Five Things Go Wrong, the RPG - OOC/Recruitment

I am working on a post right now. Just need to clarify one thing with Kiz, and I should be good to go for the most part. Hopefully everybody else will be able to go from there, lol.

The first reply to the IC thread is up. It should give HC and MsAmative enough to go on to get them to the table with Aegar and Kosta. Then I figure Aegar can brief them on the mission, and Tamilla can hop in/get brought in whenever the two of you feel it appropriate.

I will get a post up tomorrow. I was out longer than intended. -_- But I was rereading the opening post again and after reading Lucian's post, I got something for ToT.

Kiz, I think you spelled my characters name wrong in your post, a few times, lol,

~LD

Heh, all good. I certainly know what that's like. Just wanted to make sure it got corrected before I posted, lol.

Overview

Name: Marcus Blair
Alias: Captain Blair
Role: Tank
Profession: Soldier
Age: 50
Gender: Male
Race: Nord Human from the Five Cities.
Height: 6’
Weight: 180 lbs
Hair Color: White
Eye Color: Bright Blue

Physical Description:

Marcus is imposing, even for his age. He has spent more of his life wearing heavy armor than without, and it feels like a second skin for him. On his white hair and wrinkled face one could read the sorrows he has witnessed, but he is quick to smile when confronted with the pure in life. He is well muscled and solid, and moves with the even step of the soldier. His eyes are an umbral blue.

Visual Description: Armored Captain
Sexuality: Heterosexual, reduced libido, romantic

Personality

Marcus is a man of his word, a man of honor. He takes his charges seriously and always tries to act in the best interest of his men and those he is sworn to. Laws and structure are paramount, but within the confines of any boundaries imposed by the laws he does his best to do the right thing, to protect those who cannot protect themselves, to be fair and just and honest.
He admires beauty and purity and goodness, but he knows that those are destined to fade and so the joy that they bring him is bittersweet.
From time to time his demeanor may change drastically and suddenly, but he is always quick to recover. He tends to be quiet for a time afterwards.

Background

Marcus

All indications were that Marcus Blair was never destined for greatness. He was not born into high station, he lacked ambition, he had no patron looking out for his best interests. He was merely a hard working, stalwart man of honor. A man who believed in the notion that swearing fealty to great men and in being dutiful in that service would be awarded in good faith. He enlisted with the Baron's pikemen as soon as he was of age, and even saw the Baron briefly once as he and the rest of his unit swore their oaths from the courtyard, observed silently from a balcony above.
He executed his duties precisely and effectively. His superiors would often remark on his dependability and skill, but his lack of impulsiveness meant that he never found glory, and his rise through the ranks was slow and methodical. No one could find fault with him as a soldier or as an officer, yet he was continuously passed over for promotion. It was not until he was well into his fourth decade that he found himself Captain.
As a leader he was firm but fair. He never took undue risk with his men, and he never left one behind. His men knew they were safe with him, and he expected their obedience in return. He had it. They would follow him anywhere.
They proved it one day when he ordered them into the Black Wood.
They had tasked by a minor lord to escort the Lady Larissa, his reluctant bride-to-be from the city of Rhist to the city of Vos, and she had begged them to stop on the way to see the overlook of the Black Wood. Marcus acquiesced, and they were allowed into the keep atop the switchback to rest for the night. In the morning it was discovered that she was gone, somehow descending the switchback to disappear into the Black Wood, a naieve flight from her betrothal into certain death.
The men of the keep could not leave their station and risk the safety of the Barony to seek the girl, and Marcus knew that she could not survive. Even more, it was his duty to see her finish her journey safely and he had failed her. He spoke to his men, who agreed to a man, and so they entered the Wood.

