Biden's Legacy

e split the country into tribal adversarial factions, he was a disuniter not a uniter. He pit progressive democrats against conservative republicans every step of the way, touting that MAGA was a threat to democracy.
That wasn't Biden's doing!
And then there’s the lawfare and weaponization of the justice system. Total failure.
And that's just a lie.

Biden strengthened our alliances, got the biggest infrastructure/chips etc bills through despite everything, brought some semblance of normality back to the American Presidency... he has protected people where he could, and had many of his attempted protections (such as educational debt forgiveness) blocked or overturned by an aggressive court system. He has helped build a more diverse court system, brought down the price of certain drugs and named others to be targeted, and oversaw a soft landing for America's economy when headlines were all screaming about a collapse.
He did one hell of a lot with not much and should be remembered as a decent president despite being sandwiched between 2 trump terms.

I particularly admire his being able to push out 99% of the investing-in-America funds before trump could lay hands on them.

Joe Biden pushes out 99% of 'Investing in America' funds before Donald Trump's return

And President Biden made sure more of that money went to "Red States" than "Blue States", so it will be very difficult for President Musk (and DonOld, etc) to undo those investments.

👍

Daily Mail:

The Daily Mail (a.k.a. Hate Mail, Daily Fail, Daily Heil, Daily Moan, Crazy Mail, and so on) is a reactionary right-wing tabloid rag masquerading as a "traditional values" middle-class newspaper that is, in many ways, the second-worst of the British gutter press (only Rupert Murdoch's The Sun is worse). The Mail has been so consistently bad that Orwell called them out in Homage to Catalonia for supporting Franco.[1]:199,207 The Mail has also infamously supported Oswald Mosley and fascism.

The Daily Mail is to the UK what the New York Post is to the United States, and what the Drudge Report is to the Internet: to wit, gossipy tabloid "journalism" for those who cannot digest serious news, with a flippantly wingnut editorial stance. Like the Daily Express, it tries to appear more upmarket and respectable than the red-top British tabloids, though it does sometimes go in for the full front-page picture or headline characteristic of the populist rags. It is also notorious for its frequent harassmenthttps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5a/Wikipedia%27s_W.svg/12px-Wikipedia%27s_W.svg.png of individuals, campaigns of hate directed at various minorities (often people who are Muslim or transgender), and willfully deceiving and lying to its readers.

Much of its content is designed to trigger readers' limbic systems, so articles generate strong emotions of hate, fear, anger, sadness, disgust, and occasionally happiness (usually because a white middle-class person has done something nice, or kittens). Like trout in a fish farm pond, readers wait for the Daily Mail to fling the next story to them about ne'er-do-wells smirking, scruffy women in tracksuits smoking outside court (where they face charges of drunken assault or benefit fraud), brown people and assorted foreigners doing the things that they do, lefties campaigning about something, or working class people enjoying themselves in a non-approved way. Then the readership erupts into a foaming fury that quickly subsides as they wait for the next story. But the fury doesn't completely subside; it leaves a residual anger that simmers in the background and requires another trigger story to allow it to boil over once more.

I'm incredibly disappointed in Biden.

Once again, the man who told us all about the danger to democracy that exists in the upcoming administration has provided his successor with the ammunition to do whatever he wants and expects that we should blame 45/47 for it.

His legacy will include providing cover for the shit that we will get for the next guy. He has given him excuse after excuse and still believes his shit doesn't stink.

People who excuse this behavior are not worthy of response...fuck off.
Please elaborate. Not sure what you’re talking about here

Biden's preemptive pardon is unprecedented (Nixon is not the same thing)

And now 47 can preemptively pardon others just as he did and when people complain, he can point to Biden ..

Biden broke through norms.

That's how things work

Ah, yes lots of norm breaking has certainly been happening since trump first won the presidency. I don’t blame Biden for doing so. And I think trump would do it under his own circumstances whether Biden did it first or not.

What does sadden me is that we’re at this point.

There is no excuse for breaking the norms. People saying "well we needed to because Trump" are actually doing exactly what authoritarians do......they declare emergencies so that they can single handedly do stuff that is not acceptable.

It's wrong no matter who does it

Not saying I disagree because we’re now in a fucked up cycle, but for me it’s down the list from trump’s norm breaking, which isn’t over yet

Perhaps. The thread is about Biden's legacy, though.

Interesting article by Sarah Isgur. I found the last year and a half to be horrible and completely changed my opinion. His pardons were one of the most heinous abuses of power I've seen in my lifetime.

His “aww shucks,” doddering nature is effective, but Joe Biden’s legacy is not the Restorer of Norms. He is leaving office quietly having caused more damage to the rule of law than arguably any single one of his predecessors.
