Hi Hong,

Well, sheesh...all that zipped right over my head. But figure the honorary ang mo on the thread pops in with the first (and probably correct) guess on AFM's number riddles.

:)

P.S. I hope ang mo is not a derogatory term the way gweilo is supposed to be.

sshhhh, I had a little help ;)

they are all somewhat derogatory and that is why I love using them to describe myself... though I used to joke in Hokkien that I am Gobi mo gwei (coffee/brown hair devil)... not Ang mo gwei (red hair devil) :D

but here in Beijing they just refer to us as Lao Wai (old outside/foreigner)... rather than Yang gui zi (devils from over the ocean)....

Have been taking a bit of a Lit break... but no-one has guessed this before huh?? 9394 is fuck around... 76 is going outside or around... so 769394 is going out and fucking around.... 5354 is not moral.... so.... could it be.... immorally going out and fucking around?.... hmmmm...

Nice try :D

Well I might as well make things a little clearer.....5354, mm sam mm say, try a different pronounciation of mm sam, mm si, which basically means "got problem with my business?"

Then 76 is going out, as hong correctly said, and gow sam gow say can be though differently as sorting out that problem is a untoward fashion, so that would be "come out and we'll sort it out man to man"(implying violence)

I love Hong Kong slang, they really push understanding of cantonese to the limits sometimes!

Hi AFM

I believe they're all out um getting hard so they can answer my poll on penis sizes :)

How's work going, my man?

Work is boring....

And my cough has come back again.....really bad today, think I'm going to go to the doctor's this afternoon :(

I hope the boring job pays really well though.

Sorry to hear about that cough. :(
Take care of yourself or I'll have to fly over there and spank you or something.

Naw, I'm a good nurturer. I was kidding--it's a standing joke in my family. "If you get hit by a truck and die, I'll kill you!"

Coughs are bad, though, AFM. The sooner you can get rid of the cough the better. They strain your lungs and lower your general strength and immunity.

Are you at work right now? It's noon there, right?

I'm not at work until 5 today...

I'm definitely going to try and get an appointment at the doctor's though.....had ongoing throat and lung problems since January now :(

Aiyoh!

Dr. Mia prescribes summer ocean breezes to fortify those lungs. And lots of juk with grated ginger on top.

Since January? Tsk tsk tsk.

You're not a smoker, are you?

Part time smoker.....I've actually set a quite date in two weeks time (my birthday), but I haven't smoked for about a week now anyway, because of this coughing thing...grrr

AFM, my theory: some people just don't have it to be smokers. When I was in college, I was enamored with the image of smoking so I used to sneak-smoke (just not in front of my parents). But I'd always come down with a terrible cough that would last for months. So I stopped smoking for years. Took it up again 4 years ago...this time sneak-smoking when my son wasn't around. (Sheesh!) But again, the cough that lasted for months. So I gave up. At least for now.

And that's the truth!

Well i've decided to give up smoking altogether now, two weeks early of my set date. It's too damaging to health and can get pretty anti-social as well.

It's a fact that a lot of Asians smoke....what is the reason for this?

Hi AFM,

What happened? Did we scare everyone away?

I agree that a lot of Asians smoke. Perhaps the health issues have not been highlighted enough. In the early 90s (I think, can't remember the exact year now) when airlines started cutting back on smoking sections in the planes, I was on a flight from Tokyo, one row ahead of the smoking section. It was a joke because in reality, I was IN the smoking section. After lunch had been served and cleared away, several Japanese men lit up in the non-smoking rows. The flight attendants (all Asian and young females) came out and politely asked each of the men to put out their ciggies. The flight attendants were ignored. The top flight attendant came out and asked the smokers in the non smoking section to put out their ciggies. Still no success. It was all done the Asian way, very low key, but you could feel the tension and resentment from the older smokers who felt entitled by their age and possibly social position, to ignore the young flight attendants.

Things are a lot better nowadays with no smoking on flights. I feel sorry for the smokers on the 12-13 hours flights. It must be hell on top of the general discomfort in air travel these days.

