Discussion Thread - 10th Annual Literotica Reader's Choice Awards

Let it get you down. Be proud of what you write, particularly if others respond and let you know they've enjoyed it. Unfortunately, until things change, it is what it is. I do believe the contests themselves have morphed into what I'm now thinking American Idol has...more popularity than real talent. Not that talent isn't recognized, I think it is. But it still boils down for the most part to Trolls, or friends of friends of friends swaying the majority.

I can live with a negative comment, even find amusement when someone gets angry, frustrated (as though the character in the story is real, or that the situation I created was also real, enough so to piss them off because of it) when that happens, I feel like I wrote a pretty good story. But when you get a feedback simply telling you you misspelled a word, or inserted a wrong name, and that you're an idiot for doing that. That for me does tend to take the wind out of my sails.

So enjoy your writing, I do and always will. But perhaps its time to move on to another venue in sharing that, at least for me, its starting to look that way.

Good luck to you, and to everyone. I hope those who honestly deserve the recognition and appreciation for their efforts will receive it. And to those few who don't...well, enjoy your fifteen seconds of fame.

My deepest apologies to you, Many Feathers. If I knew the contest was going to turn in a a fiasco of AHer's trying to get back at me by voting for DK or Soular, I would have withdrawn my nomination.

I one point I even told the AHers to vote for you instead of DK and Soular, a more realisitic choice to be the Most Influential since you've written nearly as many stories in that time frame as I have.

Again I'm sorry and I hope you will not leave the site.

And you should see what they’re saying about you in their backroom PM’s.

You’re not in the little leagues anymore.

What backroom PM?s What little leagues? Nobody here even knows who I am, nor do they give a shit. I've written half a dozen stories.

However, if a time comes where someone does know who I am, it'll be because I wrote something they liked, and not because they recognize the name because I act like Lit's version of Puck Rainey.

Hmm, I wasn't going to say anything at first b/c I was so happy about just being nominated, but I feel that some of you are implying that I don't deserve to win b/c I only have 2 stories? I looked over Owlwhisperers numbers for Lit...and one thing that was interesting to me was he stated...those who had QUANTITY...were never on the same list of those who have QUALITY. Now, in saying that...I'm not putting anyone down, but I was listed 2nd on all of Literotica for QUALITY according to his numbers. I may not have 600 stories under my belt, but the two I do have I'm extremely proud of. Of course the sweeps have removed several of my votes, but for a category that doesn't receive much recognition, I was averaging about 250-350 votes, and for one chapter I had over 550, including 114 comments. So, I think I've earned my little spot. I'm still growing and I'm still new, but please don't think I'm doing well only b/c people want to put you down. My votes aren't coming from those who don't like you, rather from those who really loved my stories. And like it was pointed out on the first page...I was a nobody...so I can't be doing well based on popularity. I'm doing well based on the fact people really liked my story.

And from what I've understood, some of you complaining have already won these contest, so I don't know what's wrong w/ letting a few newbies...who actually really enjoyed reading your stories before I even posted my own...get a little recognition for the hard work we've done. We're all in it for the same thing. To let people read and enjoy our work. So don't ruin the little bit of fun we do get from things like this.

Just my own two cents, not meant to upset anyone.

Thanks,

Soular

My apologies. I have nothing against you personally. You are a pawn in a deceitful game here at Literotica.

Unless you count the Survivor Contest as winning a contest, I've never won a contest here. I'm not allowed. Yes, I've written more than 600 stories, but not all my stories are Survivor rushed quality just to post quantity. There are some stories and novels that I am very proud of, too, as you are proud of your two stories.

Yet, I'd be curious how many votes you'd lose if Literitca did a sweep of your Most Influential Writer votes. I'm not suggesting you have anything to do with Boxlicker publically posting that all of AH land should vote for anyone but me, but you are being used.

It's not a fair contest. Perhaps, your two stories are very good, I don't know. Yet, to suggest that you are the Most Influential Writer for 2008 is just as ridiculous as suggesting that DanielleKitten should be named the Most Influential Writer when all of her stories are just reposted stories that she pulled from prior years and reposted in 2008.

Hey, I'm not the only writer who should have been nominated and you were nominated for the Most Influential Writer not because you are the Most Influential Writer but because your two stories were very good. Yet, writing two stories, no matter how good they are makes you the Most Influential Writer.

You quote how many votes you've received for your two stories, well, they pale in comparison to all the votes, comments, and hits I've received for my 602 stories and 69 poems.

Listen, it's unfortunate that they players who have no life and nothing better to do than to play games with people, but there are a dozen writers here who should have been nominated for the Most Influential Writer category and they were not. It's not fair and it put you in a bad light as a new writer here for them to have picked you as a pawn.

I wish there were a better system. Perhaps, Laurel, Manu, and a collection of writers should pick the winners of contests rather than have people who have dozens of identities and access to dozens of computers pick the winners of contests.

I've been bannished and bashed because I'm outspoken, I'm from Boston, I wrote one too many stories, I complained, I prefer dogs to cats, I'm not gay or lesbian or a post op transsexual, but whatever the reason, this sucks.

So...don't blame me. I'm just a puppet playing my part in this drama.

Nice to meet you. Good luck to you in the contest. Have a nice day

Based purely on reading this thread, I can completely see why people could develop a negative opinion about you, and it has zero to do with any of the reasons you listed above. I have a feeling that in a Venn diagram of how you think you come across, and how you come across, there is no overlap of the circles.

Yes, of course, and how many identities do you have? Who's sock puppet are you?

Hey, I just came here to write stories. Diagram that. Only, I wasn't allowed to write my stories in peace as you are. Circle that.

Because I dare to be too prolific, I was targeted. How dare I? Who the fuck am I to come here and write all these stories?

Don't give me shit about diagrams and circles. This is about the bad behavior of people who have no life, who live here 24/7, and post on these boards. This is their good time.

My good time is writing a story.

Now, take your pointer, charts, and diagrams and go away. You're making a fool of yourself.

Oh, and don't forget to have a nice day. Bye.

Yeah. That didn't at all make my point for me.

You could never upset us young lady. And if you do upset an AHer, well, tough titty…

As to your work I wholeheartedly agree! The readers did love your stories. One only has to look at the TOP RATED list for INTERRACIAL stories. It’s been soularized!!!

You were my third choice out of the five nominees. I still hope F*r*e*d*d*i*e :D wins. I hope the last two weeks will bring a flocking to his banner.

MF had been my second choice but this threatening to quit the site (even though he’s widely loved) has pissed me off a bit. We certainly don’t need another DK type episode. So now you’re my second choice.

I was actually quite surprised during the first week of the voting because you were lagging so far behind. The nomination process had made me very aware of how famous you had become even though I’d never heard of you. It also hinted at a marketing prowess that rivals the kitten sisters  + :p (please, please promise me that you’re not one of them). So when you marshaled your troops last week and then immediately shot up in the various categories you were nominated in I wasn’t surprised. Instead I was both impressed and admirous of your skill.

But its your very skill at gathering votes that makes all of the regulars nervous. It belies the term ‘newbie’. How’d she do it? Who is she really? Etc., etc.

So, if you’re not one of the sisters, good luck. Heck, you’re a fellow 100+ COMMENT club member.

Mind you I still wish they had put SamuelX up against you in INTERRACIAL. Now that would have been interesting...

Hi, it’s Gabby,

The boss asked me to post some numbers from yesteryear on the MOST INFLUENTIAL WRITER contest.

We’ve already got some 251 votes cast in this years contest. Which is pretty darn good. Below are the vote totals for previous contests. As you can see we’re only halfway through this years contest and already more votes have been cast than in any of the last three years. Another 130 or so and a new record will be set. C’mon readers, you can do it!

The biggest winning total (135) was amassed by someone I’ve never heard of and its not going to be easy for anyone to break it this year. But she went from 135 to 77 to 37 which must have been hard to live through.

ManyFearthers, aka Thesandman, won one year with 75 but then lost with 77 the next.

The good doctor has lost four times in the last five which can’t be fun. I say lets make it three strikes and you’re out.

KillerMuffin won in the first year but it was found later that significant irregularities had occurred. Then she gave up writing and became a full time critic. So there’s no guarantees…

10TH ANNUAL LITEROTICA READER'S CHOICE AWARDS

My take on the VARIOUS INDIVIDUAL CATEGORIES

EROTIC HORROR

Now we have some strange choices here. Different chapters of the same story are nominated! This could be the first time in the history of the site this has happened (lets hope so anyway). This certainly highlights the problems of the LITEROTICA ANNUAL AWARDS nominating system.

This is stupid! Can you imagine the outcry if secretme got 20 votes for each of the two chapters of her story (for a total of 40 votes) and Ambrosiablood got 21 on his nomination and won?

The other nominee (manyeyedhydra) also has 2 stories nominated! I’m not sure if they’re both part of the same story or not.

C’mon LAUREL Surely in future we can nominate 5 different authors can’t we? Give a few more people a chance at fame and fortune.

In the end I didn’t vote for Mira because I couldn’t decide which chapter was best. Now if they had nominated chapter 5 that would have been a different story…

EROTIC COUPLINGS

I voted for Checkout by ShimmeringPhoenix in spite of the fact he’s not very good spelling city names. Just kidding! Actually any story that has received 67 comments is going to get my vote. It looks like this story is going to be a future member of the 100+ comments club. Well done!

CHAIN STORIES

This category I’ve never understood. Four different authors have written stories with the same name and all of them have been nominated? How much of a longshot is that?

The Blue Emu got my vote (although I was tempted to vote for LadyF). rachlou turned up in this category too! She’s everywhere. Mind you I would like to say for the record that she is a wonderful person.

CELEBRITIES

I’ve never liked the CELEBRITY category. I find something distasteful about making up sexual stories about public figures.

I had a further problem in this contest because I didn’t know any of the celebrities written about. Some seemed to be ‘fictional’ celebrities and others were people I’d never heard of. Megan Fox? Laurie Forman?

I didn’t vote.

ANAL

I chose Raging Robyn by smithjon1919. Only because of a week I spent with a charming young lady named Robyn some years ago.

…phew! I’m finally finished with the individual categories…

I’m james r scouries and I’d like to see some changes…

Soular, Scouries blames the fact that he has never won a contest on the members of the AH (Authors Hangout). He thinks we all gang up on him. I'd say 80% of the AH have him on ignore. That sounds like a group that's out to get someone doesn't it.

Please visit the AH before you take his word for us. You'll find a truly caring and intelligent group there. You will fit in fine and make some very good friends.

Actually, other than your smug arrogance, I've found many of the people mean and nasty and because of that, those people of the AH who are nice don't want to comment for fear of turning the other mean and nasty AH members against them.

Just like when Charley Whore, I think that's her name, posted to sr71plt not to post to my thread. She actually posted on my thread telling sr71plt not to post to my thread. Now what the Hell is that?

Is that the kind of caring and intelligent behavior that you are referring to? I don't consider that caring and intelligent behavior.

Then, let's see, there is BitchChick who follows me from thread to thread making comments about my dead mother (sniff). How is that caring and intelligent behavior?

Then, we have DanielleKitten who said that she was removing all of her stories because I attacked her, which turned out to be as fictional as her stories. Now, I don't know about you, but I don't consider that as caring and intelligent behavior.

Oh, and what about Dr. Abuse calling my stories shit and my writing shit? What about that comment is caring and intelligent?

