🧘🏼‍♂️🤾🏻‍♀️Getting Sweaty Again: The 3rd Circuit 🚴🏼‍♂️🏋🏼‍♀️

I haven't had my bike with me when I've visited Copenhagen. I either drive when I need to go to other places too in Denmark (car or motorbike), or take the train and walk or use public transportations when I only visit Copenhagen.
But I've noticed the perfect infrastructure for bikes. And it develops even more. (I love the bike bridge you see from Fisketorvet! Cykelslangen I think it's called) I like the development of the traffic in Copenhagen.

I actually find it quite easy to walk on DLB. The different traffic is on different levels so it's easy to follow the right lanes. But the bikes are in such a hurry so if you have to step out of the lane you have to be careful.

Soooo....ahem... Motorbike... 😇
Next time you are over here, riding that.. may I come with you? Be' om!

Yes!! The infrastructure is constantly being developed, new bridges are being made, biking routes through the city, some scenic. Others "fastest possible from A to B" avoiding cars and pedestrians.

Cykelslangen is beautiful!! And rather practical as well.

DLB... I love that bridge, there is always such a good atmosphere.. But, yeah.. You are right, the traffic is on many levels and you need to be able to read the pace.

And.. Do not step carelessly out on the bike lane.. that is definitely not safe! 😅

It’s so interesting to hear your perspective Cat. I live in the country and not especially near town. And even the town that is near me is tiny so I have to go further yet to the one that would have gyms or stores. Your perspective is different than mine in that we would never consider a 7-8 km walk short. To us that’s a good distance. Most Americans would never walk some place that was 4 miles away. Myself included. It’s definitely a mental and cultural thing that we need to overcome.

While I’m not near a larger city, there are plenty of parks to enjoy, gyms within 15 minutes (driving haha) and lots of outdoor space.

Yeah.. this is something that I have to remind myself of, regularly.. while we do talk the same language, have many of the same cultural references.. watch the same movies, read many of the same books.

There are some very deep rooted differences.
If I have to be at a place, and it is less than 3 km away.. I would feel so stupid, if I took the car!
Most people here, they have a 20-25 km limit to how long they want to bike to work.
(And most workplaces here, they have showers and locker rooms, for those that have been biking from far away.. we even did that at university.)

7-8 km is a pleasant walk for most Danes, nothing special.
(If you had to go to work, you would obviously take your bike)

But also.. my city is compact! It is rather small.. we live in small apartments, yeah.. you guys would feel claustrophobic 😆 but, then again.. Danish design, Danish minimalism.. it is a thing, because.. it is our natural culture and something we just do.

I know that in the states.. even kids gets their own cars.. albeit used.. But 16 y/o with cars!
(Because.. Everything is soooo far away! Your country is huge!!)

Here.. you get a new bike!! Seriously.. bikes are normal gifts!!! It might be a small thing.. but.. there is a difference: the kids coming home.. red cheeks, hanging their helmets and grabbing a bite of ryebread.

Or, the kids coming home.. relaxed and.. well.. I do not know.. What do they do, when they drive? 🙈 I have no experience!

Over here.. The kids are always hungry! 🤣

Your Town, or wherever you live- is it conducive to your fitness journey?
The only hinderance to a fitness journey is the weather. For seven months a year it’s lovely outside to work out, except today when it’s supposed to get to 100F or 38C. The infrastructure here is great as all our lakes and riverfronts and even creeks have dedicated running/walking and bike paths and when I used to work downtown I’d bike to work a lot of days when it was nice on dedicated lanes of traffic for bikes. But yeah, our winters are the same as Moscows…..so outdoor fun ends for me during that, although there are locals who persist and cross country ski, skate on the lakes, downhill, etc so the city doesn’t shut down.
Do you live somewhere where it is easy to get outside for a workout, or where there are plenty of gyms or other venues that you use to exercise?
So I described the outside, and there are gyms galore here but I haven’t belonged since before COVID, but I do have equipment in my basement
Or is it hard to find somewhere to workout because where you live is either too crowded or too far away from resources you would like to use?
Availability of infrastructure and resources aren’t my excuse as to why I skip days, it’s just will power.

Most here would never even consider biking half that far to work. Especially once you factor in being sweaty and gross since we have few places that would have locker rooms or showers. My daily commute falls with in that distance basically and I can't fathom doing that. :) Its just interesting how our cultures vary so much in that way.

We are not minimalist at all. I have a large farmhouse and live on over an acre of land surrounded by agricultural crop fields. Many here live in cities though with much smaller property sizes and better infrastructure for biking or walking.
I know that in the states.. even kids gets their own cars.. albeit used.. But 16 y/o with cars!

Oh yeah, plenty of kids near us even get trucks, SUVs, or Jeeps when turning 16 partly because of the farm land that we live in but also partly because it's expected. We are also very spread apart in our geography though.
Here.. you get a new bike!! Seriously.. bikes are normal gifts!!! It might be a small thing.. but.. there is a difference: the kids coming home.. red cheeks, hanging their helmets and grabbing a bite of ryebread.

A warm slice of fresh bread with butter does sound delicious. Thanks! ;)
Many of our kids still ride bikes though and play at parks and in our yards. They come inside hungry as well and want snacks too.
And once they start driving, much of their driving is back and forth from school, sports, or jobs. So thankfully there is a fair amount of activity still going on. Just not the extra activity of biking to and from.

I'm just intrigued by it all. It's not bad either way. Just a curious thing how weather, geography, culture, infrastructure, and safety all play a part in impacting this one thing.

