🧘🏼‍♂️🤾🏻‍♀️Getting Sweaty Again: The 3rd Circuit 🚴🏼‍♂️🏋🏼‍♀️

My ancient Garmin running watch died and I'm looking for another. What do you have? What do you recommend?
I have an old Fitbit that I keep expecting to die but it keeps hanging on. So many good smart watches now a days with good technology in them. But Garmin does seem to be one of the front runners when it comes to running watches.

Sleepy Sunday: How much sleep to you get on average? Does a bad night’s sleep affect your workout? Do you think that lack of sleep affects weight loss/fitness in general? What kind of bed do you have, and do you like it? What kind of mattress do you recommend (I’m in the market for a new one so this is a completely selfish crowdsourcing question). Do you or your significant other snore? Any other sleep issues you feel like sharing?

How much sleep to you get on average? It’s been horrible lately with work/travel and some personal stuff. 7 day average has been around 4 hours a night.

Does a bad night’s sleep affect your workout? It absolutely does for me.

Do you think that lack of sleep affects weight loss/fitness in general? Yes, as my sleep decreases in quality/quantity so does my fitness performance.

What kind of bed do you have, and do you like it? What kind of mattress do you recommend? Love my eight sleep pod and mattress. I like to sleep cold and the pod cools the bed https://www.eightsleep.com

Also look into a weighted blanket, you will thank me later 😊

Do you or your significant other snore? Don’t have one, but my 🐶 Liberty will saw some logs every now and then.

Is there any noise with the Eightsleep pad? I’ve been interested.

Sleepy Sunday: How much sleep to you get on average?
Depends. Some nights I can sleep like a rock and get at least six or seven hours, other nights I’m lucky to get a couple hours.
Does a bad night’s sleep affect your workout?
Not typically. I always drag myself around the gym at least for the first set or two, then I’m good :)
Do you think that lack of sleep affects weight loss/fitness in general?
It likely dampers the weight loss side of it, I think. I feel like that is part of the reason it takes me a while to drop pounds.
What kind of bed do you have, and do you like it? What kind of mattress do you recommend (I’m in the market for a new one so this is a completely selfish crowdsourcing question).
I have a California King, mid-profile bed with a mattress I got off of Wayfair that had good reviews, haha. I don’t remember much about the specifics other than cooling gel memory foam.
Do you or your significant other snore? Any other sleep issues you feel like sharing?
We both tend to snore when we’re sick but other than that, just the pups. It’s like a lullaby.

Sleepy Sunday: How much sleep to you get on average?
I usually get about 6 hrs sleep. I go to bed by 11 and get up at 5 - 5:30. I want to go to bed earlier. I need more sleep.
Does a bad night’s sleep affect your workout?
It affects everything. I feel like I start the day a step behind.
Do you think that lack of sleep affects weight loss/fitness in general?
Yes. The same way stress does.
What kind of bed do you have, and do you like it?
I don’t like my bed. I have a sleep number and I don’t think it’s very comfy. I also had a temperpedic but I thought it was too hot. Now they have the cooling feature which they didn’t have in the past. Maybe I’d like it better.
Do you or your significant other snore?
My husband snores loudly.
Any other sleep issues you feel like sharing?
I talk in my sleep a lot. And sometimes I walk in my sleep. So much fun when I was younger at sleepovers! :)

Sleepy Sunday: How much sleep to you get on average?
I LOVE sleep. I need about 7-8 hours every night; that doesn’t mean I get that much, but ideally . . .

Does a bad night’s sleep affect your workout?
Sure, being tired is the worst and it makes a good excuse to get out of working out.
On the other hand, I think a good workout can (and, for me, does) lead to a good night’s sleep.
For me, if I’m having trouble sleeping, it means I didn’t work hard enough that day--physically, anyway.

