cookiejar said:A few days had passed, Slick was off on another "business trip." He had spent a good deal of time in his office, I knew something was up(so to speak.) A few times I listened at the door and though the words were indistinguishable, they were low and seductive. I was a fool to let it get to me, I mean I knew what he was like when I met him. I was his property, he held all the cards.
I went on stage that night and as I sang I really listened to the words.
"Someday he'll come along
The man I love
And he'll be big and strong
The man I love
And when he comes my way
I'll do my best to make him stay"
The gold of my dress shimmered, as did the tears in my eyes. I felt miserable, which only enhanced my voice. I felt I had the audience in my hand, my power over them strong and potent. After the set I went to my dressing room, I wanted out of the dress. It was an image, artificial like me.
A knock and AA asked if he could come in. He had the look of a cat who ate the canary and my heart sank.
"Well the boss took care of that yutz who was around here," he smirked.
My hand was poised in the air as I looked in the mirror, "What do you mean?" I had a feeling I already knew.
"The boss sent around a couple "enforcers." I doubt you will see that Sterling guy around here again."
After AA left with a smug smile on his face I looked at myself once more in the mirror. I knew what I had to do. Tossing on my fur coat I quietly let myself out the back door. I ran down the dark alley, my heels on the pavement loud in the relative quiet of the night. I found a booth and ordered a taxi, trying not to think what I may find. The cabbie looked at me, hair falling out, stage makeup, huge eyes, trembling hands, but mercifully said nothing.
The guy at the front desk was more dead than alive at this hour and jumped as I tapped the bell. "Yeah? Whatcha want lady?"
"Sterling...is he here?"
"Oh yea," he yawned. "A car drove up a few hours ago and they dumped him on the street. Christ, what a mess!"
"Give me a key," I said.
"Wha?"
"You heard me, I want a key to his room...NOW!"
My tone of voice got to him and he handed me the key, yelling something I didn't catch as I ran to the elevator.
It took a few tries to open the door, my hands were shaking so badly. He was on the bed and tried to set up, but even that was an effort.
I sat on the bed, "Lay still, it's Cookie." He grew quiet and I turned on the light. I gasped in shock, his eyes were swollen, caked blood had formed by his mouth and nose. He groaned my name, but I shushed him. Tears filled my eyes, this was all my fault! I knew Slick's temper, I knew his ways.
I gingerly washed his face, his knuckles were scraped. He must have got in a few shots of his own. Once more he tried to speak, but I put my finger to his lips and implored him to rest. As he drifted off I put a chair under the doorknob, silly but I felt more protected. Tomorrow I had to make Sterling get out of town. As soon as AA found me gone...I shuddered.
Taking off the dress and shoes I climbed in beside Sterling. He was out like a light and I willed myself to sleep...
