ARCHIVAL DISCUSSION to 11-14-08

ok,

how about this sun, may 21?

thanks for volunteering

Does anyone

find a few too many feedback requests? things look cluttered. i know some people wanted stories to stand for comment, and i've generally allowed that, but it seems a bit too much, so today i've moved some to story feedback.

i don't want rumple's piece to get lost.

here is what i'm doing more or less. i'll move out stories when there are too many, and where the poster is new AND where no regular persons, like dr mab, pick it up.

comment?

If there's room on the queue for me, I've got a short/short (less than 1000 words) I'm trying make decisions about. It isn't erotic per se and may not be Lit worthy, but I'm interested in opinions.

hi mal

if the story is of a type possibly submittable to Lit, we're interested; it does not have to be porn.

as to its worthiness, don't try to judge that, just write it and let others give feedback.

since things are a bit slow, you could go as early as next Sun May 28. let me know.

---
note: incidentally, 'critiques' are meant to be at least partly public, so that others may see and relate theirs to yours. i know it may seem artificial, but perhaps you could post some of your key points, summarized, so we in the peanut gallery can see them!

I believe Rumple has decided to post them himself, since we were involved in a rather lengthy conversation on the subject :)

Shall I have the story available before the 28th? (if my interpretation is right?) I did read the information file ...once... perhaps I need to refresh myself. :)

Hi Mal,

yes, fine, go ahead on the 28th. i'm going to assume--take on trust-- that you're going to continue to be involved in this circle, offering, i.e., posting, critiques where you have something to say, and participating in other threads.

it's great to have you on board, and from what I can see, your comments shows lots of both insight and articulateness.

Thank you. I try to act with integrity. My one failing is a tendency to say nothing at all when I have nothing nice to say. I'm sure you'll all encourage me away from this particular habit ;)

we'll certainly encourage you NOT follow a pattern of keeping quiet, though there is no need to comment on every story.

as far as negative and positive, it's a goal of a reviewer or 'feedback' person to have some kind of balance. however if there's nothing you like about the story, you should frankly and briefly state a couple of the issues in a way that is not personal, and let it go at that. some of us use the line 'this is not my cup of tea,' which makes it clear that *my like or dislike is NOT always a marker of quality.
---

All of these points are in the 'what's going on' thread, including guidelines for situations of great reviewer unhappiness. essentially the group tries to follow a golden rule, one might say: dish out the sort of stuff you would be not unhappy (or at least not insulted or demolished) to see come your way.

So, who goes next? I'm all ready to make good my intentions. I got a lot of very useful comments on my little piece and now have to let them stew for a while.

HI Malachite,

Sorry about the delay in responding. I think everyone knows we await volunteers. If you or anyone would like to personally solicit them, from among those who've been around here, feel free.

:rose:

Thanks for your recent contributions!

Hm. Might have to wait for recent events to calm a bit.

Got anything writerly you wanna talk about until then?

Pure,

I was wondering if stories are still being accepted for discussion and critique?

If so, I have a bit of work that I could use some other eyes to look at and comment. It is a chapter of a much longer work that is what I'm struggling with to bring together into a novel.

I am not a particularly good writer and I am finding that the novel is more than an extended short story and even different from a series of short stories based upon the same theme.

It is similar to trying to think of a sword as being simply a very long dagger.

Matadore, I'd like a chance to help you on your novel writing attempt. I learned the same lesson when I finally completed a novel earlier this year, which has me going back to all my aborted attempts to see what can be done. I'd be interested in hearing other's thoughts on the matter and in sharin gmy own views (like that's such a shock!) Please, put your piece in the queue when Pure gives you a go ahead.

TY for your offer!

Mal,
Thank you for your kind offer. I will do just that!

hi matadore

sorry about the delay. have you posted any critiques. if there has been one (of a story in the main queue) and you promise one on your mother's grave, we can discuss how soon you can go--- could be very soon.

Hi Pure,

Hopefully I'll be able to get back to contributing to this circle now that I'm almost graduated. :D

I have a rewrite based on an earlier posting in here, but I can't find any stories up for discussion right now to earn my keep. LOL

So, what do I do? Or have I gone blind from working too much?

More than one

Pure,

I too regret my tardiness in returning your post.

Mom's not dead, yet, but I get your drift.

I have written more than two critiques that were on official postings. I don't recall an reaction (either way) to any of those by the authors, but that may be just me missing something. If such is the case, I appologize now to the author. I intend to continue with the occasional crit, but I haven't seemed to have seen many stories posted for review of late.

I was wondering about the ramifications of reworking a Halloween Contest story that I posted in another H Contest. I got few hits, but most were "good" of the ones that weren't, the biggest complaint was the length (it was too short...hummm, where have I heard that comment before?)

The reworking that I spoke of would, in addition to adding to the plot , characters, and locations, I would tweak the original as well.

What would be your opinion on such a plan? This might not be the only work that I would enter, BTW.

Thanks, M

hi m

I think a rework of a posted story is ok. i would gather it hasn't been read and analyzed to death by anyone here?

anyone have a problem with that? do you want to go this Sun, Jul 30?