Aeolus

The men and women who live in the Black Wood exist in a twilight where the natural and supernatural intersect. Those that have survived for any length of time are touched by the supernatural in some unique but real way. That was true of those that followed Aeolus.
Aeolus had lived in one form or another longer than any of the tribe could remember - forever, if the stories were to be believed. He was empowered with magic that kept the tribe safe, and so they had survived throughout the years. No matter the age of the body, he was their elder, telling them stories from the history of their tribe and helping to navigate the Wood in safety. There was always an Aeolus, and he always had an heir - one that would be chosen in a sacred ritual and would spend his days preparing for the succession. If Aeolus was to die, his spirit would pass to his heir. This was the most dangerous time for the tribe, due to the inexperience of the vessel. But over time the knowledge came, and always within a few years he would start to call himself Aeolus again, and continue protecting the tribe as he had always done.
The tribe heard the woman stomping through the Wood long before she was visible to them, and had time to meld into the shadows and watch as she clumsily traversed the dark terrain, seemingly at random and sometimes in circles. Larissa would not have seen them if they did not want to be seen. But Aeolus grew curious. It had been some time since they had seen anyone descend, and he wanted to learn of this woman. And so he appeared to her - appeared as a young man of twenty years which was the age of his vessel, but he spoke to her with a voice older than the hills.
She was scared to her core, realizing what a mistake she had made in running but lost in the darkness of the wood, and she all but froze in fear. She barely managed to pull a small dagger from her belt and shakily held the blade out at the boy. Not wanting to harm her, Aeolus motioned, and a young girl emerged from the wood. She cautiously approached Larissa, slowly and without malice. They were intent on their newfound curiosity, and not paying attention to the woods.
Marcus was not the first to spot Larissa. But upon hearing one of his men shout her name, he broke into a run, followed by the rest of his men. The sudden sound of metal-clad feet thundering through the woods startled Larissa, and before she realized what had happened she was looking down at her hand, covered in blood and holding a dagger sunk hilt-deep into the chest of the wide-eyed girl.
Aeolus screamed as he saw his heir slain in front of him, and he rushed towards Larissa as the rest of the tribe emerged from the shadows to fall on the intruders. Men were falling all around him, but Marcus closed the distance between himself and Larissa just in time to thrust his shield in front of her and knock the boy away.
He punched the tip of his spear through Aeolus' forehead, lifting him into the air. The body spasmed once and went limp, dangling from the end of the blade, but then the mouth slowly opened wide in a terrible scream, a roar that rocked the Wood and filled Marcus' head, growing louder and louder until it drowned out any of his senses, and he collapsed. When Marcus awoke, he was surrounded by the bodies of his men and of the people of the Wood. The Lady Larissa cowered under a tree, sobbing. His head was pounding, and he couldn't think straight - it was as if he was continuously distracted by voices, though there was no one speaking.
He retrieved his weapon and his shield, grabbed his charge by her arm, and stumbled back towards the entrance to the Wood.
The guards at the lookout watched in stunned silence as the two survivors plodded up the switchback and through the gate.

The Dyad

Marcus was honored for his bravery in rescusing the Lady Larissa, and was granted leave. The death of his men weighed heavily on his mind and he shrouded himself in isolation. It wasn't long before he heard the voice.
The initial shock of the joining was more than Aeolus expected - it had been eons since he had died with no heir and had to inhabit a vessel that was not prepared. Marcus' spirit fought him, and while his other joinings had been symbiotic between them, this joining was parasitic in nature. It had taken a while to be able to form some semblence of his Self.
For days they were in agony, battling for dominance. Finally, a balance was reached. Marcus was still Marcus. But Aeolus was there, too. Not in control, but conscious. Marcus learned how he had inherited the Spirit Eld. He learned that likely Aeolus would eventually take over his mind, and he would be lost. But Aeolus learned about life outside of the Black Wood, and he learned of Marcus. He experienced Marcus' sense of duty and honor, and he realized that he had been existing for eons but he had not been living. He learned what it was like to have to fight for every thought, and it was exhausting. And he was old.
Aeolus came to believe that his everlasting life was really a curse, and that it was time to break it. They decide, together, that they must find a way to end the curse before Marcus is lost.
The power of Spirit that Marcus possesses mainfests in three distinct ways. Firstly, Marcus is tied to the spirits of his unit that were slain in the Black Wood when he recieved his power. For a short time, he can summon ghostly warriors to fight alongside him. Secondly, when a spirit that is of sufficient strength is weakened, Aeolus can absorb the energy of the spirit. Finally, as a surprise to both Marcus and Aeolus, the Eld allows Marcus to tap into the ley lines, providing them with a mechanism of travelling. While working with the Guild of Navigators is a very lucrative career choice, Marcus is intent on finding a way of breaking the curse before he loses his mind, and therefore is not interested in riches.

Plot hooks
  • Aeolus wants to learn how to break the curse
  • Marcus wants to learn how to get rid of Aeolus before it overwhelms him
  • Marcus wants to learn how to summon the spirits of the rest of his squad, he feels that once he can do that he can free them
  • Marcus wants to avenge his men

Equipment

Marcus wears an officer's suit of heavy armor. He wields a large shield and a spear, and has a short sword on his belt as a backup weapon.

Abilities

Flavor Abilities
  • Obscure Knowledge - Sometimes the ancient spirit within him allows him to know things he has never directly experienced
  • Whispers - He sometimes hears incoherent whispers when around the newly dead or areas where death has been busy. Some times others can hear them trying to speak to him as well, which can be disconcerting.
  • Commune with Spirits - Sometimes the spirits inhabiting places or objects may "speak" to Marcus, giving additional information or context.

Scene Abilities
  • Ley Line Travel - Marcus can navigate the ley lines, allowing him to escort a small group.
  • Summon Soldiers - Marcus can summon the spirits of his men to fight alongside him for a short time.
  • Speak with dead - Aeolus can cause a dead body to reanimate for the purpose of communicating. It can answer questions with the information it had in life, but otherwise is unaffected.

Adventure Ability
  • Absorb spirit - When a powerful enough spirit is weakened, it can be absorbed, destroying it in the physical world but giving the character the power to summon more soldiers
  • Envelope - A phalanx of ghostly soldiers are summoned who envelope an area and create an impenetrable shield wall. The soldiers can envelope the enemy, preventing them from leaving or attacking through the wall, or envelope allies, protecting them from outside attacks.

