2008 News & Views: Discussion and Announcements for the Survivorphile

Mine are not experiences so much as fantasies. What I meant about drawing on our experiences is that we put little things in that we've experienced in life. Like, when I picture an office in a story I'm writing, in order to describe it, it's always one I've been in somewhere. I'm not great at imagining places I've never been or seen in movies, etc.

I don't find that works well for me either. :rose:

I expected my stories to be nearly all fantasies and very little from reality. Well, I took a cue from Strazynsky (creator/author of Babylon 5) - don't tell him, he hasn't missed it yet. Though I don't know how he still plays billiards!

Anyway, his epic was a skeletal yet complete tale across a 5 year arc. He created his characters and a little of their history, then set them free. He said he opened the window on their world, listened a bit, then slammed the window and wrote what he heard. His big problem was not getting them to speak, but getting them to SHUT UP! The story came to TV as a 110 chapter novel + 5 movies. An amazing and very touching opus.

I know the characters in my EMANCIPATION, Out of the Closet, Milky MILF, French This and some of those in Redating Game and Shower Towel. Few of the events in those stories really happened. I used what I knew of the real people, added useful traits and set them free. They not only wrote their own tales, but stopped me from writing my own silly bits. I put much more detail in my How I Managed My Muse! story.

I started the night picnic story yesterday, but kept getting stuck because I was trying to scribble it in a notebook while monitoring a special ed student in a chorus class that was watching "Phantom of the Opera". Somehow, loud operatic singing coupled with snarky comments from an adolescent male are not conducive to writing.

Some of my stories are personal experiences that I was able to fictionalize because I separated the experiences from the characters. Those stories are more plot driven, so it didn't matter who the participants were. The two series I mentioned, though, were intended to be character-driven, so I couldn't really separate myself and the associated guy from the characters, though I finally managed to do that to a degree with "Brown Eyes", which made the last chapter I did much easier and more pleasant to write.

I lost count of how many times I was called a variation of a "cheating whore" when my Loving Wives series was posting. Um... I'm not married. lol

Boxlicker, thanks for the score update :)

Whenever I write a story that is true and from personal experience, I get hammered with comments that it could never happen. I never get those comments on my stories that are completely fictional. Go figure.

I was in a writer's group one night and the leader shared a bit of advice from a professor who had said that there are some things that can happen in real life but should never be put in fiction because they are just too unbelievable. I guess it's up to us to get the reader to buy into it. Doesn't always work for me.

I've seen him. He's using a chopstick and losing badly.

Exactly, we take little bits from reality and thread it through a network of story. I like it when my characters take me someplace I never expected.

LOL I've gotten that too and I'm not married either. Nor would I do the things my characters do.

I'm hoping to do it soon. Life has been very busy, no time for anything at all, lately... :(

Take care of yourself, first and foremost. :rose:

I understand. It wasn't meant as a complaint. I know we all go through times in our lives when Literotica is NOT top priority.

(Is it blasphemous to say such things? LOL)

I'm sitting here in air conditioning, still unable to write, but my bathroom's being painted :D

Oh I didn' win immunity again this week. If I don't win any immunities I'm seriously screwed in this contest.

O.k. thats my regular Wednesday night whining.

Erin

Nah, just means you'll need to stretch a bit and write a story in every cat. I did it last year. Some of the cats I was least interested in turned out the best. I'm not into horror AT ALL but that story ended up winning a yearly award this year for reader's choice. I never would have thought of doing essays but I got some of the BEST feedback from them. You can do it! :rose:

See I don't have the technology to do an audio poem or audio story submission. I also don't have any pictures to do an erotic illustrated story. I'm sure I could do a story with non erotic pictures but I would piss off people.
I do plan on writing in every other category. God help me when I have to do the transsexual stories.

Erin

If you have a microphone. You can download a program called Audacity. It's free and what I always used.

What Crim said, but also, I don't see anything in the rules to suggest that YOU have to read it. You could ask someone to read it and then listen to the recording to see whether you want to submit it. I will quote the rules below.

"Audio stories and poems: All audio stories must be 750 words or more to be eligible for the contest. There is no minimum length for poetry submissions. The accompanying text must be an accurate transcript of the submitted audio, and must be posted in the Text With Audio or Poetry With Audio categories as applicable. See Audio Story FAQ for information on submitting work."

Illustrated can be photographs as well. I did a story last year of a couple and took pictures of the woods near my house where I set the story then set them into the document. Yes, some people didn't love me for it, but it fulfilled the category. You could do something more erotic.

As for the transexual cat, I think it's crossdressing too. :rose:

Yeah I'm going the photo route myself. For my Illustrated poem (currently pending), I simply used a picture of it snowing outside, for my poem about winter. Pictures don't have to be erotic themselves, they can be of scenery that takes place in the environment of the story as well.

After starting into the contest this late in the year, I'm not counting on much from Immunities and I fully intend to fill all my categories. :)

Never count on immunities, but don't give up on them either.
It's only June!

They really aren't that difficult, and there are quite a few of them around. One thing to remember is to treat a M to F TS as a lady, using female pronouns, etc.

You can also write about crossdressers. They would almost always be men who dress as women, because the opposite just doesn't amount to anything.

Lucky you have a/c. We don't but it rained yesterday and cooled down.
What colour is your bathroom being painted?

Erin

My younger daughter wanted it royal blue; she's really into the ocean, and wanted the bathroom to look like water. We explained to her that that would make the bathroom too dark. My man decided to paint it light blue, and he's going to sponge white clouds onto the ceiling.

I think there's a story possibility in that; a couple painting a room, getting into a little bit of a paint fight, and then showering together to wash it off.

I didn't try the audio categories, but that's because I'm too technologically declined to even begin to figure it out. Erin, I'm sure your immunity number will come up soon!

You should hit an immunity about once every seven weeks. Seven numbers are pulled out of 49 so your chance of hitting one is one in seven. Since there are 53 Wednesdays, that is 7 and 4/7 immunities this year, on average.

ETA: The audio and illustrated categories are tough. They are both referred to as "Multi-media" and even finding directions on how to submit in them is hard.

My little girl wanted a blue bathroom, but that's because of the whole ocean thing. If she could have an entire room decorated like the ocean, with plenty of dolphins around, she'd be in heaven. lol. But we only have one bathroom, so it has to please the entire family.

I've finally gotten some story ideas percolating; the problem is, they're novel-length instead of short stories, and I'm not sure I can sustain them. :(

Wow

Perhaps he intends to sandbag, something like the winner did last year. He can't do the same thing, but he can refrain from posting his stories until Nerw Year's Eve. It is legal to do that, although I consider it unethical, :(
and would never do it myself.

Wow, the things people can get accused of here, and all in the name of ethics. No, it's nothing as sinister as you might want to imagine... On March 31st my daughter was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident that killed her fiance and I have been spending most of my waking hours either at the hospital or traveling to and from the three different hospitals she has been in since then... that's 11 weeks now.

I have managed to get a few moments to write a couple of stories and several poems. Some of the emotions and observations are coming out in my poetry as I try to deal with it all: Tidal, and watch for "Pain" and "Dragoon" for a look at the darker side of it all. There is no immediate end in sight so there will be more, hopefully lighter poetry and perhaps a story or two.

That's horrible. :rose: I hope she recovers totally (her body and her heart).

I wasn't accusing you; I was just mentioning the possibility, because of what has happened in the past. :D

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter, and I wish her all the best. :rose::rose::rose:
