Do you use social media?

I use social media to keep contact with long distance friends and family. Its instantaneous conversation.

Plus I belong to multiple groups that are about things I am interested in. Firefighting, woodworking, comedy, world and national news, cooking, cars, trucks, the environment, construction, are a few.

And what sites? It seems to me that in the past three years a lot of people have left social media and are now doing other stuff.
I left fakebook and Twitter long ago. I may reopen an account on X now that Elon has purged most of the Ministry Of Truth Officials.

Oh? You mean like those that censor and silence political view points that you don't approve of?
I follow a small circle of friends and colleagues. I curate my feed heavily, blocking or unfollowing people I don't want to hear from. I ignore what the algorithm feeds me. Blue checks and crypto get blocked on sight.

Sure they do. You are the ultimate censor, or attempted censor of anything that doesn't fit neatly into your world. Classical hypocritical phony liberal.

Yes, there has been a decrease in users, since Musk took over, about 23%. Not good for a revenue perspective. Maybe sign back up, Musk can use the help...

It really depends on who they are. If the 4channers and Redditors left, that's a win. The remaining users are much more valuable to advertisers.

Societal change starts where people are free to discuss anything. That is a constantly moving location, as censorship arrives at any popular medium to exclude hate speech, extremist views, misinformation, or whatever the censors call banned speech. The few social media sites that are still uncensored or not censored much tend to be ridiculed and attacked, like 4chan and Elon's site.
Solidly realistic.

With viewpoint discrimination, society becomes an echo chamber.

And yet most of the big Tech companies want echo chambers... why?

Because they are in bed with the government and share interests. An example would be Twitter when FBI agents and government officials were directing and censoring its publishing policy for obvious political gain. They were acting in collusion. For a while we had government officials directing the marketing efforts of Ford Motor Company and others in efforts to force Americans to buy electric cars. When this happens it's technically referred to as Fascism or corporatism.

The market has not yet caught up, and there is a media blitz against them.

This is why many people are moving over to the Fediverse.
Or maybe it's because the market doesn't want to be associated with a product, quickly moving to rightwing propaganda. Seems you forgot Twitter was losing money prior to Musk buying it. All he did was bleed off the major advertisers.
