Discussion Thread - 10th Annual Literotica Reader's Choice Awards

I was just thinking that I'd pop in here and say "hi", and maybe pathetically beg for some votes. :) You should vote for me in my two categories because, um...ooh, ooh, I know! Because my nominated work "Checkout" is a real whole story and not a chapter of one! Yeah! And it won "
Erotic Couplings Story of the Month" for July. And, um, because I'm a real person who just writes for the enjoyment and isn't an alt, cheater, sycophant, or any of the other mean things everyone's calling everyone else in this thread. I'm nice. And, um...I can juggle. And, that's it I guess.

So go to these links and vote for "Checkout" by ShimmeringPheonix here: http://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=652149.

Oh, and Aggie here: http://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=652138.

And, um. That's it, I guess.

(A politician I am not and never will be....)

I thoroughly enjoyed that story! Kudos to you!

Just a suggestion... and I'm sure you've heard it before (saw it in the comments)... please for the love of god take out the point of view/headhopping. It really really does annoy readers (as the comments say! )

But it was a good story - fun characters. You have talent.

10TH ANNUAL LITEROTICA READER'S CHOICE AWARDS

My take on the VARIOUS INDIVIDUAL CATEGORIES

GROUP

Here I had to vote for Many Feathers. Even though I favor Freddie in the MOST INFLUENTIAL WRITER category I actually thought our Indian friend was going to triumph there. Surprisingly (to me anyway) it looks like he is going to trail the leaders. So I hope he gets a victory here to assuage his wounds.

. GAY MALE

I didn’t know who to vote for in this category! They’re all chaptered stories and even my Gay expert said he wasn’t voting. So I won’t either.

FIRST TIME

Although FIRST TIME stories should be at the heart of any erotic/porn writing site they aren’t here on LITEROTICA. Unfortunately.

Due I believe to the no “under 18” characters rule here. It’s unfortunate that management can’t get around the legal issues so that we authors could write a normal sexual history for our characters. It’s now a category that produces far too many stories that start: “It was my eighteenth birthday. I was a virgin. I’d never been kissed let alone fondled….”

I chose the story written by Slickman. For those of you who don’t know him I suggest you immediately check out his story page. He’s one of the TOP TEN authors in the history of the site.

FETISH

rachlou always seems to pop up in these contests. In one category or another. I didn’t like the start of this story – there was nothing in the first few paragraphs to make me want to continue. Still, it’s a contest so I read on. In the end I wasn’t sure if it was a LOVING WIVES story, an INCEST story or an EROTIC COULING story. I’m still not sure which fetish was involved here.

The other stories nominated are also a strange group. A couple of them seem to be rewrites of an already existing chapter. Another is a ‘dildo up the guy’s ass’ story which didn’t do much for me. I voted for Saving Showers but not with a lot of conviction.

EXHIBITIONISM

I voted for Changing Room by Travel Girl even though the premise of the story wasn’t very original – the site has thousands of these changing room stories. However the writing is good and the competition is mainly more multi chaptered tales.

…more category choices will follow in the days to come…

I’m james r scouries and I’d like to see some changes…

talking of poetry...

On Poetry on Literotica…

From the submission LITEROTICA NUMBERS BY Owlwhisper

Highs and Lows

A large number of stories have been voted perfect 5.0s. Here are the top two categories in that regard:

Non-Erotic Poetry – 6073
Erotic poetry - 3904

It is impossible to tell from the story listings how many votes these got, but the suspicion is: Not many. It's quite possible that these represent cases where the author voted 5 and no one else voted.

Just as there are "perfect" works, there are cosmically damaged ones. These are pieces that earn the lowest possible rating of 1.0. Here are the top two categories for that dreadful dishonor:

Erotic Poetry – 247
Non Erotic Poetry - 160

Again poetry leads the way with a relatively large number of bombed submissions.

This is perhaps the strangest LITEROTICAN figures I’ve ever seen. Ten thousand poems have been rated PERFECT (and another four hundred have got zeros)! And my pal from Texas would have us believe the RATING is the only important figure!

Poetry is completely different than stories and you know it. Very few poems get more than 25 votes. It's very low voting in general, which screws up your number and point in any case.

My two poems have 16 and 15 votes, 3 and 6 comments, and 2000 and 3000 views, so what does that tell you, oh great number cruncher.

People read what they want to read and vote if they feel like it or their fingers aren't too sticky, otherwise.....

