Comments That Make Your Day

Yeah, I guess so. Got two comments at the same time on another story this morning. Wonder how long they were held in moderation.
Right now, it takes 2–3 days for anyone who isn’t a top commenter. It’s incredibly frustrating, especially since other people’s comments go through immediately. And becoming a top commenter is all about the quantity of comments. I could also boost my numbers by throwing out dozens of useless “Liked it” or "Bored"-type comments, but I have more respect for myself and the writer than that. So maybe in a few years, I’ll be able to comment instabtly too.

Yeah, it'd be nice to be on that whitelist, however that works. I wouldn't mind getting instant comments from you, your comments are always really nice and thoughtful and a joy to read when they show up 😁

Conventional wisdom is it occurs when you've submitted one 80-100 comments. I got whitelisted a few months ago at roughly 80 comments, but I've heard of other people taking 100.

just make a point to leave a comment in at least every other story you read, and it will come sooner than you think. that's what I did and a week later, I was whitelisted. now I lord around, giving everyone my opinion about everything. before that, I used to be so shy...

AH_User 1: [whispered] what's the scuttlebutt mate?
AH_User 2: [raspy, intense] heard 80
AH_User 3: [heavy pirate accent] boys uptown sayin' 100
AH_User 2: [raspy, angry] think they hear it from the bosses?
AH_User 1: [looks around, nervous] shhh. no way. nobody ain't seen them in years.
AH_User 3: [heavy pirate accent] lets settle it at 90 then, til we hear other, good luck

[group disperses into the shadows]

Oooooooh boy! I've started corrupting @AG31 into checking out non-human! Few things in life I enjoy more than prompting people to be at least curious about non-human erotica! 😁

From Trick and Trick
“I came here out of curiosity about non-human eroticism. I didn't expect to be aroused. I approached as I would any mainstream fiction. I wasn't surprised to be immediately engaged. The writing is very engaging. But I should have read the category. It's about demons. I wasn't curious about demons. I'll go look for another.I gave it five stars because I can tell that it did very well what it set out to do.”

Sometimes an older story sits without a comment until it’s dusty. But I was very pleased to find this cogent and appreciative comment made about my one and only attempt at writing a story in a genre I have no experience with, as noted below. Foolishly, some years back, I set a personal goal of writing a story in each of Lit’s categories. I gave it my best and haven’t achieved that goal, but in this category, this comment is a testament to a measure of success.

Bobby's Metamorphosis, Love's Spark
“Very well done. I kept wondering when the transgender part would enter. Might this be mislabeled when it should be in gay or bisexual? Then Bobbi appeared at the very end. The siblings did a wonderful job opening his/her eyes to a world of possibilities. I understand that this was your first foray into this genre. My guess is you aren't very familiar and didn't want to make an ass of yourself with foolish scenarios. As a transgender woman, I fully appreciate it.”

Not true. I'm a trusted commenter - my comments post immediately - but I don't often comment on stories. I'm also a writer - the "trust" from the site must come from a combination of things.

I don't think that's how it works. Sure, you need to establish a track record, but it can't only be based on the number of comments you post. In my case, I reckon it was time, and not posting scurrilous comments.

It is true. You have 419 comments, that's what makes you "top" in @Ianus4's sense, i.e., a trusted commenter. You don't have to continue leaving a lot of comments, you may even stop commenting altogether: all that matters is that you have left a certain (100-ish) number of comments in the past, and that is what had granted you the 'trusted commenter' status.

In my case, I reckon it was time, and not posting scurrilous comments.
It's not about time. My account is several years old and I've been actively leaving comments on some stories for about two years. But I still only have left 50 comments total, so my comments continue to be moderated.

Maybe it was a hundred comment threshold, way back when - I must have passed the threshold years ago.

If you're only leaving one comment every two weeks, that's not what I'd call "actively leaving comments," that's what I'd call "occasional and sporadic."

I don't consider myself a frequent commenter, certainly not these days. But you're right, there's a threshold you've got to meet.

I believe I always respond respectfully and politely. However, on LW, I see numerous "one-word" top commenters pop up immediately after a story is posted. In my opinion, quality isn't even a factor here.

"Quality" of comments has zero to do with Comments moderation - which only looks at html and spam links.

I wouldn't use LW as a baseline for comments behaviour either. It's a singular category, not representative of the rest of Lit.

I don't understand this discussion. Don't all comments show up immediately?

Nope, comments are moderated by default. That's why there's usually a surge of comments all getting posted within a few minutes of each other every day or two.

Once a user posts enough story comments that Laurel or whoever approves, they seem to get added to some sort of "trusted commenter" list, and they can comment on stories instantly without moderation. It's not clear what the threshold is for being "trusted," some people get it after twenty or thirty story comments, some people seem to still not get it after posting far more.

Probably another case (like AI detection) where Laurel feels she needs to keep the mechanism under wraps or else spam bots and scammers would exploit any loopholes?

If you can see your own comment in the list, does that mean it is not waiting to be moderated? I've never experienced a wait that I know of.

Maybe authors can always comment on their own stories without moderation? Or maybe you're on "the list!"
