Hi RH, AFM, Gusty, Hong, erc, buggawugga, Sexy Wench, and Dragon Tamer,

I don't know anyone who knows anyone who has had Sars either, but the illness is being taken very seriously here, thank goodness. The latest story is that the wholesale vegetable market in Pasir Panjang had to shut down for 10 days because at least 4 cases of Sars have been traced there. There were NO vegetables in the grocery store this afternoon. How vegetarians are coping, and how vegetarian restaurants are getting by, I have NO idea.

On another thread, someone mentioned that more people die of the flu than of Sars. Their point was that the Sars scare is overblown, hyped up by the media. That may be partially true...but of more immediate concern is the fact that Sars is an unknown in too many ways.

Viruses are so intelligent, adaptable, and resilient. :-(

Mia

I'm in Nottinghamshire, England but my cousin's son is in hospital with Sars in Queen Elizabeth hospital in Hong Kong. Over here steps are being quietly taken in the event of an influx of cases. As you say, Mia, the virus is constantly mutating but the chances of dying from it at present are lottery odds.:rose:

hmmm..... where are all my asians tonight? gone to bed or out for dinner? out socializing with people instead of text?

the world seems so quiet tonight... makes me want to just break out of this place running... never stop and never look back... leave it all behind and into the night... never be afraid again with the faith instilled by perpetually guiding starlight... no mornings, no tomorrows. only now. to be alone, in love, afraid, but only for this moment... seeking, ever seeking for that moment when i can stop running and begin to live my life again... and not be afraid to look ahead. or behind......

*sigh* hello?.......................................

Hi all,
Wish you all have a great day. Went out to a baseball game yesterday.... and it was far colder than I expected. The temp was about 45 F in the afternoon (or about 7 C) and very windy. Froze my legs out in the seat and now my knees are still in pain.... hopefully after a full night sleep it would be better.

Mia, you mentioned about Pasir Panjang, is it in Singapore or Malaysia? That is a Malay word ( trans. Long Sand).

Hi buggawugga, wish your exam is doing well. I am still here... are you there?

Hello Asian Threadies,

erc, I've been to baseball games like that in early spring. When the wind factor affected the pitching and batting, and also froze my ears off! I hope you get the cold out of your legs. Ouch :( The Pasir Panjang vegetable market is in Singapore. Thanks for the translation! Is pasir the word for long? There is another area called Pasir Ris. What does *that* mean?

Hello fleur/His Flower. Does this mean you belong to someone here at Lit now? Hope to see you on the thread again.

Hi Gusty Patootie :) I'm right behind you in line for some of bugga's congee. (Juk is Cantonese?)

Sweet buggawugga, I hope you feel better soon. When seasons change, our immune systems are challenged. Your last post was a little melancholy.

starkpic, I hope your nephew (cousin's son=nephew in the Philippines, not sure what you'd call that relationship in England) gets well very soon. Of the 321 people from the Amoy Garden complex who came down with Sars, I hear that 14 died. The other side of that coin is that 307 are still living. Those odds are comforting.

We hang by our fingertips on statistics.

hong, if only I could fathom the mysterious world of Chinese herbs!

MM, back to the game boards

Hello Mercy Mia. It is a bit quiet around here tonight. How are you doing this evening?

Hello Dragon Tamer,

I'm fine, thank you...but it's the middle of my afternoon. Yes, the boards are docile tonight.

And how are you?

Mia

I did forget the difference in time. I could do with less physical pain, but other than that I am well and just visiting some of the different threads. Anything interesting happening in your neck of the woods? Funny I should say that since there aren't any forests really in this state. The State Tree is the Telephone Pole. :D

:(

I'm sorry to hear about the physical pain, Dragon T. You maintain your sense of humor, though. The telephone pole is the state tree and your location is the cold North. Hmmm...*thinking*...

Where is that? MN? SD? ND? WI?

Hey all...I take one night off and there's more than two pages greeting me on my return!

Cough has almost gone now, thanks to the lovely chinese medicine :) I think I started taking it early so it didn't have a chance to develop into anything worse.

Something that made me think.....why the hell is juk called congee in english?

Jeuk, Zhou (mandarin pronounced Joe), Xi Fan (taiwan pronounced Hsi Fan - washed rice), Porridge, hmmm.. good question..

stealing Gusty's dictionary... wow.. this one is interesting....

Websters College dictionary has a totally different meaning 1. to takes one's leave 2. to bow ceremoniously

as does dictionary.com

Congee

oh wait a minute... it comes from India.. from Tamil

"congee

\Con*gee"\, n. 1. [Tamil ka?shi boilings.] Boiled rice; rice gruel. [India]

2. A jail; a lockup. [India]

Congee discharges, rice water discharges. --Dunglison.