Views are for the writer's information and so are the comments. Most readers don't even look at the score. they look at the title and the story blurt. Does it aound interesting, is it something that might get me off. End of story. The same happens in book stores. The cover has to grab someone first and then they check the excerpt on the back. Marketing is your forte, so you must understand this.

You're extravagant titles show you do. "Mommy, I moaned" "Daddy, I whispered." They are eye grabbing. Good for a lot of views but if the story ain't there, neither are the votes. Real ones anyway.

Are you still loosing thousands of votes in each sweep?

QUOTE SS "Should?" Based on what? Some sort of statistical analysis of "good" vs. "great" stories?

How do you find out this information, in particular the number of comments, before you click open the story?

You’re not related to poorbet are you?

Based on what? Yes, a statistical analysis might help you. But again just a little application of common sense will deliver the same information to your brain.

How does a reader find the number of comments? Well, right off the bat he/she could go to the STORY FEEDBACK forum and study the MOST COMMENTS LIST. Or go to the FEEDBACK PORTAL page and see which stories had received the MOST COMMENTS in the last a)24 hours: b)week; and c)month. That would be a start.

QUOTE tex :nana: He doesn't have a clue. He has to be an accountant with a fetish for numbers.

It’s my pal Freddie :D who’s the accountant!

Actually I now only lose large number of votes on contest stories during the contest in which they’re entered. But bizarrely, on May 1st or 2nd I lost from 1-5 votes on every single one of my stories. This is the first time something like this has happened in over 2 years.

But you definitely shouldn’t have used my “Mommy” and “Daddy” stories for examples. Are you on drugs?

“Daddy” for example in its first year averaged over 2.25% votes to views. Which was incredible! And of course it’s the Most Commented On story on LITEROTICA – on its way to 500 comments.

1DADDYIWHISPERED.jpg

And the wonderful “Mommy” isn’t far behind as it climbs up the All-Time VIEW list.

Selena,

Thanks for your kind words and feedback. I much appreciate it.

For everyone wondering about the P.O.V. switches. *Sigh* When I wrote the story in MS Word, I was able to leave 2 spaces between each switch, so it was clear what was happening. Unfortunately, the formatting for Lit hammered out the spaces so now the constant switches with no note or warning are quite confusing. Having read the story when it went up on the site, I TOTALLY understand where everybody who comments on this is coming from.

Again, thanks for the comments. And now back to the TXRad/James R. Scouries cage match!

It catches you out if you dont do a quick read through once you have copied and pasted. Even when Ive used ~ ~ at either side of a character's thought, I had to be careful that the last ~ actually showed up at the end of the sentance and not the next line and had the same spacing issue as you. Try using a small symbol to seperate your POVs, even if its just a .. or something. I really enjoyed your story and although yes, the diff POVs made me kind of double take, back track over what Id just read to make sure I got it right, it didnt take too much from it!

Perhaps edit the submission and resubmit it with scene breaks between each POV change? Something like **** or whatever. That might make it less confusing.

I'm afraid this might get buried in all the insults on this thread, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU to those people out there who voted for my story in the Exhibitionist contest (http://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=652151). I've always written only for my own pleasure, but it's so so rewarding to know that other people enjoy what I write too! I'm not really interested in all the campaigns and alliances that seem to be coming along with the contest, so I'll just leave it at that: Thank you! =)

One more thing: I don't really understand the problem that so many other people have with chapters of a longer series versus individual stories. It may make things a little hard to compare, i guess, but it seems like that's true with any stories that are different styles. Personally I try to make sure that every one of my chapters has everything that a reader would want from a typical literotica story: characters, full sex scenes, intros and conclusions, its own individual mini-conflict/resolution or if not that, at least some kind of plot development, etc. It just makes sense; if you're submitting them individually, then you should be able to enjoy them individually too, right?

Someone mentioned that it doesn't make sense that someone would win a pulitzer for a chapter of a novel, which is true i guess...but it does make sense that a contest or a lit magazine might put short stories next to excerpts or chapters from novels. Which is basically what this is. Just my thoughts.

I couldn't agree with you more about chapter stories, however, you must understand that the rule was made to punish me, the king of chapter stories.

They didn't want me winning the Survivor Contest or any contest with a chapter story. When they saw me entering 16 individual chapters, as I did in last year's Nude Day contest, they got a little pissed.

What it comes down to is, most of the complaints came from AHers who post on the board 24/7 but who do not write or even read stories or poems.

