Avatars and the impressions we give

Role Playing

We adapt our behaviour according to our surroundings or audience.

Lou plays one role as Lou and another as Shock Chick. Why not?

She is a daughter, a wife, a mother and has different responses in each role.

I am a husband, a father, a writer of mildly erotic long-winded stories and a politician with a small 'p'. Each role has different attributes.

Our Avs may be a clue to ourselves about the role we play here.

Role? I'm more myself here than I am in any other venue. It's liberating -- and empowering -- and energizing -- and titillating.

I've no appearances to maintain here. I've no one that I absolutely must impress. I don't have to behave responsibly or refrain from embarrassing my family. I can just be ME.

Though the "clues" are often misleading and/or misinterpreted

How true. Some of the trolls, or people that have not taken the time to get to know me, even a little bit, mistake my AV's of myself as being that I'm advertising for cyber or whatever. This could not be farther from the truth. Another reason I pay more attention to the written words then the AV's.

Rhino if you are talking to me, you have not crossed that line, you were tastfully expresssing your thoughts about my AV's while responding to a completely seperate issue.:D

As a relative newcomer here I am finding this thread very interesting. I have only recently been able to post an AV - I chose this one for a variety of reasons but in no way expect it to represent myself or even my Lit persona. I am intrigued by others AVs - I get confused when people change them because yes they do help me to 'recognise' a poster but Im getting used to that now!

I warm to some posters immediately because of their AV and think Whoa! about others but those are just first immpressions - it is what they say that matters in the end.

The last couple of days on here have been a bit weird for me - the debates about misunderstandings and age have been really interesting in that in those debates real strength of feeling has come out and I feel that I am getting a real glimpse into some posters which I didnt have before which is also good.

We are all different and all make assumptions about one another using different criteria and thank goodness for that!

Nothing is real here; that is the horror of damnation.

"Real" is a slippery concept. We are undoubtedly playing roles, and self-devised ones, at that. Yet much of the real slips by the mask. How different is that from life in the wider world? Particularly when you move to a new place, particularly the younger you are, the more plastic your personality?

I think many of us are delighted, at the first of it in particular, to invent and play true to a role we don't see as ourselves. Perhaps because of the myriad temptations of the way this form of talk is structured. But even amicus is letting the mask slip.

And he lacks an av; his role was constructed without one.

Others come here, like SeaCat, for instance, or myself, more or less without anonymity. But even I have tried to make my cantdog a bit less base than my usual fallen self. On the other hand, I do the same at home, at work. No sense introducing yourself with a list of your sins.

Regulars here, remember, met each of us with no avatar, just at first. The stronger personalities here were fairly well pegged by those regulars before that hundredth post. I felt I had a clear enough first notion of Teenage Venus before the av.

But when a GB unit comes to visit, festooned all over with sigs and avs and little location mottos, I think you attempt to use it all to form a judgement. When I myself was new here, all of you were like that. You were Christmas trees bespattered with glittering ornaments, and I used them, perforce, to form an idea of you.

But visual cues are powerful. I think sometimes avs like Vincent E's or Mlle de la PlumeBleu's have a strong influence on the terms folks usae to reply to them, while a faceless breast is a total enigma.

Finally, I remind you that a goodly proportion of people view the board with those features turned off, and never see sigs or avatars.

I think everyone's AV gives others a small glimpse into their personalities. I change mine fairly often, but certain things normally stay the same, no matter which one I use. I change them according to my mood. Only a couple of them are really me, but that's okay too.

I like getting those glimpses. If you didn't like a picture, or photo, you wouldn't use it, so it does say something about the person, no matter how small that something is.

I think only one AV has every really turned my stomach, but that did not affect my opinion of that individual :)

Charley: Was that my JOZXYQK one? That was the av that I got huge negative feedback from.

I liked Gauche's old one. It got to the stage that I started thinking of Gollum as Gauche in my head and had to stop and think about which one I meant.

Same here!

I especially loved him in a bobble hat. :D

My faceless breast reveals a bit of me I normally keep well hidden, perhaps to encourage myself to be a bit more free with my thoughts.

Exactly.

Mat.

Lil' ol lady, with silver hair, who loves women (and, believe it or not, quite a few guys).
What you read, is what you get.
Apologies if its bland and unappetising, but I'm comfortable.

The reason behind my faceless breast is simple.......pride.
I'm proud of my breasts, they are REAL. In a day and age of so many fake hooters I take pride that mine are 100% natural.:D

Plus, I think it shows the side of me that says I'm fun and uninhibitated.

I think Earls' present Av is just lovely. (I'm assuming it's really him of course) I hadn't realized it before, but I guess I always had a mental image of him as a kind of young, in-bred nobleman based on his name. A gawky Prince Chalres comes to mind. This Av is much more appealing, and I couldn't even seeing disagreeing with him. Go into sales, Earl. You must have the most open and honest face in all of Lit.

I think Ogg is great too. There's earnestness and tradition there, but a great sense of humor too, not afraid to laugh at himself. Very appealing.

Perdita's presnt Av appeals to me too, the young Latina. That innocence and affectionate campiness is very warm and approachable.

God, I can't review them all. But I do have to mention Pure and Amicus, both of whom shun the graven image. It goes with the idea of their being thread raiders and somewhat insubstantial.

I have to mention Carl East too, even though he's not here to defend himself. I remember when he first started posting. He had a truly horrible story about being homeless and living a life of woe, but he accompanied this with a big, fat picture of his proudly displayed erect penis which made it impossible for me to take him seriously. It was like: "My life's a mess, I'm hanging on by a thread, and...oh, by the way, get a load of my schmeckel!"

If you want to be taken seriously, don't lead with your putz.

Thanks, Mab. Another needlepoint project for me.

Not sure if you really think it's him, but Earl's AV is a BritCom actor whose character is beloved by me and a few million females.

Unfortunately, Dr M, that isn't me in my av. Think I'll have to haul it down; too many people have made that mistake.

A gawky Prince Charles? I'm definitely not as cute as Richard Coyle (my av), but I'm definitely a step above Prince Charles. For those who can remember, my morphed Vampire av is the closest I've come to showing my face on here.

The Earl

Melty Man, please don't change the AV, or at least bring it back from time to time. He's very cute, but you are truly handsome, so don't matter if anyone thinks it's you.
