HBO: True Detective

Love the way he's just casually doing that while they are askig him questions. So many small touches that flesh out his character.

Fair enough, but why didn't you like it?

There is all this deep meaning from these books like The King in Yellow....

Thanks, Didn't even realise it was a book! Apparently H.P. Lovecraft referenced certain aspects from it.. Wiki pedia to the rescue :)

Any other references people have picked up?

Man, Woody killed it last night. Between his reaction to the video and the flashback to the microwave scene, you get the feeling that this is a man who has had about enough. It's like for the first time, he's totally on-board with Rust. Neither one really has much to lose at this point, so it's time to dispense some justice.

I still think there's a massive gut-punch coming.

I also think the King in Yellow and Carcosa are just trappings that have been adopted by the crazy-ass rape/murder cult that has been abducting the kids. It creates a sense of dread over the entire case, but I don't think there's anything supernatural going on.

I do love anything with a Lovecraftian feel, though, and this definitely has that.

Ah I definitely don't think anything supernatural is going on. Love how it manages to mix the eerie atmosphere with the serious character development.

Do think that the believe in some of the mythology in the ramblings though.

I don't think there is any super natural things going on here, its just they are combining genres.

Hey, was that boat in the last scene the boat they were on with the Sheriff? or was that some sort of forshadowing? Finally the conclusion....Good thing for HBO that Mcconaughey won the Oscar....good ratings I'm sure

Keen eye there! Hmm doesn't look like it though, not sure. The sheriff's boat seemed like a pleasure one.

To be honest though, with the level of writing/acting talent on display and the way the show is shot, I would have hoped people would watch anyway. But anyway that more people see this series is a good thing in my book :)

The guy on the lawnmower was also cutting the grass earlier, at that building. Between murdering kids, I guess he's a landscaper

Yeah I thought he was odd the first time I saw him, but only caught onto the scarred face when they did the close up.

Plus you can't have untidy lawn when you're murdering people.. that would just be uncivilized :)

I got into this show two episodes ago. I went back and watched everything I've missed up to the newest show that aired last night. It's been fanfuckingtastic, thus far. I agree that the boat they were on appeared to be a fishing boat vs. a ferry. I didn't put that together until I read it here.

I guess the one question that I have; when the ex-wife visited Marty, he asked if she had told the cops about the fight. She said that she had not; however I remember her telling them about the fight. Had she lied to the cops? Or, had she lied to Marty? Or, perhaps both, and we still don't have the full story?

Hmm my memory is (edit) not great on all the details, but I think only told the cops that there was a disagreement, not sure what it was about. To Marty, he only knows that she fucked Rust. Rust is the only one who has the full story on it.

To be honest I'm not sure if Marty, over the years, has worked out that Rust was used by Maggie to break up the marriage or not.

She did tell the cops, but she played it down, I don't think she offered them much...I was surprised, a little, that she was worried about Cohle (Woody)....she still cares I guess, even though he cheats.

Okay, so essentially, while she was telling the shortened version to the cops; the crosscut actually gave the viewer an omniscient point of view of what actually took place. So as far as we know, we have full detail.

She still loves him. There is no doubt in my mind. She still protects him from the authorities, she'll put herself front and center with Rust in attempt to protect Marty any way that she can.

I think she's also protecting herself. She had to survive, and she knew that the kids and her would be damaged if they stayed with Marty. I think she does love him, but she is definite in her realization that he was bad for their family.

Maggie owed Rust for mowing her lawn.

With only 1 episode left, I'm trying to figure out if the disturbed behavior of Marty's daughter is just a red hearing or it some how plays into Marty being an abusive perv.

The grandfather could be responsible for her behavior.

Hmm I forgot about that.. I think there will be some kind of explanation for the daughters behaviour in the last episode. Not sure if she's been abused though.

It seems like Marty doesn't have much contact with his kids. Other than getting caught cheating what did he do for him to be estranged from his family?

I think it was the way it ended. Maggie knew she was powerless to leave him, and the only way to finish it was to manipulate him by fucking Rust.

Plus Maggie had done a lot to keep the family together, and Marty had a second chance... then slept with Beth. She gave up on him, and wanted a fresh start with the kids.

Plus remember the scene where the kids leave Marty and Maggie on the couch, with Maggie just having found out he'd been cheating once again? I think the kids saw what Marty was like too.
