well, i'm about to give up on this and head to chinatown on the suggestion of AFM... but what I'm looking for is something or someone that will paint the characters into calligraphy form.. ie brush strokes... i think chinatown may be my only option. how disappointing... the internet DOESN'T do everything

Hi Bugga, the software I use is the NJstar chinese word processor. It can be downloaded for free trial here

The first word is is pronounced "tang" and the second word is "yi" I believe... you have to use mandarine pronunciations for that. Neither is really unusual and I think you can type in it.

I think there are always people who can help you to write in the caligraphy in chinatown.

hong: REALLY?!?! i didn't know that, that is really cool. calligraphy, even western, seems like such a lost art form these days. i have a bit of an interest in penmanship and have a collection of fountain pens. I love the feel of ink on paper and have zillions of note books just filled with writing for the sake of writing...

Hi, I am the one who is always having trouble with hand writing either English or Chinese. The homework I always scared most was the chinese caligraphy lol. I was happy when I could get more than 5/10
It is really a dying art.... especially nowadays you can get the computer to write for you in anyway. The chinese calligraphy is still not as threaterned by the computers because it is more difficult to be created, and computers are still not as popular in Eastern society comparing to Europe or US.

Here's my result:

Seventh Level of Hell

Guarded by the Minotaur, who snarls in fury, and encircled within the river Phlegethon, filled with boiling blood, is the Seventh Level of Hell. The violent, the assasins, the tyrants, and the war-mongers lament their pitiless mischiefs in the river, while centaurs armed with bows and arrows shoot those who try to escape their punishment. The stench here is overpowering. This level is also home to the wood of the suicides- stunted and gnarled trees with twisting branches and poisoned fruit. At the time of final judgement, their bodies will hang from their branches. In those branches the Harpies, foul birdlike creatures with human faces, make their nests. Beyond the wood is scorching sand where those who committed violence against God and nature are showered with flakes of fire that rain down against their naked bodies. Blasphemers and sodomites writhe in pain, their tongues more loosed to lamentation, and out of their eyes gushes forth their woe. Usurers, who followed neither nature nor art, also share company in the Seventh Level.

prior to Lit, Gusty spent hours and hours doing calligraphy and painting as well as studying Buddhist sutras. I have attached a sample of her calligraphy. It is a sutra, and unfortunately was done in red ink and therefore doesn't photograph very clearly.

I have also attached some links to some photographs of her paintings.. she has posted some of these here and there on Lit.

Welcome here. Nice to have someone close to me.

Hong, I agree that computer is definitely catching up in China. Although it still doesn't really reach the level of what it has been here. Last year when I went to China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, I see most offices (besides multinational) still use the paper for most administration functions. The same can be said for the government functions. Most of us still need paper forms. The only exception I had seen are in Singapore and maybe Hong Kong.
I believe eventually the whole world would probably make the computer as the center of their lives. And hopefully human would not lose our skills as computers start to take over our lives (sounds like terminator movie story).

i am generally of the belief that art can only truly be appreciated by the artist who created it (owing to the whole art/life interaction argument). but for someone who doesn't have any artistic inclination what so ever, i gain a sort of outside appreciation for good art because it is something that i realize that i probably would never excel at, no matter how hard i try...

and i wish i could read enough chinese to understand what is written on the gusty sutra!

Ho yau? I haven't tasted it for quite awhile now.... got scared after it had been found that oyster sauce could cause cancer.....
but it tastes so good, I just gonna try it some day.

I can see gusty is really interested in buddhism... all of her paintings and her caligraphy is buddhism related. By the way, the paintings and the caligraphy are both great. hope you can show more for us.

Oyster sauce causes cancer? Well so does Soy sauce but you have to drink like a litre of it a day or something ridiculous like that. I think that's a bit of an over-reaction erc, since pretty much anything can cause cancer nowadays
