I've been on the 'victim' end of that and know how it feels. I go out of my way now when I can to intervene in situations like that. Calling it and helping out those who are hurt by it.

Why are people like that? Some people get off on the cruelty and power trip. Others cover their own insecurities by belittling others. Some are just self-centred and completely oblivious. But I can't think of any good reasons.
