As for Islam bring a violent religion, it isn't really. If you have a brain and a knowledge of history, go back 1400+ years ago and look at how things were. Romans were fighting, Persians were fighting. Two big superpowers. China had been in a huge civil war (a lot of violence) then there were Arabs who were quiet. Have you read that bloody book or horrors known as the Koran? Virtually every sura involves fighting or suppressing the unbeliever. The Koran consistently exhorts Moslems to fight and subdue the infidel. Where to start? There are books written on this very subject, but I'll just cite a little of Moslem scripture for now. Try the open-ended command in Sura 9:5 (all translations are Sahih International):

"And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. ... "

Now try sura 9:123 on for size:

"O you who have believed, fight those adjacent to you of the disbelievers and let them find in you harshness. And know that Allah is with the righteous."

Sura 9:29 makes clear the fate of people like my family and myself:

"Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled."

So as a non-Moslem, I can be "tolerated" if I pay a special tax and am humbled while doing so (other translations say, "pay the jizya with willing submission.)" You call this a prescription for non-violence?
