The biggest reason - is also known as the Great Heartbreak of '74. As you may or may not know, the Oakland A's (sorry to switch gears to baseball, but it's related...trust me) won 3 straight World Series in 72, 73 and 74. I lived and died by these guys. They were MY team. Then Charlie Finley sold them. All of them. Jackson, Rudi, Campaneras, Hunter, Blue - all my guys were gone. And in their place, a bunch of guys I didn't know and didn't love. At the tender age of 12, my team was massacred (or so it seemed to me). And I found out that it wasn't about your home team....and your guys being your guys forever. It was about money, cash, dough-re-mi. And pro sports were not the same for me after that.

Mind you, I had it in my mind to play pro ball. In 5th grade, I met Larry Czonka (I wanted to be him) and Don Shula (whose eyes bugged out like a Volkswagen when I told him that I was still in elementary school - I was about 5'11 and a bit under 200 lbs at the time). That all went away, though...and I didn't even enjoy playing after that, nor did I go out for the team in high school.

Reason three, I suppose, is related to the other two (as Al Davis is, to me, the embodiment of evil as far as sports greed goes..... The city of Irwindale really couldn't afford to lose 5 million dollars to him in order to be a pawn in his Oakland/Los Angeles game.... What team is where these days? It all seems so...disposable and transitory. Move a city name here, get rid of a team name there, milk a few million from the taxpayers of a city for a new stadium (that they won't see a penny of return on), and voila! A new expansion team. The citizens of LA got so sick of the bullshit, they've given the NFL the finger for years (despite the urgings of a few city council members...who probably had their wallets fattened by developers, potential owners, et al). The money, the bullshit, the taxpayer and fans getting screwed....it just all leaves a bad taste in my mouth....that a shitload of beer can't wash away.....

I know that it's all politics and money...I know that now. But somewhere in me....a 12 year old kid's heart is still broken...and I don't know how to fix it.

So...instead of sports, I decided to be a sex nut. Problem is, it's been a solo sport for me lately.....

All very valid points you made Nigel. Well stated and point taken.

I'm not naive enough to think that pro sports doesnt concern itself more with the bottom line than with the enjoyment for the fans.

But..and this is the kicker for me I suppose...I enjoy watching from home cheering while attending games, and the enthusiasm that ensues...just for the fun of it.

I can do so without being jaded about it, because so many things in life are so much more important than how Al Davis gets his rocks off by screwing people over or how he manipulates pro football.

So, I watch, I cheer, I buy... and I love it...it's a game.

Rock on, EJ - I don't begrudge you your enjoyment of the game. Were I to see you cheering your team on, I'd say "Hey...that little cutie is certainly enthusiastic..."

But I can't think of Al Davis without....<shudder> And I can't think of the Raiders without thinking of Al Davis. It's a vicious cycle.

I think it would have been less traumatic for me if it had been explained to me gently, rather than having my team decimated....dunno why I haven't been able to just get over it....
