the thing about typing out chinese words into roman text is that an important part of the language, other than pronunciation, is the intonation, which is not easy to get across in text. English is extremely NOT tonal... so whenever somebody asks me "hey, how do you say .... in chinese?" and i tell them, it never surprises me that they hear the sounds but not the tones, even if i point it out to them. and there are some sounds that are very difficult for non-chinese speakers to get... such as the ng sound in "ngo" (as in "I")

I still remember when my younger brother had a roomate in boarding school named Ping Ng.... and he was so flustered as he figured he would never be able to pronounce the guy's surname.
