Gardening: Plants, Flowers, Veggies, Trees and All Things Green

Mine are gone now. I just planted coneflower that I got for $5 clearance. They are multiple colors and they are beautiful. Also a friend gave me baby sunflowers on Fourth of July and I’m just getting around to planting them. Hopefully they make it 🤞🏻

How are we doing, gang? It's the height of summer and usually hot and dry, but we've had plenty of storms, which pleases the snails 🐌 🐌

Worker drones don't get Sunday off, they've put in an amazing shift on the globe thistles today, I've loved watching them go to work like..

No rest for the wicked.
I hope you're all well, and you can get out and breathe ❤️

Echinops! I love them. My wife introduced them into our wildflower gardens a few years ago and they took off. One of my favorites.

Thanks you for sharing!!

We took a page from your playbook and bought a few white coneflower, a red one too.

And two coreopsis.

All pretty significantly discounted. This is a good time of year to get perennials!

Just asked my wife. She’s a master gardener… she’s not sure, but gonna ask around.
Thank you! The whole stem always grows crooked. I’ll have to take a better picture tomorrow. One side is perfectly straight and the other is crooked.

I always thought these were called Allium. How do you get such clear pictures?

This is one fine thread. I'll contribute. I banish the house plants to the out of doors in summer. The Fica in the foreground is from about 1992. I rescued it from freezing rain after my father tossed it out by the wood pile. Returned it 2 years later in the same ugly pot but in perfect health. A house warming gift after the retirement dream was built. The norfolk pines are 1998 or so. The mings are all from the parent also from the late 90's. The heated birdbath is obsured by an umbrella. About to storm here. The bar along the back of the deck is pretty much all the dirt I get to grow in. Some spices did well this year but the first of spring and summer clouded by smoke I have very few flowers and almost zero tomatoes.
When imgur limited its photo type I switched to imgbb dot com. Same thing without the limits.

I think it's all luck! And it was a clear, still day and i had some time to poke my phone until it focused right 😉❤️
But thank you!

aaand yeah they do look a little like allium! They're easy to grow though, very drought tolerant and the bees love 'em. 10 outta 10.

Nice deck and backyard. Plants looking great. I've never had luck with Norfolk pines. Move them and they die on me most times.

Getting concerned about the pine. I've been her in this home 11 years. The little bit of sun in the front bay window no longer seems enough to sustain all winter. All 5 of the six remaining in the pot still have their main growth tip. But it really drops some big branches all winter the last two.
This pot is not the best. The plastic one big enough is larger which I do not want. It has a high builtin pan and air pockets and dirt at the bottom. 50$ is out of reach. I keep looking in case that will actually fix the problem. for now when inside I just water with 2/3 of what I did before once per week 3 or 4 times a week. It was making a difference last winter. kind of debunking the light theory where only internal non-window facing branches browned and fell off.
the lush beyond the deck is county property. I cut most of the bradford pairs, but cannot get ahead of poison ivy, unknown ivy and english ivy. You can't really see it but the Ash is bigger than the town home. It seems very sparse this year and has new dead branches on it. I hope it does not have a bug or disease. I hear something is happening to Ash in PA. The gumballs are healthy. I snuck in 2 fig trees a few maples and moved others I am not sure what they are. I am trying to fill space where a wind went through and cut a path through. I like raccoons, owl deer, a bear one time. I am less than30 miles form the white house. Amazing there is wildlife here. In the opposite direction I can walk to Manassas National Battlefield. Soon they will probably parcel that off and sell it. For now it is a huge preserve. Larger than Valley Forge. Before they change its name I hope they change the name of all the Confederate States, Richmond its capitol and many more. They keep spending millions of dollars changing the name of highways here. When they do they find a reason to cut down more trees. Which are the ones missing that have eliminated me hearing the owl each fall. Will be listening for him soon. Not hopeful.

Woohoo, you’ll have to show us
1. Red coneflower. Got it at a local garden shop on discount..
2. Red thread coreopsis. I think my wife got this at Lowe’s.
3. White or ivory coneflower. Got this at our local garden shop. This bed was a massive daylilies, but they hardly grew this year, so my wife thinned them out and planted some coneflower there.
4. Yellow cone flower, flanked by these lemon marigolds that I’ve never seen before. Local garden store.

For some reason, my Twitter is not automatically show me the pictures and you have to click on the link now. 🙁

Look for little holes in the ash near the base. Bores will do a number on trees. Owls are out here, I miss the whiperwils down here.

Plants are looking pretty good. I love how coreopsis spreads out and covers areas.

They are also deer resistant!!! They attract butterflies too and all kindsa pollinators. They’re great wildflowers.

I am not trying to be a downer, but I do not have one live ash tree on our farm or at our house. It’s a major nuisance in NJ.

It’s my favorite plant. It has a long flowering season. While they are perennials I have not had much luck w them over time and they seem to crap out after 3 years or so.

I hit a boatload of seed and keep on starting more. Maybe it’s our soil.

Not as many here either. They're paying people to cut bradford pears down. Pine and gumball/ sweet gum here in plenty. Trying to clear a half acre spot for an orchard for daughter. She's wanting apple, pear, plum, peach trees.

The bores? In PA NW Philly I heard they are getting some disease. Will have a look later at the base. I have way less birds this year. No Blue JAys and the Nut Hatch is a no show. Chicadee and titmouse for a while but none of those now either. Haven't seen the Brown Creepers since June.
