Anybody know how movie theaters stay open?

Our local theaters were doing so bad, we’ve had close to four or five shut down. Only two multi-screen places hung on after the lockdowns. They survived by pre-selling Tix, going to an App style sign in where you could pay and pick your seats. The smaller theaters in the multi-plex have gone to BarcaLounger type seating (which is kind of cool) but the bigger ones in the venue have the standard type seating although upgraded…rocking chair type and a little bigger than I remember.

Took the kid to see a Star Wars flick years ago and got the cool seats. Saw the last Top Gun installment recently. The food court seemed to be the same?

He's a distant ancester of the banned vonbismark, the alt rorythesnitch created the same day as roryn. (I can't believe I just typed that). :)

Damn. I thought this was about largely empty movie theaters.

I guess I could Google it. What's the fun in that? Plus I'd get a bunch of movie ads. :)

The demographics shifted. Teens watched teen shows while adults vegged in cinemas. And then the adults netflixed while the teens went to cinemas. Maybe the demographics are shifting again. I haven't seen a movie ad in some years. I suppose cinemas still exist somewhere.

Three stable geniuses ignoring $15.8 billion of movie theater revenue in 2024. 😄

Are all MAGA sheep clueless about business and economics, or just the sheep in this forum?

While those numbers are fairly consistent, you’d have to put things in context. The movie industry has been trending down According to these numbers. Throw out self inflicted wound of covid for those couple-three years and we’re just getting back to early ‘00’s numbers.

Couple things that jumped out…Tix prices and Tix sold. I’d think those two data points would make the Hollywood brass shat their diapers…

The lineups at local cinemas are mostly sequels and comic book sequels. The furniture pics show upgrades, especially in the front row seats, like recliners and couches. They try to provide luxury experiences to compete with home comfort. The result is high ticket prices to watch severely retreaded crap.
It must be about time for a new Robin Hood. :)

Last time I went to to the movies, I paid good money to watch a load of people eat their dinner whilst adverts played on the screen, then I fell asleep.

DuckDuckGo web browser also let's you watch youtube without the ads using DuckPlayer👍👍

think by now just nostalgia but was thinking the same made a brand new on here labeled it "luxury theaters"

There are few cars in the parking lots. :)

The stable geniuses can’t help themselves. They compulsively spew nonsense when confronted with actual data. 😆

"I don't want to see a movie in a movie theater.
Sometimes, I drive by and it looks as though nobody is there and so it reinforces that people agree with me that nobody else wants to see a movie in a movie theater.
I declare that movie theaters fail and now wonder why they are wasting money and how they are still in existence"

Dude, Hooters still exists.

It amazes me the theaters recovered as well as they did from Covid. Our local theater parking lot is full. Especially when a popular movie is playing.

Does the "film industry" pay them to stay open? They can't be making money. It's not friggin' tax dollars is it? :)
They used to stay open by selling popcorn and stuff. The film industry doesn’t pay them, unless it’s for sneak previews or opinion maker screenings.
The theaters rent themselves out for events, special screenings, live at the met, the nutcracker and stuff like that.

No, Hisarpy, err, scuse me, Glamorilla.... that would be you.

Between all twenty of your active Lit accounts, you have Rory beat many times over. You, of all people, should no better than bitch about other people's alts when you have, like, twenty of them yourself, mr.RebelSoul, or should I say, justplainjeff.

But quite honestly, Saint Ann's question is a fair question! I don't say this often as she isn't the brightest bulb on the tree but she does make a good point here, and I'll try to answer fairly (Because I grudgingly do owe her that):

I think there have been a couple things affecting the movie industry. A combination of things, really.

First, COVID. Whether you think COVID was a manufactured hoax or a liberal plot for control (or whatever ignorant cocakmammy theory you have; believe me if you've been on this forum long enough you've heard 'em all) the fact is, it did have a huge affect on movie attendance, from which they've never fully recovered.

Second, they have succeeded in pricing out a fair number of people, especially families. Between $25 movie tickets, $6 small cokes, $10 popcorns, you and your family could be in it for up to $200 per night just to see the latest "Transformers Vs. Batman IX: Faster and Definitely more Furious" movie.

Which brings me to point #3: Most movies suck. It's all superhero, marvel action retread stuff dumbed down for kids these days; lots of action, not a lot of acting or story. Rarely is there anything that comes through that I actually want to see, let alone waste $40 (after snacks, etc.) to go see.

And then, you have netflix, all this streaming crap, and big screen TV's, and most people would just rather watch it on DVD on a big screen TV rather than waste time paying $40 to see it in a crowded theater with a bunch of people who may have COVID.

Every time I see you call someone stupid, I laugh so hard I pee a little bit. :)
