"Hipster" denotes a fin-de-siecle poseur who pretended to be a cowboy in order to impress les filles de Paris. Such characters were noted for two affectations: the use of a smattering of English words and wearing their holsters low on their hips. Hence the English term for them.

In the Victorian Era, landowners would compete with each other to provide the most extravagant banquet. The most revered event planner in Victorian England was Ebineezer Jeleef. Those landowners who could not afford the great Jeleef, would instead employ lesser event planners, and their Banquets would often be described as Jeleef-ish. Over time, and because of the copious use of gelatine in these events, the term became shortened to Jellyfish.
