I am Music

So somebody linked a song on the BDSM boards, and I listened, and there was a sample on the track that kept playing that I couldn't quite recognise. It was like an aural itch that I could not scratch. I finally identified it as The Clash, and knew that it was off of "Combat Rock". It drove me even buggier to know that I knew this song, and this album, but still had to parse through the album to find the track and hear that 2 second sample before I went barking mad.

"Straight To Hell" by the only band that matters.

I don't know a lot of their catalog, but I always loved this one by them:

Rock The Casbah

I could probably talk your ears slam off about the Clash, and later Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros. This is probably obvious, as I've posted more than a few links to The Clash or Joe Strummer. I still like his version of "Redemption Song" better than Marley's, and I really dig Marley. "Johnny Appleseed", "Mondo Bongo", and "Comagirl", etc are all such great tunes by Joe, and so very, very much of what the Clash produced was incredibly worthy. Damned good stuff.

"If yer after gettin the honey, then you don't go killin all the bees."

And I guess the above post does reflect that I'm the sort of person that tries to identify samples when I think I recognise them.

i can relate. i'm the same way about earth, wind & fire and maurice white.
i tend to follow the work of writers/producers too, whether or not they're performers. this is one of the reasons i prefer my own copy of an album, even if somebody offers to copy it for me. liner notes are a dangerous thing in my hands. i can seriously o.d. on this stuff. i even love knowing trivial shit like who was doing the finger snaps in the background. no detail too small.

Heh, I've found all sorts of weird things in album notes. Good stuff. Admittedly, some artists I don't care enough to know that info.

Sitting here watching their videos makes me really really really want to get my trumpet out.

My lip is so gone :(

How long has it been since you played?

An Ode To The Lip:
If you like Herb Alpert, you MUST love Chuck Mangione. I know...flugel horn, but cousin instruments. I think he may have also played trumpet.

Feels So Good

Give It All You Got

Cannon Ball Run Theme

and ooh, remember this ? :D

I tried to find his song, "Floating", but it's not on the Tube. The selection on him there is limited. If you haven't heard it (doubtful) check it out. It's gorgeous.

*thinks* Crikey, twenty years, or thereabouts. I pulled my horn out a few years ago and blatted out some awful stuff. Lip's clean gone. Can't recall even how to read sheet music. I did manage a few (awful) tunes, as I got the notes by ear, sort of.

I love this song! I actually used to play along to a 45 of this. Never saw the sheet music to it, I'd just sit and listen to the platter spin and play with the notes til I got it. I learned this tune, "Rise", the Star Wars theme, and many others that way.

Something tells me that you would dig some of the vinyl I had/have.

That song sounds like it should be one I know, but I can't think of it right now.

I was noticing that his fingering was really tentative live. Weird. I'm running through a bunch of live vids, and noticing that. I wonder why...

I can't even tell you what that song was. It was the commercial itself that I was wondering if you remembered. Yeah, the commercial is probably older than me, or close, but I remember seeing it at some point. I'm a nostalgia junkie. I love the 70's :D. (Btw, that is the best thing VH1 ever spawned)

It's your inner trumpet begging to be let out. Let him come out and play. :(
I dunno, I don't play an instrument, but is it akin to riding a bike? You might be rusty, but given some time, it would probably come back to you.

Nope, don't recall the commercial.

It probably is my inner horn player talking. Maybe I will.

Secret Garden-Greenwaves
I remember a meadow one morning in May.
With a sky full of dreams that sailed in that day.
I was dancing through green waves of grass like the sea
For a moment in time I could feel I was free.

There are waves of forgiveness and waves of regret.
And the first waves of true love Ill never forget.
In the meadow that morning as I wandered alone
There were green waves of yearning for life
still unknown.

Take me home to the meadow that cradles my heart
Where the waves reach as far as you can se.
Take me home to the meadow weve been too long apart,
I can still hear you calling for me.

Take me home to the meadow that cradles my heart
Where the waves reach as far as you can se.
Take me home to the meadow weve been too long apart,
I can still hear you calling for me.

What Id give to remember that heavenly state
Just a moment in time all mine to create.
As Im taking my last breath I know what Ill see
Therell be green waves forever out there waiting for me.

Take me home to the meadow that cradles my heart
Where the waves reach as far as you can se.
Take me home to the meadow weve been too long apart,
I can still hear you calling for me.

Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time

Recognizing that Rolling Stone covers a limited range of music, and accepting that this is a subjective list, I found this interesting. I did a quick count, and realised that I owned, or had owned, ~120 of these albums. And had singles and such from probably around 300+ of them on various comp albums, greatest hit collections, etc. And there were another 30-40 that I thought that I had owend, but couldn't remember if I owned that album or another similar one by the same artist.

In the end, it reminded me of a lot of music that I want.
