The Grand Jury proceedings were flawed, it left out exculpatory evidence. The indictment was as thin as an indictment could be, The trial should never have taken place. The US accounts for 2/3 of NATO defense spending, currently 3.2% of its GDP and projected to be 3.4% of GDP this year. This is in contrast to NATO allies that collectively have been spending 2% (some even less, like freeloading Canada and some more).

President Trump sternly chastised NATO allies and called upon them to pay their fair share in his first term, offending many of them as well as US media outlets. He resumed his forceful calls for NATO allies to step up their defense spending in his second term and they are answering his call. They have pledged to spend 3% of GDP directly on defense and the Secretary General rightfully credits President Trump. You are correct that the other 1.5% is not directly on defense.

The US is not abdicating its leadership role. Delegating areas of responsibilities and sharing the cost of those responsibilities equally is only fair for US taxpayers. NATO even admits to not paying their fair share. Western Europe has a 1 &1/2 time larger GDP than the US, funding doesn’t match up. Trump demanded a fair and equitable distribution of funding resources to make it fair for US taxpayers. AMERICA FIRST! something you wouldn’t know anything about.
