Halloween Contest Support Thread

My last-minute entry has even fewer reads than yours, Jennie. Given the volume of contest entries this time around, I'm not surprised. Readers usually go for authors they've seen before, first. Being a virgin counts against you, yet still, you have a good number of reads. Must be doing something right. ;)

Thanks SW. There are a lot of entries! I don't know how I am going to get through even a quarter of them.

Don't worry; it's appreciated, but not expected, to read other authors' stories. I try to get to as many as I can, but like everyone else, I'm limited on time. No one's going to hate you for not reading their story this time around.

That's why we generally put out a call for those needing votes to qualify - they get read and voted on first.

Slyc and Starrkas, i have read, voted and commented, well done. Starrkas, that comment from the imbecile in USA just makes me shake my head - non-erotic, d'oh.

I got a giggle outa that one - in fact that was the one that was duplicated. I figure one spray per troll is enough, so deleted the second one.

Are there only troll voters lefts? Chapter 5 of The Descent went out yesterday to an initial score of 2.23 (7 votes). It's now up to a rousing 2.59 with 17 votes.

The other chapters have done pretty well. Chapter 4 got some wonerful PC's which was convinced me to put out Chapter 5 after all.

Anyway, if you've been following this series, take a look at the last installment.

QUOTE DGHeat  Today's sweep took another 128 votes and lowered my score by two points. Where's the logic here? I don't expect to ever win a contest but I would like a little fairness. Who are all these people who vote for my stories? Why are their votes not counted (both good and bad). I have very few friends on Lit, no one knows me or where I live. I have no alts, just DG Heat. To lose 178 votes in two days doesn't make sense. Why didn't I lose them all on the first sweep if they were bad? So what gives?

I read the end of the HALLOWEEN Contest thread toady (I’ve tried to ignore the contest until all the entries were in) and of course couldn’t miss the above quote.

I had to laugh to see all the vote begging and complaints about trolling that always seem to dominate the thread, the endless ha ha last place jokes, but I gotta tell you, my scourian  heart goes out to the confused man with the funny thread. This wonderful writer has asked the same question the last three contests. The QUEEN :cattail: never answers. His AH colleagues never address his questions because doing so would open a whole can of worms that would bring into question every story that has ever won.

Reading his complaint brings large, salty scourian tears to my eyes. I know exactly how he feels!!!!

I believe that I’m perhaps the only LITEROTICAN who understands his anguish. For some reason he and I lose huge amount of votes in every contest (which is why I passed on this one).

I’ve asked myself (and the great LAUREL :cattail: herself many times) exactly the same questions Mr Heat  is asking himself and his AH viewers. Why are their votes not counted? Why didn’t I lose them all on the first sweep? Where’s the fairness?

I wonder what it is that Mr Heat and I have in common – could it be we’re too popular with the LITEROTICA reading audience for the QUEENS :cattail: taste. But you know what, I’m afraid we’ll never know…

I’m james r scouries, and I approve this message…

Dolphins love having all their votes counted…

p.s. coming soon, james r scouries analyses this years halloween contest…

Is it my imagination or have there been more entries to this Halloween Contest than any previous one?

OK, there are multiple entries from some people, including me as Og and Jeanne, but the list of entries seems longer than ever.

The overall standard seems to be high as well.

What do you think? Of the number and standard?

Og

I'm actually amazed by the number of stories. For the most part they are also very good, much better than the last contest in fact. Whoever wins is going to be well deserving.

I'm still looking for reads and votes if anyone hasn't read mine yet. It would be greatly appreciated. I'm still trying to get through them, but it takes a long time.

I don't have nearly your longevity on the site, but in the short time I've been here and shorter time I've really been paying attention to the contests, it seems to be a larger number of authors than I recall. I plan on doing a lot of reading over the next few days (since I don't have to work), so I can't really comment on the standard.

But I consider it a good thing. It means the site is growing and the quality is improving -- which hopefully translates into more people coming and, perhaps, taking a look at some of my writing as well. Sure, my chances of winning go down, but I don't enter to win anyway

I won't quote scouries as most perople have him on ignore

but I changed my mind about answering him here on this thread.

This is the answer I posted on his thread and copied here:

The Support thread is there for just such reasons you mentioned. It's a place to bitch about things, especially trolls. Only one person bitched about losing large numbers of votes and he is a popular writer. Fans do strange things like voting many times to try and help an author win. Their votes get swept. Why discuss it. It's a fact of life.

As for Laurel answering you on this question, she won't. The policy of how this site is run by her and Manu is theirs and theirs alone. We get to use it but it's their way or the highway.

Everyone else understands this, so this constant bitching about the system is a waste of time. They will do it it their way and they don't worry about anyone else.

They are not going to change things for anyone but themselves. Get used to it or go write somewhere else. Those are the options.

Have a nice day.

Thanks Tx ;)

Almost. ;) There won't be as many entries because a lot of people will be doing Nano.

But you can use NaNoWriMo to write multiple entries for the Christmas contest - My 12 chapters of the Flawed Red Silk series were written for NaNoWriMo AND edited and posted on Lit before the end of the NaNo month.

I just had to make life difficult for myself.

I hadn't thought about that. Good idea.

Just thinking about last year. A lot of people skipped the contest, using Nano as their excuse.

I'm not commenting on all I read any more, or I'll never get through them all! And saying "good job" a hundred different ways is tedious ;)

Loganforester I read and voted on yours yesterday.

Hi. Um. I need votes.

Not many. I'm pretty close.

My entry isn't like a lot of my other stuff. But I still think it's lovable in its own way.

Thanks!
JD

Logan, I just read your story. I did it out of respect since you read and commented on mine. It was a great story. It kept my attention all the way through and was very well deserving of the 5 I gave it.

Very well done and I will be sure to read future stories (or chapters) by you. I honestly hope you do well in this contest. Your story is very deserving of it. I hope my comment here will get you more reads and votes and less trolls.
With respect

Thanks again.