Then, we have the 'imagined' great writers who think this is a literary board and not a porn board. They eliminate the stories that the majority of writers submit with a narrow critique, sr71plt and Dr. Abuse are two who believe no one else can write a story but them.

Now, even the Survivor competition has the rule that a story must be a 'stand alone' story.

Stand alone story? I never heard of such a thing and I have a degree in English. Moreover Northeastern University in Boston, where I graduated from only required its English majors to take 5 writing courses. I took 32.

Now, there is fiction and there is non-fiction. No where is there 'stand alone'.

Nonetheless, they implemented the rule because they thought that I found a loophole. Surely, I wouldn't be a prolific if they denied me the ability to submit the dreaded chapter story.

Stay tuned. Watch this space. Here they come, all those in favor, to vomit their opinion.

Hey, can anyone tell me if Literotica will remove or sweep all the make believe votes, all those dozens of votes from the same 3 or 4 people, from DanielleKitten and Soular, as they do in the monthly and theme contests?

Or is this contest going to be a fix and a shame just like every other contest around here? Just wondering.

Okay, I'll just step aside to allow all the nasty AHer's to voice their complaints that I have sour grapes or am whining about not winning the Most Influential Writer and Most Influential Poet for 2008 and 2007 for that matter, when, in fact, I am.

"You may kiss my ring."

Scouries - despite your assertion that I have had nominations in every contest since the beginning of time, the nominations last year were my first. I don't "always pop up" as you phrase it - I don't exactly nominate myself! My work is nominated because, presumably, I have fans who like it and therefore vote highly. I'm just grateful that people appreciate the effort i put in to write!!

Regarding my story in the fetish category - sex during pregnancy is considered a fetish. Might not be your cuppa tea, but it floats some peoples boats. Not sure how you thought it might be an incest story? The protaganists were not related. Thanks for reading anyway.

Actually, I'm one of the writers here who voted for you because...I like your stories.

Not to take sides, but I can see where Jim is coming from. You have enjoyed more success than many other writers here, namely myself.

It appears the contests here are not run fairly and that has nothing to do with you or with your obvious talent as a writer. Nonetheless, when AHer's get behind one writer over another just because they dislike a writer, which has nothing to do with his or her stories, it's wrong.

If you look at the Most Influential Writer contest, you'd see that the AHer's called out by Boxlicker for AHer's to vote for any one writer but me, Soular is winning the contest by far.

Now, this is a man or woman, who knows, who has only submitted two stories. How can he or she possibly be deemed as the Most Influential anything?

Then, we have DanielleKitten who hasn't written anything new in a while and who has instead resubmitted all her previous work, stories written prior to 2008 and stories that she pulled while blaming me for pulling them. So, how can she be the Most Influential Writer for 2008?

Now, we all know that she lied about me insulting her and she's since apologized. Nonetheless, her little ploy worked and turned so many against me that they bashed all my stories and erased all my red H's over and again.

So, I can certainly understand why Scouries posted what he did, just as I can understand that it is unfair that he picked you out of so many who abuse the way that the contests are run here, not that you are abusing the contest. Yet, you are reaping the rewards of those who abuse the contests, unfortunately, but fortunately for you.

What it comes down to for me is I'm at peace with the fact that I'll never win a contest here. Yet, I didn't come here for contests. I came here to post my stories. All the other stuff is not relevant to what I want to do with my writing.

Good luck to you in the contest.

Freddie - you made some good points. I know the contest is unfair - as many others have pointed out, it's basically a popularity contest and people vote because of the writer, not the work. I just think Scouries could make his points without picking on individuals. I may have posted on the AH for a few months, but i'm not a regular by any stretch of the imagination. I haven't posted on there in a long time, so if people choose to vote for me, I rather hope its because they like my work, not the picture of my ass. Either way, it's their choice. But i certainly don't agree with political voting - that is wrong whichever way you look at it. Undermines the whole point of the contest.

I write for the feedback, not the prizes. Thanks, as always, for your vote. :rose:

Oh, my God! I'm so sorry, Rachel. I forgot to mention your ass.

Surely, without doubt, if I had an ass like that, I'd have a few blue W's next to my stories.

Is that really your ass? That's an incredible, edible ass. It inspires me to write a story about...asses.

Kidding aside, your points are as valid as they are well taken. It is unfortunate that great writers, such as Many Feathers is as exasperated with the whole contest system here and feels that he must leave. That's a shame. The site would lose a great storyteller.

I'm beginning to agree with sr71plt that they should abolish contests. Then, again, I'm beginning to agree with Scouries that Literotica should pay writers for submitting stories.

