2008 News & Views: Discussion and Announcements for the Survivorphile

Yeah I'm going the photo route myself. For my Illustrated poem (currently pending), I simply used a picture of it snowing outside, for my poem about winter. Pictures don't have to be erotic themselves, they can be of scenery that takes place in the environment of the story as well.

After starting into the contest this late in the year, I'm not counting on much from Immunities and I fully intend to fill all my categories. :)

I never took the illustrated categories as having to include erotic pictures. The photos could be scenery, like you mentioned. I guess people are more likely to expect erotic pictures for an illustrated story more than for an illustrated poem. Don't you think so?

I only ever did one illustrated submission. That was an illustrated poem last year. I painted a picture (non-erotic) yesterday that I intend to use for an illustrated poem.

Yeah, I went through the list of illustrated stories and virtually all of the ones here have erotic pictures of some sort. That may be what's expected, but it certainly doesn't seem to be against the rules to be a scenery image. That's my plan anyways, although if I get a few immunities I may just skip the illustrated story category. I already have the poem one covered. :)

SRS, so sorry to hear about your daughter and her fiance. Keeping good thoughts for you, your daughter, and your family as she recovers.

Wow, the things people can get accused of here, and all in the name of ethics. No, it's nothing as sinister as you might want to imagine... On March 31st my daughter was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident that killed her fiance and I have been spending most of my waking hours either at the hospital or traveling to and from the three different hospitals she has been in since then... that's 11 weeks now.

I have managed to get a few moments to write a couple of stories and several poems. Some of the emotions and observations are coming out in my poetry as I try to deal with it all: Tidal, and watch for "Pain" and "Dragoon" for a look at the darker side of it all. There is no immediate end in sight so there will be more, hopefully lighter poetry and perhaps a story or two.

:rose: Best wishes for your daughter's full recovery. They say the heart is often the harder part to heal.

hi guys,

O.k. so I thought I wrote soft sweet and romantic stories. Well I tried my hand at nonconsent/reluctance and the story was rejected for having too much violence.

Blah... I'm off to the editor's forum to see if someone can read my story and fix it.

Oh and I didn't win immunity again this week. I think they lost the 11 ball, or maybe that number doesn't exist in England.

Erin

 Now you've got me scared. I think I took an immunity in that cat this year. I have a hard time with it.

Wasn't Harry Potter 11 when he first appeared in the books?

scared of you! LOL
Your story got rejected? Did you read the new poems today? There's one about pedophilia and one about a bloody rape! I don't know how those got through. Maybe they were distracted by your story. LOL

I really enjoyed Pain. I was lucky enough to do the New Poems Review that day. Creativity is a blessed coping mechanism.

If any of you have not read "Pain," I strongly recommend it.

Yeaaaaa! We're back. I tried to reply 3 days ago, but the boards were down for over 2 days. Upgrades or problems?

Any yoohoo, I sent in a kidnap/revenge tale late Dec. Wow, I didn't realize it has been THAT long! It was rejected as too violent It has to be harsh to support the lessons learned. I think the problem was that I left part 1 at a cliff-hanger where I make you wonder if the protagonist was killed....or not. I did have it reviewed and used some of his comments, but had to leave the WONDER or lose impact. It was rejected again. I explained the outline and offered to put part 2 into part 1, making it 2 chapters in one submission. Still rejected.

It's not finished yet, but it will have to be a 'novella' instead. Discouraging.
I can send part 1 to you if you like. Maybe it will give you an idea of where the toe line is now.

I'm right here, Sheila. Tell us, how often do you have to dust your angel wings?

I can just fluff my wings. It's this damn halo that keeps getting tarnished! Fuck!
Now, I think I bent it.

tsk, tsk. Don't fuck the halo. There's a MUCH better way. I have to polish my horn every day or....

Looking at your angel disguise, aren't you wearing too much? Anything more than the wings is really overkill. Just my fashion 2 cents. :rose: I'll be watching for your updated AV. :D

BTW, settle a raging debate between me and my alts about your pen name. Is it 'short' for Lady and Saint Freak in Bed? I didn't like the other choices.

I tried to reply a few days ago and it didn't post. Of course, that could have just been my own innate inability to do something as simple as clicking the "submit reply" button.

Erin, good luck with your nonconsent/reluctance story. They aren't easy; I managed one, but it's languishing in the mid-3's scorewise. It's hard not to have violence in a nonconsent story, I'd think.

I finally finished a story and submitted it yesterday! Now if I can just stay focused enough to write down the other ideas that have been bouncing around my head for weeks...

The thing I like best about the Survivor contest is that it encourages me to write in different categories than I normally would. Don't you think that's kinda cool?

Through my efforts last year and with the help of a bi friend, I discovered that I can actually write gay male stories fairly well for a girl. LOL

However, it can be disappointing when a story is not well-received. My newest story to post, my 1st attempt at an illustrated story, has a really low rating so far. :(

I hope I'll get some comments on it to see what people liked and didn't like.

Yeah I love the diversity of the survivor competition myself. I just finished writing a story from a first person female perspective and while a challenge I think I actually did it reasonably well.

I read your Illustrated story, the story itself was fine but the illustrations are probably what is hurting your score. They are perhaps a little too abstract for what people are looking for in that category.

Most illustrated stories get low ratings. Readers are expecting to see explicit photos with the story, and when they don't get them, they vote low. Unfortunately, most readers aren't aware that we *can't* use explicit photos. You can do lingerie or underwear, but that's about it. Even thongs are not guaranteed to pass muster if the shot centers too closely between the legs.

Audio stories tend to get voted low too unless you really *act* out. By that, I mean moaning and such.

Thanks for the input. Which brings up another benefit of the Survivor contest, I've been learning what the readers in different categories expect.

As far as the photos, I took a look at several stories in the category before creating my pics. Some of the photos were quite explicit- including close-ups of actual intercourse. But I read the submission guidelines, and decided to go the safe route. I'm curious as to how such explicit material does get accepted. Anyway, it's not my call. (Thank, God!)

I had a picture in a thong in one of my stories, and it didn't get through. They didn't reject the story, they just left out that one picture.

The last time I had a gander at the illustrated category, I didn't see any explicit stuff except for stuff that was drawn. They can get away with explicit drawn or created pictures... just not *supposed* to use explicit photographs.

Lit and Lady - My goodness stop flirting, or get a room at least. I'm not a voyeur, well not yet at least :)

Erin

LOL
Flirting? Was I flirting?
Maybe you saw my wings flittering and got confused.

I think it's because there is no record of the age of the subjects. The pornographic sirtes that advertise on Lit. have free samples available of hardcore photos, but they also have careful records of who posed in them and their ages. Lit. has no such record of any subjects in illustrated stories. If I were to use an erotic pic of my voluptuous 16 year old niece, somebody might call them on it, and Lit. would be in big trouble. Of course, drawings are of nobody. Even an extremely lifelike one would be acceptable.
