Aang and Iroh take Xia to The Western Air Temple to try and a) get Aang back up to speed, top priority, and b) try to break Xia of her Earthbender-wannabe bad habits, less of a priority?

If that's good with you guys, I may be able to get that post out today or tomorrow.

So, uh, Katara and Ryota and Sokka are in a scouting group? Is that what we're on about?

Who else do we think is out scouting about, are they all teams of three?

Sounds good to me.

The only other people I can see as able to go on a scouting mission is Ty Lee and, maybe, Smellerbee. And maybe Appa would be used for covering more ground faster (depending on whether or not he's at the air temple). Everyone else, I think, would have important reasons for staying behind and holding the fort/preparing until a solid lead was found.

Although I think the scouting idea was originally brought up mostly as a way of writing out certain canon characters that weren't looking to return at the time. I'm fine with doing it, though, if you're interested. Largely for the reasons we talked about earlier on giving Ryota and Xia time apart.

But you know? This story is just so... grown-up and realistic in so many other respects that it seemed odd not to have that be a concern for her. Also, it's something I've panicked about a lot in my own life, when I was younger, so I was kind of... writing what I knew.

I'm not sure how the rules work, but I'm pretty sure Xia's existence signifies that the rules are changing to make sure the Avatar Cycle doesn't get broken. Spirits of Airbenders are migrating back to The World and being born in other Nations, of which Xia's maybe just the first to be discovered. (Maybe she's the only one born so far, I dunno.)

So Xia wouldn't necessarily have to be with Aang in order to do the whole, uh, "Adam and Eve" thing. Granted, the characters may not have an understanding of this and that might be a topic to awkwardly address in future, as the drama warrants. I'm just sayin', Ryota's got nothing to worry about on that front.

I think Aang's condition is two parts metaphysical and one part physical.

Probably maybe his Firebending is just kind of gone. That Azula has his Avatar-Level Firebending now? And his other Bending is diminished to normal Master levels, he's still good, he can still Bend three out of four, but he's only as good at it as a normal person would be, not like an Avatar should be.

And, like anyone who's missing a part of themselves would be, he's just kind of physically exhausted. Maybe suffering the symptoms of clinical depression. Trying to soldier through, sure, 'coz he's Aang, but... you know... debilitated.

I think he can use The Avatar State to commune with previous Avatars, ask their advice. But it doesn't juice up his mojo like it should oughta. Partial block.

Probably he's been trying to converse and shore up his inner resources while he can. And that's what he's doing in The Temple, just kind of... exploring everything that Guru Pathik had taught him.

I think he's just tired. But Aang being Aang, he's not going to let this beat him and he's still steeling himself to head out into the front lines at the drop of a headband.

Aang may well not be in any condition to deal with a fledgling right now.

Seriously, it's cool. If you did want to take a crack at it now, I'm sure you'd do brilliantly. You always have, in my experience.

But if you just want to have him patching up and what-have-you, "I'll deal with you later," I would totally not be offended.

(Funny story? Apparently Monk Gyatso was supposed to reincarnate as Momo? I guess they didn't include that in the story after all. Maybe that can be a talking point in reincarnation... at least she came back as a human, instead of a bug or a platypus-bear or something.)
