I’m so old I remember…

I remember going through the discount boxes of vinyl records at the Payless drugstore, with a hole punched in the corner, in search of last years hits for just $2.99

Gonga find? The Kinks - Schoolboys in Disgrace, a masterpiece theme album.

I remember getting either drinking glasses or kitchen towels in boxes of oatmeal.
And flatware when you filled your tank with gas. At .23 cents a gallon.
Ye I remember petrol ⛽️ in the UK 🇬🇧 under £1 a liter, also remember gallons 🤣🤣

I remember...

- walking home alone from elementary school every day
- Once home, knowing mom and dad were both at work, racing back out the door to find friends to play with
- Having my mom yell out the front door for me to come home for dinner
- Pretending I was just finishing my homework and asking if I could go out to play after dinner
- Putting on my football uniform on Sundays to watch the NFL with my dad
- Nana's Norwegian pancakes rolled up with melted butter and topped with syrup

ISOIR gigs where the band was loud onstage, not just the FOH PA system. When guitarists used 100W amps and shifted air, and nobody used in-ear headphones for monitors.

Music was better when it was loud. And fuck your hearing.

Amen. I’ve seen hundreds of punk rock bands. And will not be letting up soon.

What I do miss (and I’m so old I remember) when you didn’t need to buy tickets online for every fucking show. You could show up at the vfw hall or club for 5-10 bucks and see three bands.

CBGBs, Pyramid club, pipeline, TLA, City Gardens, etc…

Our first telephone line was called a party line. We shared it with other houses. Only o e person could talk on it. So if the other house was using the phone you could not receive or make calls.

The 70s/80s were the golden age for live music, when you could see the top bands in reasonable sized venues for sensible ticket prices. I really don't see the point of mega-arena shows (I guess it makes sense to the promoters but not the fans).

One of my most treasured memories is catching a BÖC warmup show at the Venue in London. Billed as Soft White Underbelly for the true fans, I got tickets easily and for next to nothing by today's standards, and got to see the original lineup at something like the peak of their powers (although they split almost immediately afterwards following a disastrous festival appearance).