Do you think that lack of sleep affects weight loss/fitness in general?
Yes. Lack of sleep is horrible in every way. I think we are all sleep deprived because of too many devices, blue light, stimuli, lack of “real” work (building a log cabin, tending the fields, etc.).
I just got back from camping, I went to bed WAY earlier than I normally would have and I slept like an absolute Bastard!

Nature, air, sun, movement: we need it more than we realize.

What kind of bed do you have, and do you like it?
I have a full bed, I usually sleep on one side of it. I have no idea who makes it. Probably one of the usual ones? 🤷‍♂️ It gets the job done, but I could sleep on a pile of snakes if I was tired enough.

What kind of mattress do you recommend (I’m in the market for a new one so this is a completely selfish crowdsourcing question).
Mine. 🔥😉🔥

Do you or your significant other snore? Any other sleep issues you feel like sharing?
Snore sometimes. I think I’m more of an open mouth breather than snorer.

Other issues? I often look at Lit/tumblr/(and other places) while in bed, let’s just say my sheets need to be changed regularly. 💦🍆 😎

You seem to want to know a lot about our beds, @Love_Is_Blonde. Just saying.

Sleepy Sunday: How much sleep to you get on average?
7-8. Sometimes the schedule becomes a little bit difficult in the winter with hockey because ice time is always late.
Does a bad night’s sleep affect your workout?
It effects literally everything. I hate not getting enough sleep.
Do you think that lack of sleep affects weight loss/fitness in general?
I do believe this is true. Is there scientific evidence of this?
What kind of bed do you have, and do you like it? What kind of mattress do you recommend (I’m in the market for a new one so this is a completely selfish crowdsourcing question).
I can't remember the specific style, but I went to a real mattress place like a grown up and got professional advice (and then paid metric shit tons for it). But it's an amazing mattress, I get good sleep, and I don't wake up sore. I recommend going and getting good advice.
Do you or your significant other snore?
If you fall asleep last, you don't snore.
Any other sleep issues you feel like sharing?
I don't think so, but I do think good sleep and enough of it is underrated. That number is different for some, but I'm also not on board with the "no successful person sleeps seven hours a night." I'm sure plenty do!

I’m a guy who sleeps well. I often get around 7 hours. I can survive on less but that’s what I like getting to function everyday.
Does a bad night’s sleep affect your workout?
It affects everything. Mood, recovery, ambition.
Do you think that lack of sleep affects weight loss/fitness in general?
I know it does. We need sleep to recover and rebuild muscle as much as we need the exercise and the healthy diet. It functions as one big unit that needs to work together.

Had a sleep number previously and didn’t like it that much. I’m intrigued hearing about these cooling beds. That sounds amazing since I’m always warm.

Monday: Role Models- Do you have a fitness role model?
I've talked about these in the past, but I've never thought of them as role models. I do think it's super helpful to have people who have gone through what you will go through or are experts and can help you build a plan that works when it comes to all things fitness. While it's easy to find stuff online, human connection is still a big deal and everyone's goals and ability to there is different, so a one size approach you might find on Google isn't necessarily the best.
Or maybe a good example was set for you as you were growing up?
I don't think in fitness itself. I think work was always active and on your feet, almost like exercise... and now my job is very sedentary. I've realized how much more attention I need to have that I didn't think about then.
Is there someone who showed you the ropes or got you involved with working out?
With biking yes. But we weren't experts, we just buddied up and learned together. That's really how I got active again.
Or were you a role model for someone else?
I don't think so. I'm happy to share my knowledge and I've certainly helped people learn the ropes of bicycle commuting, but that's just because I love biking and won't shut up about it. 😂

I’ve always been relatively lean and played hockey and lacrosse my entire life until the pandemic, so I was in decent weekend-warrior shape, but not obsessed about it.

The pandemic brought a tremendous disruption to my work life and mental health, so upon the suggestion of my doctor, I started using more regular exercise as one of the treatments to help get myself through. The exercise has indeed helped.