What's happened to RH, buggawugga, SexyWench, HisFlower, erc, hong, gusty, alwaysawake, papillion, MTILC...and the other Asian threadies? :(

Actually the Japanese have the highest percentage of smokers, but also the lowest rates of lung cancer and longest life expectancy. Just goes to show how beneficial a healthy diet can be.

They smoke some super strength cigs out in asia as well......I remember coming from England with me poxy 0.6mg tar fags, while the norm there is like 1.5mg! Sure was a culture shock!

Where the bloody hell is everyone?

Hello,
Haven't been on the board for quite awhile now? How is everybody doing? Been going out for quite awhile, golf and biking mostly, and I just got too tired to get online for this week. Now both my arms are all sore. They have tennis arms, do they have golf arms? lol

Hello all
Born in Canada but still asian.

I agree that a lot of asians do smoke, I just wonder how did they start. I don't smoke. They sure smoke a lot.

Hey, AFM, your "bloody hell" line worked! ;)

Hi erc, it's good to see you post again. So you chose golf over US? (sob, sniffle) Th-that's nice. (just kidding!)

Welcome to the thread, SonTzu. I'm going to guess that you're of Chinese extraction? Tell us more about yourself.

My grandpas are on another mountain now, Gusty. What about yours?

Sorry to have been absent for a while.... wish I could say it was healthy outdoor stuff like erc... but was more playing DiabloII (a game) instead of posting...,

Being a heavy smoker, I am very pleased to live in China where there has to be the highest percentage of smokers anywhere. Japan has a low smoking death rate cause people don't feel guilty about smoking... it's the guilt that stresses people and causes sickness... in fact China is a great refuge for those of us who are politically incorrect..... though they have banned smoking in many office buildings which is cool as smokers end up meeting more folks from other walks of life by hanging out in stairwells and such.

and MM, I just sleep on the long flights... only way to get through it.

Welcome to Lit and this thread SonTzu, you name is spelled sort of like Sun tsu, as in the Art of War (Bing Fa).

Good luck with quitting AFM..

hi MM and AFM, and everyone else of course!
i'm still around, i've been taking a bit of a lit break too... but not for biking or golfing or even video games....
even less exciting- studying + illness = one stressed out buggawugga. tomorrow it will all be over and i will be happy again but until then...

waaaaaaaaahh!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that's me crying.

waahwahhwahhhhhhhh!

aiyah.

Hey guys,
Nice to see you again. Hong, I didn't spend all my time outdoor as well, it has been raining for the last few days here. Besides golf, I was playing SimGolf too lol. Besides that, I spent hours on civilization III too. I must had spent at least 4-5 months of my life playing the civilization 1-3 games since 1994.

Bugga, I wish you would feel better soon. Exam would be over soon...

I am a non smoker and always can't tolerate the smell. I am at the opposite side from hongluobo :). So this country (US) has been like god sent for me. The problem is when I went back to Asia, especially to China or Malaysia, I was constantly coughing and having chest pain when I smelt the cigarettes smell, worse... both my dad and my brother are heavy somkers.
SonTzu, welcome here. One way you start to smoke is just like how teeangers start to do drugs, or drinking or wearing strange clothes..... it is called peer pressure. You are not a man (or woman) if you don't smoke. You try to blend in and pick up the smokes, and once you are hooked, you are hooked for life. Like you said, most Asians do smoke a lot.

Hey buggawugga, sorry to hear you've been through a lot of grief. But who have you been kissing, huh? AFM has a bad cough, too... ;) (gasp!)

Hi erc, is it getting warmer in Chicago?

I wanted to ask my fellow threadies if there are phrases in your other language that don't translate well into English but communicate a really deep or cool concept?

One phrase in Tagalog that translates well is
"Sala sa init, sala sa lamig."
The English version is
"Damned if you do, damned if you don't."

A phrase that doesn't translate well is
"Nag-tetengang kawali."
Literally, it means "Having the ears of a wok."
But it means "pretending not to hear" and usually applies to hints for money or help or some other favor.

Have a good Monday, everyone!
