Gardening: Plants, Flowers, Veggies, Trees and All Things Green

The bores? In PA NW Philly I heard they are getting some disease. Will have a look later at the base. I have way less birds this year. No Blue JAys and the Nut Hatch is a no show. Chicadee and titmouse for a while but none of those now either. Haven't seen the Brown Creepers since June.
The good news is that the dead ash trees are great for birds. The dead snags are good for birds of prey to give them unobstructed views, I also see tons of woodpecker and yellow bellied sap suckers on them digging for insects.

Lots of good views of red tailed hawks and Cooper’s hawks in them.

But the dead trees can also be deadly or a nuisance and expensive to take down.

We also sell firewood, so an endless supply of dried wood.

I prefer the tree. It provides most of the shade I get. When the birds were here sitting at second floor level on that deck many hours have been whiled watching the birds feat. Winter and summer it is a point for a family of red tail hawk. Every year a pair would show up. The one they came with a juvenile. Over time only one would show. This year and last I assume he would circle and scream. Finally there were two. In winter, like when it would snow here around the Capitol, there is one the size of a basketball or better that perches in there. The Downey woodpeckers were here for a while in spring. They are usually here year round. No Flickers this year. Most years I will see a Pileated WP. But not so far this year. They come close for the suet. Bigger than the feeder I have it mounted to it is quite a show. i have not seen starlings for a few weeks so the feeder and suet will be restocked soon. Was taking a break they dump more than they eat and attract squirrels.
If the Ash dies it is on county property so no cost unless the HOA has to clean up what falls. Which I would let it lay as long as it didn't damage the fence. That property separates subdivisions. The other one is not as nice as this one. If I burn something it is charcoal or wood for smoke. Some gas. I cook outside year round on a 1996 model gas grill, weber 22" under the deck and on that marble slab I have a 14" 18" weber and a foot round kamado smoker. Great for smoking cheese or one for me things like cornish hens come out good. Weighs a ton.
To control the no seeums and to my liking mosquitos for the most part I use Pyrethrin Dust Diatomaceous Earth also a white powder along the house and end of deck. I keep it dry near the house and put a roof under the deck so that space is all dry as well. Stumbled on that at an ACE Hardware one day. Wish I found it sooner. It works incredibly well and lasts all summer. Out front if it stays dry a week or so it get rid of the tiny red ants that show up in spring. They try to make a home in the Japanese Cherry tree in the front yard.
Sounds like you are more rural. One day I will get there.

Those birds are all over down here. Brown creeper I'm not sure of that one. Have a brown thrasher that makes a bunch of noise.

Hate no see ums. Miss the Yoshino and Kwanzaa cherry trees. Moved and didn't get and saplings to start at new house. Not as many wood peckers here this year. Seen and heard only a small handful.

It may be some kind of specialized wren.

Looks like this only mine are darker brown. I don't call it a wren as it moves like a nuthatch or chickadee. Similar to the rook on a chess board. Vertical or horizontal/ sideways or up down. To move diagonal they turn and move sideways or up on their own axis. So does this little guy. They nest on the roof I built under the deck. Usually 3 babies each year. Haven't seen the parents since spring.

Very pretty bird. Looks similar to our wren, but lighter and less white on it. Still a very pretty bird.

I think it's all luck! And it was a clear, still day and i had some time to poke my phone until it focused right 😉❤️
But thank you!

aaand yeah they do look a little like allium! They're easy to grow though, very drought tolerant and the bees love 'em. 10 outta 10.
I mean what do you used to share your photos? I’ve been using Pinterest but my pics are blurry.

Anything that brings the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are desirable.

1. Red coneflower. Got it at a local garden shop on discount..
2. Red thread coreopsis. I think my wife got this at Lowe’s.
3. White or ivory coneflower. Got this at our local garden shop. This bed was a massive daylilies, but they hardly grew this year, so my wife thinned them out and planted some coneflower there.
4. Yellow cone flower, flanked by these lemon marigolds that I’ve never seen before. Local garden store.

For some reason, my Twitter is not automatically show me the pictures and you have to click on the link now. 🙁

The first pic they are so vibrant. I love the mix on the last pic.

The cone flower has been abundant this year. I’ve never seen so many echinacea this year.

The viburnum at our farm are spectacular right now. Bright red berries.

For whatever reason, my Twitter links are not opening anymore so you have to click on the link.

Huh. That Musk guy is smart. I wonder how much the 'x' domain costs. Google has a few results. bing says they would like to have a description but do not own rights. The link takes you to twitter. Even you w67 are promoting the site. One can only see the post. If you want to see what else you said you have to join. What is twitter? I didn't get it and don't feel like finding my password to log in.

I've thought about the chives, just never done them. The other flowers I love, especially in mass or thick borders around beds.

The deer are very bad here and they don’t like any kind of onion.

They take over but in a good way.

Deer keep my daisies cut low for me. 2 bucks were at it yesterday when I went to work.

Today is the entry day for the county 4H fair. My wife and I entered a number of things.

Veggies: best pumpkin, white, pumpkin category, large gourd category, best beets, largest beet (I entered that one separately under the pseudonym Dwight Schrute), weirdest vegetable category (entered a bunch of mutant, growing together, red potatoes), longest cucumber.

Flowers: Ageratum, Cosmo, dahlia, marigold, wildflower mix, garden flower mix, nicest, Sunflower, largest Sunflower, tallest sunflower,
Maybe one or two others.

We also entered the tallest sorghum grain category.

It’s always fun!!

We did pretty well, Altho it’s all good clean fun.

Fruit and veggies
Our white and orange pumpkins each took second place.
Our large gourd took first place.

Flowers
Our phlox took first place as well.
Ageratum took second place.

Farm crops
Our sorghum took first place. We are almost always the only people who enter it! 😂😂😂

I think you can forward thru the pics without having to open instagram.

Woohoo, congrat!

This is a very sad time of year for me. Dying flowers. It’s the saddest thing. Everything looks dried up and haggard. Everyone says, ‘oh look at the beautiful colors on the trees beginning’. Leaves on trees about to be dead 😞
