Helping Ukraine would have been not putting them on track to NATO membership - a Russian red line. Helping Ukraine would have been not interfering in their elections by removing from power a democratically elected president in a US sponsored regime change operation (Maidan coup). NATO on Russia's border has been a non-starter since the collapse of the Soviet Union when the West promised Russia that NATO would not advance one inch to the East. The lack of empathy is astounding to me.

Russia already has NATO members on its border -- Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Finland -- and it's just as safe and secure as it was before they joined.
