Fishing

I wish you a great time! If you've not been offshore, prepare for motion sickness. Prior planning prevents a really fun time from turning to crap.

Agreed. Don't do the draminine *sp*. Fresh ginger root. That will help if there is motion sickness. I grew up almost most of my life near the ocean and never needed it, but it is sworn by to give to tourists going on deep sea trips.

I have never had motion sickness, but to be on the safe side I plan to take meds. It would suck to get out there and be ill the whole time.

I was ill once in my life on a boat. I don't take meds. Ginger is great and it helps to warm your system, too. I just stay out of confined spaces with diesel fumes and i'm fine.

I hope to go deep sea fishing this year. I have never gone and always wanted to. I am really looking forward to it.

We usually fish deep for halibut. It's during the winter and late summer that we fish for salmon.

Deep sea fishing is great. I love being achored up and watching the whales and sealions swim dangerously close to the boat.

It hurts like hell, though, when you have to reel in a 200 pound fish from 250 feet. It takes a while to get feeling back in your arms.

My brother in law was fishing in a 19ft. skiff during a halibut tournament in Seward. He ended up winning with a 328 pound fish. For the life of me, I cannot EVEN image being in such a small boat trying to get that slab of fish reeled in. He ended up having to drag it to the judge's dock. From the same boat, during the same derby, my brother's girlfriend won 2nd place with a 298 pound fish. Was a very lucky day for that very little skiff.

4 fruited Coronas and 12 Ritz crackers works every time for motion sickness. :)

Really, if you feel ill, look out at the horizon, not the scenery/water close to you.

My fisting thread was way better than this.

Oh...

Nevermind.

Nice thread, Thor.

Whine. It is a great thread, Perg. There is as much to the depths under the water, as the mountains that reach the clouds. Much to be found.

You didn't read my post carefully enough.

I love the ocean. I dive and kayak. Sail a bit. Tried surfing and loved it. I grew up on the coast and caught a fourteen pound bluefish when I was twelve. Used to surfcast a little too.

My grandmother and I had buckets of fun fishing on the lake where she lived in NH. Probably my best memories of the 13-15 ages.

Mrs Perg and her parents fly-fish. I'm planning to get her to teach me one of these days.

I figured i'd start a thread on either tits, butts or fishing......fishing won, because it combines the others

I like to fish in the brackish waters here.
Get great snook and red fish.
Getting out into the Gulf is new for me.

It is a relaxing way to spend time in the sun.

I am quite embarrassed.

As I stated to Thor, I can't get on the fly fishing wrist action. I thought it said fisting.

Fly fisting?

Anyone else think it's funny that Luxey showed up a couple posts after I introduced fisting to the fishing thread?

We went fishing last weekend on the other side of Douglas Island (other side of Juneau). When we left the harbor, the water was like glass. It was chilly, but clear. We had just put our lines in the water when my daughter called and told us we should come back in. She said it was snowing and damn near white out conditions in town. Of course, I freaked out and insisted that we reel in our lines and head for home. It's a terrible feeling to be out on the the water in the winter when the visiblity is low. (I've been in that situation before and sprouted 1/2 a head of gray hairs to prove it.). So, we took off and headed back to Auke Bay.

It wasn't even an hour later when the sky cleared up and it stopped snowing and it turned out to be a really nice day. I was bummed. We could've stayed out on the water!!

I've caught one winter king so far this year. He was a beautiful fish and was even more beautiful on the grill.

This is some of the smoked salmon I sent to a good Lit buddy. We still have pounds and pounds of it in the freezer.
