OK, FOB (that's Friends of the Barn), what's your favorite cure for insomnia?

Hot bath followed by orgasm, or the sports channel.
Never together, though.. :p

Purring kitty laying on my chest works wonders, I'm guessing you don't have that option though.
Heating blanket is good.
Benedryl.
A glass of red wine, if I drink it a few hours before I want to sleep. One glass only, though! For me, any more alcohol than that tends to result in too much sugar in my system, so I wake up after only a few hours or can't sleep at all :(
Imagining a meadow.

But here is my favourite. I imagine myself on a rooftop. It's night in the city, I'm on the roof over the 30th floor, at least. The moon is full, and I tilt my face towards it, closing my eyes and feeling the cool light. I am scantily dressed, and a breeze lifts the edges of my nightie. I step up onto the ledge of the building and stop, toes just at the edge of the void. I tilt my head back again and look at the stars. I smell the night and the city. Sounds drift up from the streets far below. A car door closing, motors running, the rumbling of a train in the distance. I slowly tip forward and begin to fall, and I'm asleep.
*snap!*
Just like that. Works every time.

So, self hypnosis? Meditation of the strangest sort? I don't know, but when I shut everything else off and do this it's quick and efficient. I think my natural safety mechanisms kick in and knock me out before I hit the street. Tapping into my brain's ability to knock me unconscious just as we tap into it in other ways for dopamine, adrenaline etc.

And I feel compelled to say this, now. You asked, and I have shared. So don't knock it, please. Especially without trying it (and it takes a bit of practice). :) Thank you.

Could just suspend a brick above your head and let it drop.

My favorite cures for insomnia? I don't know if I have favorites but I find that chamomile tea helps me get sleepy. Laying down and focusing on my breathing to shut my brain up helps. If I've been laying in bed and just tossing and turning, the best thing for me is to get out of bed and do something. Shortly after I feel more sleepy and find that it comes more easily after I've gone back to my bed. Reading a book helps. If I'm desperate an OTC sleep aid (used sparingly) works wonders but makes the next day hell in the morning.

+1 for sleep hygiene.

No (as in absolutely no) coffee, tea or chocolate after 5 PM

A good run, but not right up to going to bed. It takes an hour or two to get down again.

Reserve the bed for relaxation, sleep and sex. No working while in bed.

Sex before sleeping is normally a winner. Do remember to brush your teeth and take a piss before starting the monkey business!

If I wake up and feel awake, then I was not supposed to sleep. If I let it piss me off, then I won't get more sleep that night.
For me it works better to read a moderately boring but occupationally relevant book. Normally it will knock me out (must be training from all the lectures I have attended), and if I do not fall asleep, I will have read the text that I ought to read anyway.
Fast Fourier Transform rarely fails me.

To some people the blue light from screens seems to reset their internal clocks to daytime. In that case, no computers the last couple of hours before intending to sleep.
And dim the lights.

These are all great suggestions, thank you. I've tried some of these from time to time and I'm open to trying others. Not sure yet if I'm willing to make myself think I'm dreaming about jumping off a 30-story building just yet, but I do find the logic of that approach intriguing. A friend recently mentioned going to a class two learn self-hypnosis to work on his insomnia. I might check in with him to see if he thought the class was at all useful.

Thanks, and if others have other ideas, I'd love to see them.

:rose: :rose: Sweet dreams, I hope :)

On a similar note, and deliberately losing it a bit in mwy 's query, I sometimes use an 'aftercare' self hypnosis for self soothing. Any one else? If so any recommendations?

I missed this earlier. No recommendations, but curious how you go about this, if you are comfortable sharing?

Sure,no huge secret : ). You tube has various options with different spins. None are as good as proper input from someone you really want aftercare from of course but when you are by yourself/ there are restrictions to receiving attention then these are a fill in. MacDonald's sort of aftercare as opposed to fine dining or home cooked meal, but, an option :) . ;)

Oh, I see! McNuggets and a chocolate shake :p