Exactly one year ago today, I had a heart event (unrelated to exercise) which caused me to refocus on my exercise routines and, as soon as I was able, take my fitness more seriously.

To celebrate today’s anniversary, I did a nice, long, split workout: cardio, then strength… just because I could. That'll show you, Heart!

As I say often and very unironically, “Happy to be here”.

Great story and good for you man for crushing it and sticking with it even after the battles that have come. 💪

Monday: Role Models- Do you have a fitness role model? Or maybe a good example was set for you as you were growing up?
Growing up I was always on the move with sports so it came easy. I was a flyer for cheer, on the swim team, played basketball, etc.. My brothers played baseball and football, my mom was a runner back then, so physical activity was always encouraged.
Is there someone who showed you the ropes or got you involved with working out? Or were you a role model for someone else?
I did a lot of self education in the beginning. Now, it’s just the struggle of keeping myself accountable and motivated..plus still trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t with my thyroid issues..man, that’s turned out to be a freaking nightmare.

There’s a girl that recently posted on Nextdoor that she’s looking for a walking buddy/gym partner and is super beginner and prepping for gastric surgery. I think I’m going to reach out and see what happens. The introvert in me feels like Im crazy for it, but I like to surprise myself sometimes.

I don’t know if I have (or had) a role model, but I have a lot of things that inspire me.
People like you, for example, who make fitness fun and friendly. My friend who is far greater a health nut than I could ever be, but I don’t like looking like the out-of-shape person next to him, so that helps.
All the Rocky movies. I can’t sit still on a couch and watch Rocky III, I have to be moving.
I‘m certainly not a role model for anyone else. My crippling addiction to Shamrock Shakes and Count Chokula remove me as any possible kind of role model.

I suppose I grew up in a household where being sedentary was unacceptable. My family are not super fitness freaks, by any means, but being reasonable with food and exercise were certainly encouraged (forced 🙂).

I know I need to catch up but I need to get something off my chest.

Swim etiquette. Why do people who frequent pools not know swim etiquette?? Like, for starters, DO NOT SWIM UNDER STRANGERS!! I don't appreciate being on my side of the lane to look down and see someone underneath me. Nothing nefarious, mo cameras were present, but my god is that dangerous!! THIS WAS AN ADULT!!

The kids who were in the pool? Really fucking respectful of space and apologised for splashing too much. I told them not to worry, it's a public pool and they weren't hurting anyone.

/end rant

Role models.
I do not think I have any.. but, that does kinda make sense.
Sometimes I myself forget that we do not share the same cultural heritage, background and all of that.

Role models are not that big of a deal over here, instead.. we move a bit more like a group consisting of extremely private individuals (it makes sense!)

We are taught to be active, encouraged.. forced.. some might say. Right now my city is swarming with runners.. well almost everyone runs.. but, people are training for the big DHL run (all companies are participating, and running against each other.. It is a whole week, and people are competitive!).

Even as kids in schools, we have tons of friendly competitions, I know you do too in the States. But here.. everyone participates. And they are on every level.

Children are strongly encouraged to be active in their after school hours.
7 hours of intensive physical sport is the official goal.
(Teachers will question the parents, if the kids are not a member of a club/team)

We bike everywhere.. all the time.. we bike.. it is not recreational, it is our way of transportation.

If you get a depression.. I kid you not - the first thing your doctor will do, is to prescribe a fitness membership and make sure you join some walking outside teams.
We strongly believe in physical activity, being responsible for yourself and doing what you can.

In general.. and this is most definitely harsh:
In the case of two people applying for the same job.. the physical fittest will get it. (If they are both qualified).

So.. No. I do not have any role models, I have acquaintances and friends in my gym, and those I greet when out walking.
If I have not seen one of the regulars in my area for a while, I will be concerned.

But.. yeah.. I am rambling. It is just.. I think, what I want to convey is: for us.. sports, walking.. taking care of your body and mind.. it is not really something I can isolate.. because, it is an integral part of our culture.