Then, we have sr71plt who uses the board as his bully pulpit. He actually believes that Literotica is a literary site and not a porn site. Nothing he has ever posted has been caring or intelligent.

And what about all the miscellaneous sock puppets and mutl-alts of AH members who use them to disguise their caring and intelligent comments as mean and nasty?

Lastly, ever since I turned off my anonymous comments to my stories, I haven't had one mean and nasty comment. I suspect that the caring and intelligent people of AH land were hiding in anonymity to post their caring and intelligent albeit mean and nasty comments to my stories. What do you think?

Further, I don't think it was anyone other than the caring and intelligent people of the AH who erased my red H's seven times, until I finally closed the voting on the remaining red H's that I had left, otherwise, they'd be gone too.

Yes, I can see how you would think that the AH people are caring and intelligent. What are you drinking? I'd like some, too.

Shame on you! Take that back about writing about having sex with celebrities.

I like writing about celebrities having sex with me.

Hey, it's the only time I'm going to have sex with a celebrity, other than Angie Dickinson who keeps calling me and leaving inappropriate voice messages on my phone.

Sorry BFW, no drinks for you. You are paranoid enough already. You've finally caught up with scouries on the AH excuse. Between you two and Sarahhhh who thinks everyone is DK, it's getting scary out there.

Based purely on reading this thread, I can completely see why people could develop a negative opinion about you, and it has zero to do with any of the reasons you listed above. I have a feeling that in a Venn diagram of how you think you come across, and how you come across, there is no overlap of the circles.

Nobody can be banished, except by Laurel and Manu. People, including BFW and me and you and everybody here can be bashed, and most of us are. Personally, I have bashed BFW because he likes to write rambling, pointless "stories" that are broken down into mulltiple short chapters so he can post them separately and get a lot of points in the Survibors' Contest. This is certainly contrary to the original aim of the contest, which is one of the reasons why we dislike him. Another more important one is the truly despicable comments on a thread posted by a grieving mother. For that, most of us, including I, have him on ignore.

Selena,
For everyone wondering about the P.O.V. switches. *Sigh* When I wrote the story in MS Word, I was able to leave 2 spaces between each switch, so it was clear what was happening. Unfortunately, the formatting for Lit hammered out the spaces so now the constant switches with no note or warning are quite confusing. Having read the story when it went up on the site, I TOTALLY understand where everybody who comments on this is coming from.

Just so you know, if you ever tried to publish it, it would be the first thing an editor would say to you - regardless of your punctuation or whatever you did to set it off. Readers HATE the headhopping. Even if you separate it, however you do.

If you have a different SCENE with another point of view, that's a different story. But if you are jumping POV within in scene? Nuh-uh. It's a deal-breaker.

It would be a better story if it was just from one POV, to tell you the truth. I enjoyed the hell out of it, even as is... but as a reader? The headhopping was really annoying, and would have been, I'm afraid, even if it had been more "clear." :(

You should be. Good luck, Soular. And welcome to the madhouse. ;)

Soxlicker or Cocksucker, what ever the fuck your name is, you've been starting shit going back to 2007 with me over the Survivor Contest and it wouldn't surprise me if you were one of the assholes or the only asshole who bashed my stories and erased my red H's.

Tell them about how I helped you publish your story, you ungrateful, old fucking prick and then you turned on me.

Tell them about all the mean and nasty shit you continually write about me, you motherfucker.

Tell them how fucked up you truly are that you wouldn't know good writing from bad writing, so long as it is a story that has an old fuck, such us yourself with your head up your ass.

Tell them about you asking all your pals to vote for one person in the Most Influential Writer, so that I wouldn't win.

You and Selena and Danielle and others have attacked me since I was given a Green fucking E that made you green with envy. Get a life you little weasel. None of this is real, you moron.

Then, once I started receiving some attention, once you saw how prolific I was, it was game on. You all targeted me but I fought back. Now, if Selena had a baby and the baby died, then I am sorry for that and sorry for her. Yet, there are so many lying assholes on this site that you never know who to believe and when to believe them.

