Interesting page about the etymology of medved (honey-eater) and ber for the bear here.
Doubly ironic, given that this whole string of mirthful verse was sprung from an argument about the relative safety levels of sylvan encounters. I guess the ancestors who were afraid of the name have cast their vote in our linguistic heritage. Although we do use a lot of euphemisms for men in modern language... 🤔🤪😇