Truly, it is such an empty feeling to write and create a story only to have it unmercifully bashed and then watch it flounder in a contest when other stories, lessor stories than your story, perhaps, are winning undeserved accolades.

We are powerless pawns. The only choice we have as a writer is to submit or not to submit, no pun intended.

At first I was kind of pumped to see I had a story nominated (Alisha, Transexual cata) but the reading this thread just ruins the entire experience.

Don't...

At first I was kind of pumped to see I had a story nominated (Alisha, Transexual cata) but the reading this thread just ruins the entire experience.

Let it get you down. Be proud of what you write, particularly if others respond and let you know they've enjoyed it. Unfortunately, until things change, it is what it is. I do believe the contests themselves have morphed into what I'm now thinking American Idol has...more popularity than real talent. Not that talent isn't recognized, I think it is. But it still boils down for the most part to Trolls, or friends of friends of friends swaying the majority.

I can live with a negative comment, even find amusement when someone gets angry, frustrated (as though the character in the story is real, or that the situation I created was also real, enough so to piss them off because of it) when that happens, I feel like I wrote a pretty good story. But when you get a feedback simply telling you you misspelled a word, or inserted a wrong name, and that you're an idiot for doing that. That for me does tend to take the wind out of my sails.

So enjoy your writing, I do and always will. But perhaps its time to move on to another venue in sharing that, at least for me, its starting to look that way.

Good luck to you, and to everyone. I hope those who honestly deserve the recognition and appreciation for their efforts will receive it. And to those few who don't...well, enjoy your fifteen seconds of fame.

I’ll admit it – I only checked this years and lasts. And assumed…

And yes your work is clearly appreciated by certain readers which is excellent. Are they predominately AHers and tit-for-tatters? Who knows… certainly you’re part of the small group of elitist insiders who invariably work the contest to ensure your kind win. And why not if you can do it…

QUOTE rachlou Regarding my story in the fetish category - sex during pregnancy is considered a fetish. Might not be your cuppa tea, but it floats some peoples boats. Not sure how you thought it might be an incest story? The protaganists were not related. Thanks for reading anyway.

When I said I didn’t get the ‘fetish’ I was actually trying to be serious. I’ve never considered sex with a pregnant woman a fetish. Nor drinking from milk laden breasts for that matter.

The INCEST angle? Maybe I should have called it QUASI INCEST. I see it all the time on the site. Writers throwing in brother-in-laws and father-in-laws left and right to try to attract the incest reader.

You’re a pretty good wrier but this one didn’t seem that inspired to me – remember this statement is made in the context that the story is vying to become the #1 story submitted to the site in this category last year. Which to me demands quite a lot.

Frankly, as I tried to indicate in my post, I found none of the nominees particularly outstanding. And I believe this has more to do with the nominating process than it does with the quality of stories submitted in the category over the year.

QUOTE rachlou I just think Scouries could make his points without picking on individuals.

My point is I believe the nominating process is flawed. its hard to make this point if I don’t refer to the stories/authors nominated. I don’t particularly like serena but that’s not why I don’t believe a LIST is the #1 ESSAY submitted to the site in 2008.

My second main point is that I believe the voting system is flawed. And hence I’ll address that too.

I also believe that all the chapters of one story should be considered as one story only for contest purposes. And so I’ll single out chaptered nominations when I comment (see my comment on secretme coming in a future post.

C’mon chief! You’re loved for crying out loud. Relentlessly pushed up the FAVORITEST list by your adoring readers.

And shee-it man, you’ve already won this contest!

The only male author ever to win. Thats why i think it's freddies time.

Please do not leave – your presence enhances the LITEROTICA experience.

Pride in writing or negative comments aren't the issue. It's just embarassing to be associated with a good chunk of these sad, pathetic people with lives so wretched they've chosen to supplement them with outlandish, Reality TV type online personas.

And what did you think was going to happen? Here we’re having an election on a site that has millions of viewers spread across the globe.

Did you really believe it was going to be all lovey dovey? From this group? Christ man, half the AHers on the site earn money writing Republican hate ads every time there’s an election.

And you should see what they’re saying about you in their backroom PM’s.

Pride in writing or negative comments aren't the issue. It's just embarassing to be associated with a good chunk of these sad, pathetic people with lives so wretched they've chosen to supplement them with outlandish, Reality TV type online personas.

Unfortunately, some of these people who post here 24/7 and who don't write or even read a story or poem believe they are their avatars.
