Rather than doing anything to the nasal cavity?
Potentially.

Early Ortho can address some issues, although it's normally in relation to jaw and throat development.

I realised I missed this earlier:
And which cognitive and sensory functions are involved?
We're still figuring it out. There's measurable executive functioning improvements when sleep is stabilized.

How nerdy do you want to get?
I'm thinking we need a science thread so I can talk about amyloid beta

So the fact that I never had the orthodontia that I needed when I was a kid could be part of the reason for my poor sleep, and not just tooth problems? *sigh*

And given that I have ADHD with executive functioning problems already, I suppose this means I should *really* get on top of my poor sleeping habits/insomnia.

I wanna get SO nerdy! :D

Ironically, the conversation about sleep is definitely related to pleasure. And pleasure being the missing link in the regulation of sleep.

I think it was fara who mentioned that she masturbates before bed. I've been playing around with an unawake wank: the act of getting off before dozing off. I think it's helping me sleep better. It's still a little too early to tell, but anecdotally, it's working.

Sleep is an exceptionally pleasurable pursuit for me. I love rest! If I don't know what my body needs, I'll put myself to sleep and typically wake up all kinds of better.

Do y'all regularly masturbate before bed?
Do you find sleep to be a pleasurable pursuit?

Absolutely.

Sleep is crucial in dopamine sensitive brains. I also have ADHD and just cannot function if I don't get sleep.

The single most helpful thing we can do to get a good night's rest is to stop consuming blue light after about 6pm. But fuck that! That's when lit gets interesting ...

I don't regularly masturbate before bed, I go through cycles (not monthly Lol) of wanting to and not, with not usually being the default. Maybe I should try doing it more often...

Yeah, no blue light after 6 pm?? That's not going to happen 😂 But this is all fascinating & I am going to be better about my sleep hygiene. Thank you for talking about it!

feel like we ( meaning black and brown people ) need to empower ourselves and realize they can succeed, I do feel we have to work harder and be exceptional to succeed, but there is opportunity.

If I was someone in great power, I know I'd hook up my family, friends and listen more, to someone who wants a opportunity and has similar life experiences. Of course, before that, I'll give the most pivotal positions, to anyone whose going to help grow my enterprise, but beyond that, I'd give some hook ups.

I don't mind anyone else using the word privilege, but I'm more careful in using the word.

I disagree with this. I'm a woc and also not trying to start an argument with the only other woc I've seen here (Hi be my friend) but just want to provide my view and experience as someone with a lot of intersectionality (woman, immigrant, economic status and woc).

It is the fact that we have to work much harder and be exceptional to suceed what makes those that don't have to do that have privilege.

We can sit here all day and tokenize ourselves that if we work hard we can make it but the system is rigged against marginalized people. We may move up the ladder but other groups may move quicker, make more money by doing way less, that's privilege.

Also BIPOC are not a monolithic group and we all come from different experiences. I have a lot of privilege being lighter skin and having being able to immigrate to this country with documents but acknowledging this doesn't take away from the fact that I'm still an immigrant and that I grew up poor etc etc. It also doesn't mean that I haven't have to work so much harder than the mediocre white men (or Black and Brown men sometimes) to achieve what I have achieve in spite of at all.

That is why the phrase, have the confidence of a mediocre white men exists.

Being stopped by the police and not being afraid that you will be killed or detained is privilege

Applying for a job and not worrying that your resume won't be picked because of your name is privilege

Entering a room and no one questioning your place in the room is privilege

Going to a conference and not being mistaken by the cleaning crew is privilege

Walking at night without fear of being raped or even murdered is privilege

Going into a sexual relationship and not worrying that you may not cum is privilege

The list goes on and on. We can choose not to call it that, it doesn't mean is not there

Sleep is crucial. The lack of it definitely screws up my romantic relationship with myself. There have been numerous times I had to wank before I could wink.

I don't have a good relationship with sleep and I have a variety of reasons for that.

I would prefer to have partnered sex before bed but in the absence of that I do masturbate before sleep but not every night. When I do I sleep really well, when I don't I don't sleep well.

I need to look at my brain chemistry a bit more. I'm probably deficient in something.

(I don’t know if this belongs here, so let me know if I should delete it)

Honey’s mention of brain chemistry above got me thinking about the connection between that and pleasure. I’ve been on antidepressants for awhile, and tried a few different ones before finding what worked, and I’ve definitely noticed they change my ability to cum. But not only that, they change what my orgasms are like. I’m very fortunate that what I’m on now actually make all of it better 😂 It’s a little easier to cum and not only are they stronger but I can have multiples, which I couldn’t when not on anything. 😁

I’m not sure what my point is, just that it surprised me that there was such a clear connection between neurotransmitters and orgasms.
Sorry if this is rambly, it’s very early!

Antidepressants killed both my sex drive and my ability to come, but it didn't kill my emotional need to feel like a fully functional sexual woman, or my need for the dopamine hit. Talk about a mind fuck. Once I came off the pills, I was briefly able to come twice in five minutes, but very small orgasms, and eventually my body readjusted back to one nice, big orgasm after about 15-20 minutes of self play. Phew!

The anti-depressants also killed my ability to get a good night's sleep, and unfortunately, that never righted itself after getting off the pills. I have no trouble falling or staying asleep, but the quality of my sleep is crap. My inner monologue, which almost never shuts up during the day already, is now on all night as well. It's like having a TV on in the background 24/7 and it's annoying af.

I think you just hit on something huge.

I've been on birth control since I was a teen and coming off it opened up a sexual desire in me I hadn't really experienced before. I was about 30 when I finally stopped using hormonal birth control for good. #neveragain

It actually blows my mind how many friends of mine believe their birth control killed their sex drive. I feel like my sexual twenties were wasted trying to avoid pregnancy instead of enjoying my body. If I could go back in time I would take myself off birth control and just have sex with myself instead of a man 👏

I also have had a few times in my life where I was taking antidepressants. I think the BC was messing with my sexual function more than the antidepressants were, but there was definitely a libido side effect to antidepressants, too. Zoloft was the fucking worst! Brain zaps instead of clit zaps. No thank you.

It makes sense that medication interferes with our abilities to come. It's all psychosomatic

I had a very bad experience with BC and yes, dear reader, I am going to share. Are you sitting comfortably?

I have mentioned I had a very restricted childhood. I decided that it was easier at an early age to "obey the law" as that is what was being thrown at me at all times. I didn't have a boyfriend until I was 16 and I didn't get put on BC until I was 18, so that the family doctor couldn't tell my mother. This means I didn't have sex until I was 18.

The family doctor was amazing and she put me on a brand that really, really helped me. She asked me about "other symptoms" during my periods and I was so angry to find out that my crippling pain, nausea and fainting episodes could have been alleviated much earlier if I was on BC.

Then I went to university and went to a different doctor. They put me on a different brand but "they're both the same" and my husband told me that overnight I changed completely. I was more irritable, more emotionally unstable and generally just a very awful shitty person.

I came off that BC and I haven't gone back on any. My sexual desire changed for the worse when I changed brands, but even the first BC must have supressed my desire as since coming off all BC my desire has tripled. Stress aside, I am very horny and sometimes I feel that "a slight breeze" may set it off 🤭

So I’m way behind, but yeah, when I’m sleeping solo, nothing beats slapping the sloth once or twice to go right to sleep.

I love sleeping. Nap time is a favorite, though elusive, mistress of mine.

Slapping the sloth?!

That is a new and hilarious one. I’m really laughing out loud 🤣