Congee water, water in which rice has been boiled."

and there is your answer.. that was fun ...

better go now.... the lions are roaring....

{color=red] What's the name of that medicine? [/color]

I thought congee was Mandarin?

edited to add: Oh, just read hong's study on the derivation of congee...ahhh, we have an etymologist in da hizzouse!

Hello everyone--just checking in. No SARS fear here in DC, although I heard on the news that some woman in New York went to the hospital b/c her Vietnamese hairdresser coughed on her....as you say, it's the panic and ignorance that will kill us more than the disease!

In other news...well, actually, I don't have any other news!

Roman

cooongeeeeeeeee so tasty!
had to call my momma for some secret family recipes too and cooked up a storm... mmm mmm good eatin'! lol

Hi piglet cute name!

I lived in HK for a while and have visited a couple of times in the last 5 years or so. Where are you? Guess I should read your profile. :)

Welcome to Lit and to the Asian palace!

Hey buggawugga girl, you sound like you're in good spirits!

ahhhh memories of seeing a movie at Pacific Place and walking into Wanchai afterwards for some Pei Dan Sow Yuk Juk with a hefty sprinkling of white pepper on top and a Yo Za Gwai for dipping...... hmmmmmm... but a Keng Zai Juk with the peanuts and squid was always great too..... and a Hum Jim Beng... now I really am starving..... and blame the gruel loving Brits for the congee word...

and piglet is a very cute name... MM.... but the profile reveals nada....

That's right, hong.

PIGLET! Come back and tell us more about yourself. Do you compare to Winnie the Pooh's friend? Piglet is the quiet and supportive one, not like Tigger who bounces all over the place, or Eeyore, who has a hard time thinking logically. PIGLET!!!

I don't understand any Cantonese, but hong, you made me hungry. :(

well I was first referring to 10,000 year egg and pork congee...accompanied by a fried crueller?.... you know that deep fried bread stick thingy.... and the 2nd one is actually Teng Zai Juk...not "keng" (gusty corrected me)...and it means mixed up congee, usually seafood with peanuts.....and the last one is two fried cruellers stuck together with a resulting vagina shape (hey this is literotica after all) with sugar between..... mmmm hadn't thought about it that way before :p

you take a you za kwei (crueller stick) and put it with a hum jim beng (pussy bread with sweetness inside) and what do you get? diuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu :D (i hope you at least know that one)

Answer to above question: you get many baby cruellerettes!

I just call those things Chinese donuts :)

I love congee...but without eggs or peanuts. My favorite kind is with seafood or pork bits. Our version of congee in the Philippines involves garlic and ginger, chives and chicken. Arroz caldo. A true comfort food when one is sick in bed with the flu. And no wonder--the garlic and ginger steaming up at you will clear up your sinuses and load you with anti-bacterial goodness.

Er, all this food has made me hungry--can we talk about sex now?

walla problemmo maam.... ok here is a fun one for this thread...

language exchange :D

what are the more enduring less techical words for penis, boobs and pussy in Tagalog/Pilipino or whatever PI dialect you use? I want the cuter ones if possible....

for instance in our mixed up household.... my Willy is called by his mandarin name...Lao Er (old #2) and Mrs. Hong's pussy is called a Hum Hum (no, not because it makes me hummmm:eek:), which is Fukienese (no, not Fuckingnese) for Clam Clam.... and a little boy's pee pee is called a Gee Gee (chick chick as in chicken - makes you wonder the next time a guy is drooling over a hot Chick  ) and boobies are called Bao Bao (Buns, as in Char Siew Bao)...

Ok I went first... whose next??

I only just saw starkpic's post, and I just wanted to hope his nephew well. He'll be fine :)

Bit of trvial, Yao Za Gwai is also a substitute in the old days for Emporer's bones....since there was a time when they people hated the emporer so much that they wanted to fry him in hot oil :D

Thanks for the info Hong! Still sounds really stupid callin it congee though....

So what's everyone's favourite way of doing it? I normally boil some bones with it(roast duck is the best if you can get it!),ginger, add some sesame oil, salt and pepper....yum! In malaysia there's a stock called "Ikan Bilis stock", which is a fish stock, and if I have any of that I always add it, cos it's super tasty :)
Plus I normally make my own salted eggs for some extra flavour.

ahahaha that one made me laugh out loud this morning

my absolutely favourite is pay dan sow yuk juk although explaining the thousand year old preserved duck eggs to someone who's never had it before can be tricky... ("yes, they're supposed to be mouldy. no, they're not really a thousand years old. no, i don't know why they call them that then!")

yeah MercyMia, give us some tagalog words! uutin? i thought that meant penis... hey MM: ma hal ki ta!
