I Have A Serious Question...

I Still Can't Believe...

That all the responsibility lies on the parents to shield their kids from porn sites...

If all the responsibilty of raising kids is on the parents then how about we repeal the legal drinking age...Hey its the parents responsibility to make sure their kids aren't drinking right?

Lets repeal the legal age to buy tobacco...A parent should be responsible enough to make sure their kids don't smoke or dip right?

Who needs a legal driving age anymore...Its the parents responsibilty to make sure their kids don't get behind a wheel and drive a car at age 13 right?

Screw the 18 or over law to watch XXX movies in a theater...Hey i'm a parent and if my 11 year old wants to watch some chick get gang banged then more power to em right?

Why do we need an 18 year old gambling law...I'm a responsible parent so I know my child wouldn't dare enter a casino at age 14 and try to play blackjack right?

Case closed...

In all of these examples, someone is selling something to children--even in the case of gambling, which is buying a chance to test your luck and/or skill. When someone sells a product, there are a host of legitimate interventions--regulating conduct, safety, taxation, and availability, and to some extent, content.

However, when someone posts, speaks, or distributes non-commercial material, it falls under a different category of commerce. In this case, it's more about intellectual property rights, and First Amendment rights. The very reason for a place like Literotica is to allow people to write, publish, and exchange ideas, images, and fantasies without the interventions and commercial conformity of other venues.

If I try to sell your child something that the community has decided isn't appropriate for children, there's cause and a legal mechanism for governmental involvement and legal action.

If, however, I speak my mind--forewarning anyone who might read it that the contents aren't meant for children, and should be screened by adults--I have every right to do so without being censored on anyone's behalf. Again, the world is full of things you might not want your kids to see, so be an active parent.

People expect to park their children in front of a TV show, a computer game or ISP, a movie, a book, anything that will keep them from having to interact with their child. And, rather than pre-screen the content, they want to force the entire world to only circulate the ideas and content that they approve of. They do this because they don't want to make the effort to pre-screen material and actively monitor their children, and/or they do it because they believe they have the moral, ethical, and legal right to mandate the values of others. They often forget that those other people they find so offensive and dangerous have their own rights and are under no obligation to be a role model for your child. In fact, they have no obligation to your child at all--except to not inflict violence upon them or sell them anything forbidden by the community's laws.

Get used to the idea that other people don't necessarily share your values, or your certainty that your morality is the right one. That's what it means to live in a free society--accepting the rights of even the people you find appalling, immoral, or even arrogant and narrow-minded.

That's why I responded to this thread in the first place.

Ummm...

What is someone selling your 13 year old if he/she drives your car...

What is someone selling your 11 year old who gets cigarettes from someone who is 21...

What is someone selling your 12 year old if an 18 year old gives them beer at a party...

What is someone selling your 15 year old if he/she goes to a friends house and the friends dad has a XXX rated movie that they watch all the time without you knowing...

You bought the car, you're responsible for who uses it. The driving age works to make sure that children don't drive because they could kill someone. Essentially, allowing a child to drive your car could allow them to turn it into a deadly weapon. The government intervenes in an effort to protect the immediate physical safety of everyone.

If a child goes to another's house and comes into contact with something you don't like (booze, porn, whatever), you should have been in better communication with the person in whose care you've left your child--and you should adjust your decisions accordingly. Don't let your child go over there to play anymore! If you are paying for that babysitting or childcare service, you are already protected from these things by law.

It is not just illegal to sell tobacco or liquor to a minor, it's illegal to knowingly sell to anyone who you KNOW is passing it to a minor. (So, if there's a teenager standing in front of the liquor store, and you walk outside and hand them the beer you just bought, both the adult, and the store, are legally liable.) If an 18 year old passes another child liquor, the parents are responsible for not monitoring the environment of their children (letting them go to, or hosting, the party), as is the person who bought the alcohol for a child--unless it's the parent.

The age-restriction "vice" laws (on tobacco, liquor, porn, guns, etc.) are independently overruled all the time by parents. Some let their 15 year old have a glass of wine at dinner. Some take their teens hunting, even though the child's not old enough to buy a gun. There are LOTS of examples wherein the laws are designed to set an age at which everyone is deemed responsible for their own decisions. Before that age, the laws intervene in order to allow parents to decide for their child, or decide to allow the child to decide for themselves. That is the parent's role, it's the entire point of defining someone as your "dependent." You are accountable for them--they depend upon you, and are under your protection.

You can intervene in what they're exposed to as much as you want, on an individual level. But, you don't have the right to demand that everyone else do it for you. The things that a majority of people find inappropriate for children are age-restricted or available for parental pre-screening already. So, do it and stop looking for everyone else to raise your kids for you and think exactly like you do.

Actually I absoutly agree!
France doesn't have a legal drinking age at all. They have a much smaller problem with alcholism than in America. If parents taught there children how to drink responsiblly they wouldn't feel the need to go out and drink to excess and kill themselves because of binge drinking. They wouldn't feel the need to sneak around same with tobacco. Although if we would just stop advertising to little kids then we wouldn't need to worry about them buying (or buying off people who are 21 it is still buying, or stealing if that's what it is.)
Why do we have gambling anyway so people like you can bet that you'll never have sex.
Driving, why shouldn't someone who is able to drive be able to drive. Anyone who can pass the test can drive. Just make the test more difficult. (please) And retest people once in a while and I have no problem. I'd rather have my responsible, smart, decent driver who is 13 year old neighbor drive his father home from the bar than have his falling over drunk father drive home, how about you?
And I think we've adressed the Porn already. (See the barbie comment.)

Seems to me that kidrock is either a child getting his thrills from being on here and thinking he's winning an argument...I didn't see anyone fighting anyhow...just others trying to explain stuff to him...and the onion bun talk :) sesame is my favorite anyday...or an adult who wouldn't want the responsibility of raising a child if he had one...it's a parents place to bring up their children to be decent and responsible adults...there are always going to be those times when kids want to do things their parents won't let them...and they'll find away to do what they want...but if you've been a good parent that kid when know when they've gone too far...and if there are kids on literotica so what??? everything I've seen here is pretty harmless stuff...I'd rather mine be sneaking around the house and logging onto literotica than out somewhere unknown and smoking pot or shooting up or drinking and driving...or countless other things...there are laws to help us bring up decent adults...
