How is all this Republican overreach going to play out in November 2014?

In epistemological terms, it is almost "dumb" for kids who have never set foot in a combat zone to discuss perceptions of the reality of this or that flick.

You know the military is really big and more people in it don't ever see combat than do, right? Yes, of course you know that. Implying anything else would just be stupid.

For all the hullabaloo about how tough basic training/boot camp is, 91% of all recruits make it through.

Also, 91% of all military never see combat.*

*does not apply to Lit, where of course everyone is an Airborne Ranger Special Forces Navy Seal UDT Force Recon Delta Force veteran.

Not me, I was Aviation Ordnance which is complicated for putting bombs on helicopters and jets. The closest I ever came to combat was being close enough to hear gun fire. . .or when Saddam was bombing the base and by bombing I mean over two weeks I heard four booms, never saw anything.

Yep, which is why civilians liking it is so funny....thus the beginning of the entire war flick hijacking.

Basic is pretty easy, fun actually, it's the schools after basic that have the higher drop out rates.

And as far as I know I'm the only one on the GB who has ever claimed to have even gone to any big boy schools or worked with/for any cool guy units.

The reason it's such a high percentage in boot is partly because people are told what to do before they go in, what to expect, how to act, etc. Another reason is that after a few days it's pretty easy to figure out how to get by. There's nothing you can do about the physical part except let your body adjust (and it will) but the rest of it is mind games. Easy enough to ignore and endure.
There are always non hackers but not like people think. The idea that so many wash out I think comes from the draft days when everyone went in, many didn't want to be there and many simply wouldn't cut out for it and couldn't do it. You don't get that so much with a volunteer force.
However I'm very much in favor of compulsory service like Israel has. I like their model.

In the past we'd get a several people in here always claiming to be Rangers or Recon and I think one guy even claimed Delta. Most you could tell never did more than watch Platoon a few times.

Yep. An entire generation of vets got used to not mentioning their service.

When Iran hostages got a welcome home, it dawned on America that it had never welcomed back its Viet vets.

"91% of the military has not seen combat"

Some people just do not get how many REMF's it takes to support actual combat troops.

If you where in since 1991 and in a 11 series I can not imagine how you have not seen combat.

People in from 73 to 91 (minus the few in Panama (82nd and 75th I think), or other brief engagements) have most likely not seen combat and drive up those number further.

Posers are everywhere and prior service can spot them from a mile away. I love calling them out for it in public too....Universities are extra full of posers.

And god do I revel in each opportunity to catch an ROTC cadet shit bagging it up....oh that's just good old fashioned fun.:D

91-01 combat was pretty sporadic and short lived. 173rd/82nd/101st/10th/75th/ODA saw it but not many outside of those units.

Lot of short timers doing 3 year stents for their GI bill's and a lot of mech/armor that never went anywhere. So yea most never see shit.

If you were in from 01-08 as an 11 it's a given you either went to Iraq or Afghanistan with an almost certain probability of contact as an 11/12/13/91 series...04-06 Iraq being the worst of it IMO.

173rd/82nd/101st/10th/75th/ODA are always the first to hit the meat grinder so if you're an 11 in any of those units for more than a few years odds are you will get a call and be wheels up in a matter of hours....anyone in those units even during "peace" time get their CIB's and mustard stains in operations most never hear about.

I also like the idea of compulsory service, I think we'd have far fewer wars if these "Kill 'em all, Let God sort em out" Congress folks had an idea of what the military can or cannot do. My favorite case in point was in the latter years of the failed Bush administration when Cheney wanted to re-purpose Navy and Airforce personnel as combat infantry troops to handle some North African uprising. Utter stupidity.

I am of the opinion that most conservatives suffer from Nugentitis, i.e. they love to talk about their love of country, but when asked to actually serve their country they shit their pants.

you fail to mention the 25th, even though they have been to it all....

Being both 82nd and 25th I can tell you despite all the "back at Bragg" idiots in the army, the 25th is superior in every way. IMO

There is a reason Storming Norm chose the 25th as his guard when he went in to Iraq to sign for peace.

Oh, I'm in agreement with you there. 11 series are front-line combat troops, and the poorly executed Iraq war allowed virtually all MOS categories to experience combat up close and personal (remember truck driver Jessica Lynch?). If only those ungrateful bastards in Iraq had strewn rose petals in our path like Cheney (or was it Wolfowitz?) said they would....

If I recall correctly, and my numbers may be out of date, only 15% or so of the Army is combat arms. Lots more combat support and combat service support as a percentage.

There was one contemporaneous welcome event for RVN vets, in San Mateo. The big welcome for Iran hostages catalyzed contemplation of the fact that Viet vets had gotten nothing.

When The Wall was dedicated in 82, no president dared show. Warner and Mathias were the only 2 politicos. Wasn't until 85 that NY staged a welcome.

So there were 2 phases -- the first where serving was decidedly uncool, and the second where it became sorta cool to have been there.

The typical number given is 8:1 support to combat.

Only in the sense that there were no triumphal ticker-tape parades.

Except mobility.....which is why I say the other Air mobile/super light legs hit the fan first. Conn-ex full of rucks, issue weapons...get on the bird....buh bye!!

Can't do that with most other units, as least they didn't while I was in.

There is a reason Storming Norm chose the 25th as his guard when he went in to Iraq to sign for peace.

Tropic thunder is boss...so is 1st cav and 3rd ID. But those divisions can't deploy world wide by the end of the day, they are simply too heavy.

Stryker & Bradley FV's...all kinds of gear.

I'm not saying they are bad...god knows nothing gives you an "AWWWW YEEEAAA BOY!!!!"
http://scm-l3.technorati.com/11/01/28/25771/flava-flav.jpg

feeling like having 1ID/25th/1st Cav/3rd/2nd or any of the dorito chips show up to have your back with some 25mm and a coax 240B....accept maybe an A10, whale farts are pretty gangster.

In that sense, and in others.

Most here are too young to have lived through the era.