Skills
  • Leadership/Command – Both Marcus and Aeolus were leaders of men
  • Battlefield awareness/control – Marcus has a keen awareness of his surroundings, even in the midst of battle. He knows how to move his men around the field to protect their flanks and funnel the enemy
  • Endurance – Marcus never seems to tire, even after a full day’s march in armor.

Extras:
  • Jupiter – Utility, warhorse. Jupiter has been with Marcus for years, and has become accustomed to the ghostly apparitions that sometimes accompany him.

I'm keeping a tab on this one. So far it's a rare masterpiece, one with a genuine prospect of being a universe.
I'm enjoying both the IC and OOC and sincerely wish the writers remain faithful and do justice to it.
Keep it up fellas.
:)

I think Tot is the bumpkin of the group lol. He wasn't raised with privilege.

3 Choices

Okay as the first scene is wrapping up, the group will need to decide which of these 4 options they want to take:

(1) Aegar suggested you asking the Viscountess Larissa Oolong, who your newest member saved from death in the Blackwood.

(2) Or you could go to Count Balatros Vos.

(3) Or you could go direct to the guilders whose children are missing and ask them what's going on.

(4) Or whatever else you want to do. Just so long as y'all stick together.

It's a fairly free form approach I'm taking. I don't plan to railroad people, but if posting starts to slow down and it seems like people don't know what they want to do, I'll just move the story along by picking an option.

I think Tot would choose option 1 because he wouldn't want to hint to anyone that they're looking for the children because he doesn't trust the court, but he would trust someone that one of them saved. Because she would owe that person her life and thus a favor. :)

Marcus is not very adept at court intrigue and such, he is more upfront and head on and has no mind for politics. He would definitely be open to introducing the group to the Countess and to ask for her help, but someone who is more court-savvy might have to step in.

He would assume that some amount of current investigation was already done and that instead of starting from scratch if we could get brought up to speed (by the spymaster?) and then proceed to the Countess then we could pick up the investigation before the trail gets any colder. He would (naively?) trust that the investigators had done a proper job and therefore wouldn't consider that asking the same questions of the same people would grant much more knowledge.

I think they already had people attempt to investigate the Missing Boys situation and they all died before they could even start the investigation. So there is someone who doesn't want people investigating the disappearances.

Vanora seems to have an Etiquette skill so if you needed someone to speak Pom speech, there you go lol. Kosta seems to speak it well too.

This also brings to light more interesting drama because Tot personally would want to go talk to the Count Balatros but more about if he knows about The Reaper gang. But then again, he doesn't trust nobles. It would possibly be a death wish to do so. Then again, he wouldn't be against gutting the guy if it ever came down to it (he had ties with the gang) but definitely not in the middle of a well-guarded castle.

Alright, I think I have what I need to get us going. I'll get a post up as soon as possible.

Quick question before I put my post up guys. Is Viscountess Larissa Oolong supposed to be marrying Count Balatros Vos?

I just want to make sure that I have everything straight before I put something up in the IC thread, lol.

Important Figures

I'm trying to keep the information up to date and slightly advanced in the relevant areas.

http://forum.literotica.com/showpost.php?p=76348844&postcount=3

Important Figures
  • Iron Baron, Epic - The Iron Baron is the leader of the 5 Cities. He is a giant asshole who is powerful enough to keep the many Elites in the Nord in check. He has a giant sword called Oathbreaker that can cut an Elite in half, if they've broken an oath.
  • Grandmaster Jerico, Elite - First Sword for the First House of mercenaries or adventuring group permitted by the Iron Baron. He is a bad ass with his twin rapiers.
  • Grandmaster Sythe, Elite - Not much is known about the leader of the Second House of mercenaries, other than it is very sneaky and hard to pin down. Sythe uses ranged blade weapons for the most part.
  • Count Balatros Vos, Elite - Lord of the city and lands of the Vos plateau. He is young and brash, having just inherited the lands and title when his father died from Syphilus induced madness (throwing himself off the plateau screaming about the little ones chasing him).
  • Viscount Alexi Oolong and Viscountess Larissa Oolong, Extras - Married not too long ago, Alexi is in his 40s while Larissa is in her late 20s. It was an arranged marriage between the Oolong family (e.g. Alexi) and the Bergamont family (e.g. Larissa), a Viscount to Count Cedric Rhist the III. Alexi is noted for his quick temper, love of food, and good luck. Larissa is known for being impulsive, a naturalist, and bleeding heart; although rumor has it she suffers terrible nightmares. Alexi has 1 young child from his previous marriage, a young boy Amos. Larissa is viewed by most as a trophy wife, baring the loss of Alexi's boy.

I just want to make sure that I have everything straight before I put something up in the IC thread, lol.

I re-organized everything so the stuff that is changing often is easy to find and at the top.

So guys, what is the reasoning behind visiting Larissa? Is it just because Marcus know her and she happens to live in Vos now... or am I missing something?

Posted in the IC. Hope it's what we needed to hopefully get things movving.

~LD

Uh oh, if they're going to Vos, then they'll be in Reaper territory.