Your Town, or wherever you live- is it conducive to your fitness journey?
So far yes, I think it has been in the past not only month but 3 years. I did a comparison/transformation photo today, and the results are just making me not only happy but feel great about myself.

where there are plenty of gyms or other venues that you use to exercise?
Yes, the Ymca branch I belong to has to easy locations, one is 15 minute drive away and the other which has my preferred choice of lap pool is 30 minutes away. The other venues are parks that have walking trails, that I love. Or simply walking around my neighborhood is an easy option for when I am pressed on time, just wish it wasn't so stinking hot. Ready for cooler weather in that sense.

Or is it hard to find somewhere to workout because where you live is either too crowded or too far away from resources you would like to use?
I already have been using resources that are simple and everyday. Like parking further away from the store, I hate crowds. Doing simple quick exercises with household chores, call me odd but I love to clean it relaxes me. And yard work is one awesome workout if you ask me.

Good morning All! It’s Tuesday! I loved reading about the prevalence of biking vs driving from yesterday’s posts, and that actually leads into today’s topic…

Tuesday: Your Town, or wherever you live- is it conducive to your fitness journey? Do you live somewhere where it is easy to get outside for a workout, or where there are plenty of gyms or other venues that you use to exercise? Or is it hard to find somewhere to workout because where you live is either too crowded or too far away from resources you would like to use?

Enjoy your Tuesday, All 🩵
I live in the suburbs of a small town (70 000 habitants) and it's easy for me to find some were to run. Gym in no problem. There are several to choose from. My "problem" is to get back into the routine. But my goal is to have a routine with gym training in mid October.

There are plenty of things to do and places to go near me. There are also a lot of places to go if you want to get out into the country or mountains. I’ve got nice paths through the woods near my house. That’s where I’ve been walking lately. But I think I’m rejoining my gym later this week. It is also pretty convenient bc it’s on my way home from work.

I don’t like working out inside at home. I need to get out of the house so I’m glad there are so many choices.

@Love_Is_Blonde , asked her before posting this, but wanted this as a reminder to myself that 3 years, does pay off when I eat right/strict diet with few cheat days, and do some kind of physical activity everyday, even if it is just 30 minutes of walking. View attachment 2263920
What great results! Congrats on figuring out what works for you. So satisfying to find something that works. It’s not easy!

Pretty ok, yes. We could be better for safe biking spaces, but it's ok and it's easy for me to go for a run in either a flatter area or a few hills.
Do you live somewhere where it is easy to get outside for a workout, or where there are plenty of gyms or other venues that you use to exercise?
My workouts are sports or biking/walking/running, so very easy most of the year. I've stopped trying to shoehorn myself into being a gym guy, but there are plenty if needed.
Or is it hard to find somewhere to workout because where you live is either too crowded or too far away from resources you would like to use?
The multi use path is very crowded when it's nice, so the makes it so hard to bike on. If you're just out and don't mind slowing down often, it's fine. But if you want to ride at any consistent pace, it's not great. And the streets aren't super safe, so it's tough.

I really love reading this. Learning.
I wish I lived in a place that was walkable more... It's always been a bit of a fantasy. At the sane time, I also prefer the country and smaller areas with fewer people around.
I'm 30-45min from places, and we have a lot of blind curves out here (you take your life into your own hands if you walk on some of these roads).
But I'm so fascinated by the walkability of some areas compared to others. I know when I've visited cities places and towns where walking was preferred over cars, I moved a whole lot more, saw more, explored and experienced more...

I really enjoy your perspective.

It’s Pop Quiz time so get out a sheet of paper and a pencil…just kidding everything is online now. Just don’t peek at your neighbor’s screen.

When you’re finished, let us know how you did. Were there any questions you were surprised to get wrong? Which ones?

Bonus assignment in case you bombed the quiz: find a fun online quiz for us to take and post it here. (Doesn’t have to be fitness related.)

Obviously I'm an awesome student (by that I mean complete nerd alert), so I did fairly well, but the one about resting muscles shocked me most. Though there were a couple others, that one was the one I remember.

I never did see "shoot the hostage" as an answer though, which is my go to for pop quizzes.

17/30 is not good at all. But fair enough, I failed on the statistic questions.
I wonder if my singing voice will be improved from running? :D

21/30, not bad, didn't know the singing one, and i thought the percent on one of the questions would be higher.

26/30 💃
But like @hotwords229_A said about disputing some of them..Spending 10 years in Orthopedics, I still stand by runners have more knee issues than non-runners 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Same for me. Although I’m prepared to argue some of those questions. 🤣

22/30 ugh! That’s only a 73%. Haha. But still fun to do and test my knowledge.
I agree with @hotwords229_A though and would dispute a few of those.

I think you all are right! I’ll follow the advice of someone who works in Orthopedics for sure.

Who found this quiz anyway?? Meep!!

I don't disagree with the running one, that answer is correct.

Running isn't inherently hard on the knees, in fact, studies show it can help reduce arthritis in the knees. Poor body mechanics, being in the wrong shoes, and/or weakness in your quads, hamstrings, and/or IT bands is the more likely source of knee pain that starts or increases when running.

Should you cross train? Yes. Is biking or swimming lower impact? Certainly. Do your knees hurt because you run? That likely isn't the root cause, no.

Yeah, I wasn’t speaking specifically to arthritis but more overuse injuries. Nine times out of ten, that was my knee pain patient on the schedule.

This is what I think that question is getting at, though. That isn't pain from the act of running, it's pain from not properly preparing your body and/or properly recovering before going again.

Good morning! ☀️
