Calling all Asians

the thing about typing out chinese words into roman text is that an important part of the language, other than pronunciation, is the intonation, which is not easy to get across in text. English is extremely NOT tonal... so whenever somebody asks me "hey, how do you say .... in chinese?" and i tell them, it never surprises me that they hear the sounds but not the tones, even if i point it out to them. and there are some sounds that are very difficult for non-chinese speakers to get... such as the ng sound in "ngo" (as in "I")

ahahaha that one made me laugh out loud this morning

my absolutely favourite is pay dan sow yuk juk although explaining the thousand year old preserved duck eggs to someone who's never had it before can be tricky... ("yes, they're supposed to be mouldy. no, they're not really a thousand years old. no, i don't know why they call them that then!")

yeah MercyMia, give us some tagalog words! uutin? i thought that meant penis... hey MM: ma hal ki ta!

am glad you like that one Bugga..... and they are super tasty especially in a shanghai dish called Pi Dan Dou Fu... whatchamacallit eggs with a soft cold tofu in a sesame oil sauce with lots of goodies....

and yeah... Ngo isn't easy for gweilos .... took me a while:D I still remember when my younger brother had a roomate in boarding school named Ping Ng.... and he was so flustered as he figured he would never be able to pronounce the guy's surname.

and Mandarin is so much easier to romanize... especially when you have the 4 tone marks (as opposed to 8 to 10 for Cantonese  )

Yikes! What did I start?

bugga, hong...(AFM, I note, stayed safely out of this topic)

for the sake of international relations, I will share my meager knowledge of Tagalog sex words. Heh heh heh!

bugga, yes, it's utin (ooh tin) for a penis. That's one slang term. Another is titi, probably derived from ooh tin. There is a hard stop at end of the second syllable. And a woman's genitalia is called pek pek, probably derived from another street term, puki (poo kee). (Funny how similar the lingual patterns are across cultures--repetitions of one-syllable sounds to allude to genitalia in a diminutive fashion!) The formal term for genitalia is genderless: pag-aari or loosely, property. Euphemism abounds around the subject of sex and sexuality. Meaning can be more accurately conveyed face to face. Conversations can take place using the word "kwan" combined with various facial expressions, intonations and hand gestures. Kwan means thingamajig. "Halika dito, hahalikan ko ang kwan mo," can be a seductive invitation "Come here, I will kiss your thingamajig."

Breasts are refered to as susu, also a Malay term for milk. I don't know of any euphemistic slang words for breasts, unlike in English where new terms are constantly being manufactured. Seems there is still a high regard for breasts as the source of nourishment in the Philippines.

Womanhood and motherhood are still given great respect, even if only through lip service. The greatest insult still involves one's mother being a puta (Spanish word for whore).

I think that's about the extent of my knowledge there. :)

AFM, I use ikan bilis stock all the time. Nice variety from the typical chicken and beef stock. Do you like belachan?

Oh my...... this is a lot to absorb.....

so if I wander into a Pilipino Chinese gay bar in Makati.....

and say where are all the gee's (chicks/whores) and titi's (tities)....

the guys will all drop trow and start waving them at me??

gee/ji.... chick/chicken is also chinese slang for puta,, but the weirdest one is that the slang word for gigolos is ya zi which is duck  go figure..

hubby, I am going to the pasar and check out the ducks - hehe

btw..... Gusty and I love good balachan.... yum yum

Not sure what that is?

Since we're talking slang here, lets have some cantonese slang :D

"Bun zao" is a cantonese slang for penis. "Chun doi" is testicles, "Lin lin" is an extrememly rude word for breasts! We also use "Ball" pronouned hong kong style, as another slang for breasts. There's more but I'm kinda tired and can't remember them at the moment!

According to my sis, its 8 in cantonese, but two of them are the same, so it's six direct pronounciations. The other two only apply when using language in a certain context. Bloody hard eh?

Hey folks,
How is everybody doing ? Haven't been on this board for awhile now.
Mia, Panjang is long , and pasir is sand. Pasir Ris means Ris Sand.... not sure is Ris has any special meaning.

Seems like everybody is trying to pronounce the sexual organ, let me give me my 2 cents here. In Malay, puki (poo kee) is the derogatory term for female genital. Not every dictionary has that word. So far, only one (the Kamus Dewan, the most complete Malay dictionary has that word. Yes, when we were in high school, we DID look for those words in dictionary).
For Hokkien (Fukienese) or Taiwanese, the male genitial is called lan jiao (exactly the same pronunciation as blue bird). Back in the 80s Nissan had a car called Nissan Blue Bird and it never sold well in Malaysia or Taiwan... who wants to be called "hey he drove a penis car". :)

hong, chicken (gai) in cantonese usually means female prostitute, so the duck was being considered as the gigolo.

This is fascinating thanks all.... erc.... you were too polite to also mention the Hokkien/Taiwanese - Chi Bai - for female genitalia... ok a few more.... In Cantonese slang gay men is "See Fat Lo" asshole men....masturbation is "Da Fei Gei", beating the airplane. Masturbation in Mandarin is
'Zi Wei" (taking care of yourself) and it is funny that a popular punk rock band here calls themselves that...

the term chicken applies equally to Mandarin and Cantonese prostitutes although I am not sure of duck for Cantonese.... prostitutes were also traditionally called flowers "hua". Oh and Mantou (a type of bun or bao) is another slang word for breasts.

I love mixing up dialects and languages..... erc would call that speaking rojak (mixed vegetable salad - malay).... which is definitely bagus! (good) but I just get a kick out of the thought of poking a puki (I hope that wasn't too rude  )

hey but guys you better protect your Chun Doi if you ever see Ah Gwa (transvestite) crossing the street....

I can confirm "Ap" (duck) as a term for gigolo!

Tranvestites are also know as "Lam yan por", and "Yan yiu". Not sure the direct meaning of the second one!

Cantonese is the biggest slang language I've encountered though. For example, take this string of numbers, 5354, 769394
Prounounce it differently and it has a totally different meaning!

dredging memory for Cantonese numbers

m sam m sey (k, what does *that* mean?)

chut lop gao sam gao sey (and what does *that* mean?)

Hi AFM :)

Hey everyone--my background is in rudimentary Japanese, but if anyone's interested, I'll try to dig up some raunchy slang terms in case you ever have reason to use them...of course, the Japanese being as they are, many terms are actually Japanized (if that's a word?) pronunciations of English terms!

Knee surgery? But weren't you cooking a feast for Easter?

Dang, AA, and there I was on the ABC game thread undoing your zipper ;)

I hope the knee is healing nicely. What happened? A hockey game injury (isn't that implied in your AV?)?

LOL MM No, it was something uninspiring (although on the same knee that I hurt twice during my football playing days.) Walked out of a seminar, slipped on a patch of ice and snapped a ligament in that knee. I am back to 100% now...and two months ahead of their 'schedule'. I love hockey, but couldn't skate if my life depended on it! LMAO

Hurry up and explain the Canto numbers thingie, AFM!

Have been taking a bit of a Lit break... but no-one has guessed this before huh?? 9394 is fuck around... 76 is going outside or around... so 769394 is going out and fucking around.... 5354 is not moral.... so.... could it be.... immorally going out and fucking around?.... hmmmm...
