a large publisher with national outlet.

i think i enjoy writing as a hobby right now....the stories i have are my first, so right now the ability to write without pressure and deadlines is where i want to be. maybe later i'll reevaluate, but i'm satisfied for now

ok all....my first anon feedback on my first story.....disconcerting to say the least, but i got help and i'm better than i was...

I HATE stories that end with "To be continued" or in some other way
indicate that this is only the first chapter without informing the readers
of this important fact BEFORE they open the fucking thing. I hate it
so much that, after years of putting up with this shit, I decided that
all such stories get an automatic rating of one (1).

Since it is obvious that you don't give a fuck about the readers nor
your own story, you have no right to be pissed about this. Also, being a
newbie is no excuse.

sorry meg it happens to all of us ..even the great writers here! ..(though that's not me! ) lol

i'm better now, thanks seth. not sure why someone would want to be mean, but whatever.

for those keeping up, i just posted the second part of the incest story. it can either end there or continue on, i left it that either would work. i'm hoping for it to come out next week or the week after

I wouldn't get too worked up over this guy, Meg. There are plenty of assholes around, everyone has one, as they say.

However, I read your story and you did sort of set yourself up for it. The action ends with father and daughter caught naked after sex then, "To Be Continued..."

Was the story well written? Yes. The problem comes in with the abrupt stop in the action sort of mid stream with a promise to finish later. That works on Desparate Housewives but not so well on Lit.

There's nothing wrong with the story or even ending that way. It's just sort of a "jog" when you run into it because it's just not done often.

Don't let it bother you. Just keep writing.

thanks jenny, i've gotten over it now. i didn't expect it....i was familiar with public comment, but hadn't left private feedback in years. so i had kind of forgotten about it.

i didn't mind where the story ended, i thought it made for a nice cliffhanger.

i submitted part two tonight and gave it an ending. left it up to the readers that it can continue or not. if i don't get positive feedback, i would be fine with dropping it.

now that i'm prepared, i won't pay any attention to comments like that.

thanks for the support

Yep - I agree that some people can be mean for no reason. If the person doesn't like "TBC" stories - that is fine. But - just say so - no need to be rude.

*Hugs to you!*

Just goes to show that my first advice when I joined Lit. was correct - grow a thick skin 'cause there are ***** out there! :)

Keep writing and keep enjoying yourself. Can't let the mean people in the world win.

thanks ryleigh, i got the same advice. got me some skin thickening lotion, smell like lavendar.....so i use a lot....lol

that shit makes me laugh, seriously. its like, fuck i got roped into a story and now cant finish it.

dont let that bother you, instead be like. gotcha ya bitch, you read it, you cant unread it.

you could write stories all day long to pander to most peoples needs/wants but in the end someone wont like it. I think my 2nd story is going to be controversial. but i dont care.

Since you ask ...

... So - how did you get a publisher? ...
That is a truly silly story. I bought an ebook and then complained that it was rubbish, and said I could write a better book than that. The publisher concerned wrote back saying "If you can - show me." Three months later he got a complete book sent to him, and the rest, as they say, is history. (Oh, and I never got my money back for the rubbish book.)

... Have you been happy with [your publisher]? ...
Reasonably, then the publisher was bought by one of the other authors, so I moved to my present one, where I am very happy.

... Are you able to make enough to writing your career, or do you still need other sources of income? ...
Does anyone ever have enough income? (J.K.R. excepted.)

... Any hints and suggestions for someone just getting started? ...
Adhere slavishly to the rules set out by the publisher. It is plain stupid to submit something which you know the publisher will not accept (e.g. Under-18 sex on Literotica; .txt file if the publisher wants .rtf; double quotes on dialogue if the publisher specifies single quotes.)

... Any ... Traps to avoid? ...
Do not have anything to do with any publisher who asks you for money up front, no matter what the excuse is. Both of my publishers prepared and put my books up for sale at NO COST to me. Then they paid (and pay) me according to a pre-agreed royalties scale on a pre-agreed schedule. If a book does not sell they get no money.

If you pay them, then you are doing what is variously called self-publishing or vanity publishing and the publishers are making their money from the fees you pay, whether your book sells or not - so they don't have much incentive to sell it for you.

AND FINALLY - See the green quote in my signature.

On the "To be continued" front, I am quite happy to see that, as it tells me that the author knows where the story is going next. The worse sin is leaving the reader unsure whether there is to be a continuation or not.

It is, I know, a personal foible, but I write top down, that is I start with an idea - followed by a plot outline - followed by a detailed plot- followed by the actual chapters. I really don't understand anyone who doesn't work that way, so my pet hate is the story which ends up with a plea to readers to decide where the story goes next.

HOWEVER, I realise that that is my personal twist on writing and I would never complain to an author who writes differently.

thank you snooper for all your wonderful information on publishing. as i said before, I'm satisfied with keeping it as a hobby for now, but there are many people who are interested in publishing, and the information can be invaluable to them.

thank you for the support. i always like to see the to be continued as well. however, that means you would not like my next submission. at the bottom of it, i put down "the end? to be continued? you decide".....now, having said that, I finished the story. I'm happy with it and how it ended. if it continued it would be like starting a new book with the same characters. anyway, the biggest deal was that i was not prepared for it. i am now, and it won't be a problem in the future. some people have too much time on their hands if they are able to just randomly go around yelling at people. thankfully i'm not that angry of a person :D

We are ALL thankful you are not an angry person. :)

And - yes - snooper - thank you so much for the information. I think it is awesome how you got your start - too funny!

I really want to make a go of this. I love to write - and well - I love erotic, sexual, sensual things. So - seems like a perfect fit to me. :)

*Now to just go out and convince the world....one horny person at a time.*

*snicker, snicker*

Hi everyone! keep up the writing! I wish I had time to write! lol

Hi everyone! keep up the writing! I wish I had time to write! lol
it's hard seth, to find good chunks of time to write. i find that if i have to write/leave/write/leave i can tell in the finished product and it takes longer to write and finish it because i have to keep going back to check on details and make sure it flows correctly.

keep writing down your ideas and thoughts and you'll find time to flesh them out, i have faith in you.

That's why you absolutly have to have a character list and a good outline of the plot and a detailed map of the action before you start writing. It saves a lot of searching back over your story/novel to keep things straight, Meg.

Everyone has the same problem with life interupting writing.

i keep one...but sometimes i can still tell in my style and choice of words when i've left and come back. no biggie, i edit my own work and check for continuity and flow before submission, so it's all good :p

yssej,
I hadn't heard from you about your story, so I was wondering how it was coming along. Let me know how you are doing.
