I'm still stuck on thinking about empathy. LOL

I was thinking about my kids. I have been truly blessed with 3 awesome kids. My youngest son is the most like me. (We are even the only 2 left-handers in my entire family.) He's very sensitive and concerned with the feelings of others. Ever since my two sons were toddlers, they would rush to the aid of anyone who was hurt. I dealt with a lot of severe depression when they were young. It made me feel worse when they would focus on trying to make me feel better.

My daughter is, well, different. She has Asperger's (a mild form of autism). Ever since she was little, she was hypersensitive to touch, smell, and sound. Her startle reflex is still greatly exaggerated. However, she does not connect with people. She and I are very close, but she doesn't really have any friends. She views her peers as "kids." But, I began to wonder if maybe this is how she has learned to sheild herself. She and I isolate together. LOL We both tend to feel overwhelmed, nervous, and generally uncomfortable in public places. When she goes with me to my art shows, she is never more than inches from my side. I call her my shadow.

I have never dismissed my kids as being "oversensitive" like I was as a child. I feel a responsibility to understand empathy. Maybe then, they won't struggle with depression as much or as severely as I have. maybe?

*shell-shocked from catching up with all the activity*

Pardon me, I was staring at Dora's ( o )( o )

I think several of us must have been.

*grin*

I thought about injecting a few comments earlier, but decided against it. I don't feel competent to address issues of abuse. I was never a victim of physical or emotional abuse during my developmental years. Not to say I didn't get hurt, but I usually gave as well as I got. Usually better.

Enough said.

I didn't join this thread to discuss BDSM either, but if the topic presents, I won't shrink from it. Pretty much like you, Hom.

And Küchemeister, I want to reinforce Hom on this: being a victim doesn't make you a submissive.

Being a submissive can make you more vulnerable to becoming a victim, although it doesn't have to be that way. A lot of folks have trouble distinguishing between the two things, and I usually refer them to this for clarification.

Again, enough said.

History. I've not been abroad, so I can't say what I might feel on the beaches of Normandy. I have, however, visited many battlefields and fortifications here in the US, and felt, as you called it, the weight of history. It wasn't a negative thing for me, though. Maybe it was because I felt that them men who fought and died in those places, regardless of which side they fought for, did it for my benefit. I always seem to get an infusion of emotional energy as a gift from the ghosts of those fallen soldiers.

Maybe I'm some kind of psychic vampire? I dunno. Everybody is weird in their own way.

That's my girl!

And people say we are a self-effacing country.
LOL I was just thinking about one of those awful horror stories about demonic possession... Isn't one of the tormentors of one of the unsuspecting victims known to have said "I AM LEGION"? Or is that biblical? I must admit I'm a little confused...

edited to add: It is a quote out of Mark 5... There was a man and when Jesus asked his name, replied, "I am Legion for we are many." The demons were cast out into pigs.

I'm glad I cleared that up. I just knew it was a burning concern for you all. :p

I just know you write some pretty classy poetry

Oh my goodness I remember watching The Exorcist (well actually I saw a lot of the floor!) and I couldnt sleep with the light off for weeks

I'll just claim this one as my own, too...

I think, therefore, I am.

Who needs philosophers when you have MPD Canadians?

I am pink ... therefore I'm Spam

No one suspects that in twenty years we will rule the world.
bwahahahahaha <<< evil laugh.

Wait! Are we sure we want to rule a world who'd want us as rulers? ...

Again very fucked up is inadequate as a description (of both the world and MPD Canadians).

I prefer being required to occassionally grovel at the feet of your royalness, The Nymph and The Grand High Visier in charge of grovelling subjects.

Grovelling other than on your knees?

Once again I'm astounded by the level of enlightenment and kindness around here.

It's good for everyone to be conscious of the boundaries of others, and I think part of this whole dialogue was Chef also sharing his own story, as many of us have done.

Frankly, the talking/not talking about power and BDSM after this may be a non-issue anyway, since I believe mostly we've moved on to thoughts about empathy and sensitivity at this point (and of course looking at Dora's (@)(@). )

Homburg, Anschul, you are two extraordinary guys, and I do really think you understand each other more than you are feeling at the moment. It's all good - our various detailing of power play is done, and one thing I thought about last night (and may yet do) is open a little 'back room' thread for the higher squick-factor aspects of the discussion to continue. May do that this afternoon if I get time; I think there are still things that Hom and I and others might be able to talk through on the subject of anger, dominance and sensitivity. If others think that would be a valid thread, let me know.

I felt like there were some powerful things being explored, so I'm going to think about ways to continue to do that, gently and well.

But hey, people are trying to eat in here. Sometimes I forget that myself.

Really, it's all good, as far as I can see. And from what I can understand, our beloved Chef is going to be pretty busy for a few weeks so we may see a bit less of him anyway, sadly.

But I know how incredibly vulnerable one can get during a major transition like the one Anschul is making at the moment. I'm already noodling on how we can set up a little nourishment and support for him as he moves through this very hard journey and finds his new sense of home.

Lots to think about today, and once again I'm overwhelmed at what a high-quality group we have in here. Just blows me away, most days.

I'm around. Anybody need anything? The kitchen and bar are both open, as well as the confessional booth in the back.

Ooh Goody! Confessional booth!! I wonder how many confessions it takes to get bj squirmy!

From you, it wouldn't take too much. You make me squirmy before you say a single word. It only gets worse once you start talking.

Hm. I seem to be in a thread-starting mood today. Guess I've been hanging around the GB too much. Whaddya think about a confessional booth thread? People could step up to assign penance for each other.

I would have to say, it depends upon what you are measuring and how long said ruler is.

;)

I'd be confessing things from as far back as 1983...
Does anyone else constantly berate themselves for every little mistake they ever made?

There was actually talk at one point of the Kansas Connection getting together a pool to fly me out to Kansas for a weekend for a demo. I still think they need to get on this.

Are sbm's and Lit members mutually exclusive groups?
Have you ever met a sbm on Lit?

sbm? don't recognize the term.

Okay, Lady S, here's a question for you.

If I were to set up a confessional booth, and you confess, are given a penance and perform that penance, would you actually be able to stop berating yourself for those things in your past?

Confessions, penance and purification are artificial constructs, but they work really well for some folks, if we let them actually act as true cleansing rituals. I'm actually kinda serious about this. Whaddya think?

I vote for Ange to put up her back AV to match bj's. And anyone else that has one as well. I am entranced...