No one tells the truth and everyone has a dozen alts with their own stories. You assholes even use your alts to argue with yourselves. For all I know, you could be fucking Selena. Who the fuck knows?

What I know is this, you are a slimy person, someone who cannot be trusted and if you were here I'd kick your ass. Only, you're too fucking old to hit. What are you 67-years-old by your last admission? Shouldn't you be tending to your grandchildren or do you have a court order forcing you to stay away from children, you fucking degenerate.

I hope when you go to sleep tonight, you die in your own vomit, you fucking filthy prick.

Ah, I feel better.

Oh, and have a nice evening.

Sorry BFW, no drinks for you. You are paranoid enough already. You've finally caught up with scouries on the AH excuse. Between you two and Sarahhhh who thinks everyone is DK, it's getting scary out there.

Paranoid my ass and you know it. That's all you have to write is that I'm paranoid and none of what I wrote could possibly be the truth.

Then, go fuck yourself and put me on ignore because I'm done with you.

Selena,

Thanks for your kind words and feedback. I much appreciate it.

Again, thanks for the comments. And now back to the TXRad/James R. Scouries cage match!

I was puzzled by what you meant by POV switches. I looked at your stories, and they all seem to be in first person. How do you switch POV when you write in first person? In third person, you can switch back and forth, and say what somebody sees or thinks, etc. , and then do the same for another person. You almost have to, in third person.

I haven't looked at the story, but I would assume what Selena means is that characters switch off frequently giving first person POV comment (she says sometimes even in the same paragraph--and you aren't supposed to even provide dialogue from more than one character in the same paragraph). That's what would be disconcerting. Usually first person POV is from the perspective of just one of the characters unless/until there was a clear section break before you go off into first-person POV of another character.

And, no, it isn't any more "all right" at least in current U.S. market technique, to write in third person omniscient--where the reader hears the inner thoughts of multiple characters as delivered through the narrator. This is still fairly popular in the UK market--but not in the U.S. market. You don't "almost have to"--third person can remain from one character's perspective--and usually is within clearly deliniated sections.

:D:D I go away for a couple of days and the three stoogies are at war with everybody. I see nothing changes just who is being insulted by BFW, Scouries and crew. Growup guys.:D:D

Switching POV within a scene becomes rather schizo. The reader starts thinking he's hearing voices :D Now with 3rd person omniscient, you can switch POV from scene to scene. It sort of reads (to give a bad example... in terms of writing, at any rate) like Dan Brown's books. But switching WITHIN a scene creates that schizo feeling again.

Like anything, if done really really well, POV switches (even within one scene) CAN work. But that's more the exception than the rule.

Yeah...

I've tangled with that a few times myself. And it really can get very confusing if you're not careful. Tend to stay away from doing that now.

In defense of soular

I've been reading all kinds of speculation about soular, including questions as to how she got nominated as most influential author, and various other questions and allegations against her. I'd like to make a couple of things clear to everyone. Soular is a person of unmatched integrity. She is exactly who she says she is, and she has done nothing to warrant the aspersions on her character that some have made.

Soular has not only played by the rules, she has bent over backwards to be fair to the other authors on Literotica, and I can vouch for that.

All four nominations in the present contest occurred before soular was even aware of the nomination process, so she obviously had nothing to do with gaining the nominations for herself. The nominations were legitimately submitted by her readers, and the nominations were fully justified, in my opinion, including the one for most influential author.

Soular has obviously had a great deal of influence on many of her readers, as is evidenced by the number of votes she is receiving for all four awards. She also has had a good deal of influence on more than a few of her fellow authors, who have indicated this to her privately, and sometimes publicly. If there are a few Literotica authors who weren't aware of her influence before, I hope that is no longer the case.

Soular deserves every nomination, every vote, and everyone's respect.
