It’s so interesting to hear your perspective Cat. I live in the country and not especially near town. And even the town that is near me is tiny so I have to go further yet to the one that would have gyms or stores. Your perspective is different than mine in that we would never consider a 7-8 km walk short. To us that’s a good distance. Most Americans would never walk some place that was 4 miles away. Myself included. It’s definitely a mental and cultural thing that we need to overcome.
While I’m not near a larger city, there are plenty of parks to enjoy, gyms within 15 minutes (driving haha) and lots of outdoor space.
Yeah.. this is something that I have to remind myself of, regularly.. while we do talk the same language, have many of the same cultural references.. watch the same movies, read many of the same books.
There are some very deep rooted differences.
If I have to be at a place, and it is less than 3 km away.. I would feel so stupid, if I took the car!
Most people here, they have a 20-25 km limit to how long they want to bike to work.
(And most workplaces here, they have showers and locker rooms, for those that have been biking from far away.. we even did that at university.)
7-8 km is a pleasant walk for most Danes, nothing special.
(If you had to go to work, you would obviously take your bike)
But also.. my city is compact! It is rather small.. we live in small apartments, yeah.. you guys would feel claustrophobic
I know that in the states.. even kids gets their own cars.. albeit used.. But 16 y/o with cars!
(Because.. Everything is soooo far away! Your country is huge!!)
Here.. you get a new bike!! Seriously.. bikes are normal gifts!!! It might be a small thing.. but.. there is a difference: the kids coming home.. red cheeks, hanging their helmets and grabbing a bite of ryebread.
Or, the kids coming home.. relaxed and.. well.. I do not know.. What do they do, when they drive?
Over here.. The kids are always hungry!
